I think what makes the Manor so horrifying isn't totally due to Vanessa and the atmosphere, but the way it contrasts so starkly with the rest of the game. If it were its own game, I doubt it would have the same effect, but the fact that smack in the middle of "cartoony action platformer" is "invincible jumpscare monster lady" is what gives it so much power to frighten.

I think it also helps circle things back around on the tone and story. The fact that the Snatcher is the product of such a terrible woman’s decisions helps hammer home WHY Hat Kid befriending all the jerks, losers, and creatures across the planet is cute and wholesome. Mustache Kid saw all these people and, rightly, noticed all the messed up stuff they constantly get up to. Hat Kid was a lot kinder, though, and forced those people to play nice with her. Hat Kid made everyone’s lives a little bit nicer regardless of how mean or scary the people were. But Vanessa isn’t a person doing some messed up things or being mean. She’s cruel, she can’t be reasoned with, she can’t be redirected or guided towards a less destructive path. She didn’t put Snatcher in her basement and kill him because there was a sophisticated plan or petty grievance she wanted to settle. Vanessa is unwell, and no relationship can fix the kind of mental illness she’s consumed by. Surviving the brief time where Hat Kid’s path crosses Vanessa’s is a reminder that “bad people” like Snatcher usually have a story to consider. Sadistic, soul-snatching demon or not, Snatcher’s life and afterlife are dominated by the circumstances that led to his death, and he deserves a friend after everything he’s been through. We see (or can assume) something similar to be the case for all the other people Hat Kid collects along the way - everyone has their own Vanessa haunting their past, and everyone deserves a friendly pal to set them straight and give them unconditional support. The game uses Vanessa to double down on what makes the story cute and wholesome. It’s great!

And to add onto this: Subcon Forest (where the level takes place) is generally pretty spooky, but it’s more the fun kind of spooky, like Halloween! Vanessa’s manor on the other hand is like an actual mini horror game, hiding from the monster Alien Isolation style. And that contrast with the world, and the game as a whole is a big part of why the level is so fucking terrifying. And of course, there’s the implications (such as the notes and diary entries in the manor) that she’s a domestic abuser.

I can't help feeling my message was misconstrued... It is a shame we don't try to deal with the root of the problem of pedophilia as such, because then we may be to remedy a lot of pedophiles out of existence. Short story time: I played this game with my little sister. She watched me as I played and had to translate all dialouge for her. I had to somewhat explain in a "kids friendly" way the "putting mafias into a jar" and the investigation chapter. But the manor? I knew it was coming and said "nah, not even gonna try". I couldn't find the skip the first time, so I just played the level without my sis around. I then had to proceed to completly *gaslight* her into thinking there is no Vanessa level, which was hard because SHE IS LITERALLY IN THE GAME'S LOGO.

**Explanation** A Hat in Time is 95% a campy goofy platformer game except for one mission in the Subcon Forest where you have to explore Vanessa's manor. First off, if you're strictly following the story up to this point, this marks your first encounter with the headless statues outside of Vanessa's front door, which remain normal about five to ten seconds after you come close before they suddenly chase after you. They cannot be outrun except with the Scooter, they cannot be damaged by anything (they don't squeak either), and a single one kills Hat Kid within seconds. You will already have found a few if you've been thoroughly exploring the forest, especially if Vanessa is your last contract. Secondly, once inside the manor, all your hats are disabled (except the Dweller Mask) and you have to deal with Vanessa - a shrieking shadow-woman who chases Hat Kid, grabs her by the throat, and turns her to ice. Inside the house are numerous previous victims of hers, all turned to ice in various terrified postures, alongside corpse chalk outlines and secret messages that are only visible with the Dweller Mask on. The first secret chalk outline you see is a man chained against the wall in the basement, who is revealed by Vanessa's diary to have been her lover who she went yandere on (implied to be the Snatcher.) Hat Kid has a special reaction to Vanessa that she doesn't use at any other point of the game - she falls down and scrambles backwards in terror. This occurs when Vanessa first appears and both times Vanessa's silhouette appears in the shower. This sequence is actually much shorter and easier than it seems - Vanessa's behavior is extremely simple and predictable and she only has three phases before you're done. You can complete it without any risk of her seeing you, though you will have to listen to the blaring siren panic theme that plays whenever Hat Kid is looking at Vanessa at least once. Vanessa can be skipped entirely by crawling between the barrels in the basement where you get a yarn, which takes Hat Kid directly to the attic. You only miss out on two gift boxes this way, which will be Rift Tokens if you've already gotten all the Relics from other gift boxes.

This was quite excellent, though I'm glad I didn't see it until after I bought & played the game to this point. That being said, I don't think you put NEARLY enough emphasis on how *unbelievably scary* those statues are. I think if I hadn't been slightly spoiled (ironically through this very video (which re-introduced me to AHIT such that I ended up buying it)), the Vanessa segments would've been much scarier than they were to me (& they were still scary), *however*... Those angel statues. *Nothing* had prepared me for those almost-quite-literally nightmarish things. Someday I'll probably write more on it, but hands-down those things have rustled my frickin' jimmies. It does *not* matter how many times I interact with them, either. *shudder*
