I have a sad health update - I have a brain tumour. Here's what it means for me as a pilot, whether I'll fly again, and what's going to happen next. Not the usual happy/silly video adventure that I usually like to post, but I wanted to be honest with you and share this change in my life. Thanks for all the support that everyone has shown to me so far.
If I can use this video to just encourage anyone else out there who may be experiencing headaches, or anything that they're not sure about with their health, to go and see a doctor as soon as you can to get it checked out. Most of the time it will be nothing, but in case it is something it's better to get it sorted out sooner.
Big love to you all as always,
Stef

I have been a long-time viewer of your videos, and it’s disheartening to hear that you’re facing such difficult times with your health. I sincerely wish you all the best and hope that you receive the necessary assistance to overcome your brain tumor. Should you ever visit Texas, specifically Houston or San Antonio, I would be honored to personally take you on a flight in my vintage V-tail Bonanza. Wishing you a speedy recovery and please keep us informed of your progress.

Hi Stef, having followed your highs in the sky for many years, be assured that I will be thinking positive thought whilst you go through this medical low. I am certain that you have flown on the same flights that my spouse and I have enjoyed. Perchance we might now meet in person as we look for a coffee to enjoy, in what I suspect shared neighbourhoods. Wishing you and family ( plus cat) strength and a rapid recovery. ❤

Stef...mate...I think I speak on behalf of the whole Aviation community when I say we are here for you. Not just because of your personal contributions to GA, but because like it or not you're a member of a community that rallies together and fights for one of its own. Your willingness to confront this head on and share with the community so openly will be a source of strength for many who are attempting to deal with their own issues; so thank you for that. Next time you're in the UK there's a seat in my aircraft, until you have your medical back you're always welcome.

Oh gosh! I'm so pleased that the neurosurgeons thinks it's most likely benign. My dad had a brain tumour, unfortunately it was already an aggressive grade 1V Glioblastoma when it was diagnosed, and as you probably know there's no cure for that and he sadly passed away only 4 months after diagnosis. It's so good to hear such a positive outcome with your tumour, and I hope you soon make a full recovery 😊

Your video came up in my feed today. I can relate. I'm a private pilot in the US and I also had a brain tumor. Like yours, my doctors were also fairly sure that it was benign. And it turned out to be benign which is good. Mine was diagnosed when I was in college, before I started flight training. I had complications post-op so the FAA made me jump through a lot of hoops to get my medical. I hope you don't face any complications, but expect the authorities to request some more medical testing, or even a proficiency flight with one of their inspectors. If you have questions about the brain tumor surgery, flying post-op or anything, and you'd like to talk, let me know how to contact you.

That is devastating news Stef. My heart goes out to you. Yours is seriously one THE best you tube flying websites out there, really nicely crafted (as a longterm ex BBC docs director I can't believe how you do it all yourself), with a natural ability to connect with audiences that just leaps off the screen, not to mention your passion and enthusiasm for our wonderful and beautiful hobby. I too have been off flying for several months now for medical reasons, after hundreds of fun hours over the years flying my C182 from my home base of Denham to places around Europe and even last year to North Africa, so your infectious spirit of adventure really chimes with me... And I know how bloody hard it is not to get into that left-hand seat! Good luck mate - really. You're right, you do have a strong and concerned community of well-wishers and supporters. We may be out here in cyber-land but we're no less real.

In the hope that it helps, I'll add that a good friend was informed last year that he had a tumor on his pituitary gland, which due to its location deep in the brain, sounded like a terrifying proposition. Hi Stef, I’ve been watching you for many years but never commented. What a really humble video. Look at all the comments in just seven hours. It just shows how much you are loved. My partner was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer about a month ago and I see so many similarities with how you are feeling as she did. We’ve cancelled our trip to Thailand and commenced chemo right away, so it was a lot to process. Just know you aren’t alone in this, I’m sure you’re aware you have a very loving partner and daughter who will support you through this experience. And as you say, you’ll come out better and stronger at the other end, which you will. Sending much love for the months ahead and a speedy recovery.

Brave posting. Good on ya. It truly sucks, but you're right: could be worse. I'm glad it isn't cancer. We all face 50:50 odds of dealing with cancer somewhere; if it isn't that then it's potentially something else. Hopefully, whatever we face, it's treatable, as your condition appears to be. I've just finished my own primary treatment this year for cancer. Thank goodness for modern medical care! And for socialized health care, so your family doesn't go bankrupt. I'm glad you're being cared for well. We'll all look forward to your recovery. Meanwhile I've subscribed & will enjoy viewing your previous posts. I'm grateful to have found your channel through Petter's kind direction (Mentour Now!). We'll all look forward to your continuing posts, and to hearing you're better soon.

My best friend graduated from high school in 1973, and he and I went to different universities. We were both busy and only got in touch every few years. Very moving and inspiring response to a serious health problem. Attitude in illness, as in most things, can and often does make all the difference and your attitude to your medical problem is excellent. Looking at the positive side of things is always best and the the positive side of your situation is that your tumor is both non cancerous and highly operable. Advances in medicine have been most pronounced when it comes to surgery with treatments for chronic medical problems lagging far behind. As they say here in America "keep ya chin up" and look forward to the resumption of your life in and out of the cockpit once you put all of this behind you! All my best and hope for a rapid and complete recovery!

Mentour Pilot send me. Survivor of a Vestibular schwannoma removed in 2019, and still have one on my pituitary gland. No real changes in my life though it took a few weeks to learn how to walk again. You’ve got this. Best regards

I'm another Mentor Pilot wishing you all the best. There are so many truths in the message you're passing along to your subscribers, not the least of which is talking to professionals. In this internet information age, all too often, we rely on our own so-called expertise. As sad as I am for what you're going through, I'm glad you found the issue as early as you have. You'll come through this. I know you will.

I work in a major Sydney teaching hospital and have a colleague who also had an accessible, moderate size non-malignant brain tumour. It manifested symptomatically at work with a convulsion. Within a couple of days, it had been removed by a superb female neurosurgeon, leaving only a couple of tiny scars. That was 14 years ago. You are awesome and thousands in your online aviation world are now willing the very best for you.

A shout out to your doctor who, (me reading between the lines), must have listened, recognised that they were not "ordinary" headaches and ordered the MRI. We read a lot of criticism of doctors in the media (especially social media) for not taking patients seriously and overlooking serious conditions. When an astute doctor does something good for a patient, it's not newsworthy so we rarely hear that side. It's refreshing to read something positive. All the best.

Hi Stef... Walking home from a late movie, saw the "not clickbait" title and oh my gosh it's just shocking. Always enjoy your videos, but of this is the video that I will most remember. Of course you have support all over the world, including right here in New York City. Look forward to your safe and healthy return to the skies and many more stories and adventures to share. So gracious and supportive of you to give back to all of us, I hope that giving makes you stronger still. Best wishes from our family..Rob A

Sorry to hear you’re unwell but glad to hear it’s a positive prognosis. As everyone else has said we’re here for you as your virtual family, if you need to vent we can take it. I think my first instinct would be to name the tumour, to try and make some humour where possible with family and friends. Maybe I’m just an odd Englishman though…😬
