So I recently discovered I have a condition called "visual snow", which is not new for me, but I didn't know it had a name, or was even different from what other people see. I seem to have a mild case that doesn't interfere with my life at all, but basically my entire field of vision has a kind of low-level static noise. Apparently it's very rare, and many people and even doctors have never heard of it. I only happened to find it by chance after randomly googling 'visual static' out of curiosity, and read more into it. But some people have much more severe cases of it that are very debilitating, so I figured I'd make a video talking about it.

I didn't know visual snow existed but I do notice its symptoms. I can make it resemble images/objects sometimes, though I cannot really control what. Also, it gets worse the more unconscious I become (when sleepy), or when not using my eyes.

Madzie 2000 i think i have it (or something like it) because when i look around in any light condition if i focus on it it gets super bad where i see patterns in green/red overlaying my vision where i get so indulged in it i end up missing 5 mins of class. I also seem to get distracted easily so when i start noticing the visual snow i end up staring off into space for long period of time without noticing what i’m doing.

I’m so glad people are trying to spread awareness of this as it may be annoying for a lot of people. I have the (disorder?) where I just see static it’s like what he showed but slightly less mild and I just thought it was normal till I for some reason thought it wasn’t, mostly because I don’t think your vision is supposed to look like an early 2000s live tv show. I can see it better when I focus on it and even have this floater (If floaters are supposed to go away then I’m screwed cause this thing’s never gone away) and I never knew it was so rare to the point most eye doctors don’t even know the (disorder thingy) if it isn’t going to get worse or if it isn’t going to kill me or something I kinda wanna keep it (even though it makes me highly sensitive to light, usually takes me a good 20/30 minutes just to stop squinting and car lights are way to bright for me (I HATE high beams) but a lot of my family tell me I can see very well in the dark compared to them like I was able the see a sign that said 60 mph maybe like 130 feet away before my mom could read it. Long story short thanks for giving your time for a incurable maybe soon to be curable (disorder thingy... I’m not sure if it’s a disorder, a disease or what)

the real reason this needs awareness. is because eye doctors are uneducated on this. they always run it off as floaters and rarely bring attention to u. for my expirence when I was 5 I woke up with it I thought I had a superpower lol. but as I got older. the symptoms like after images in darkness. got worse. the visual snow never got worse

I have visual snow. I’ve had it for about 5 years now from what I can remember. I’ve noticed that it gets more severe when I don’t sleep well and when I don’t take care of myself the way I should with eating and stress relieving habits. I have a sudden and random ringing in my ears and I’ve anxiety for ever. The more research I do the more I start believing that these are all connected. Visual snow does affect my daily life, I hope that one day it goes away as randomly as it came.

I’m starting to think I might have this. I always assumed everybody has this like overlay of static in their vision so I never thought anything of it. It never affected my vision or anything and my brain usually ignores it, for lack of better words. But if I want to see it I can. Learning that not everyone has this is very weird for me. I’m still somewhat convinced that I’m overreacting and assuming I have a disorder that actually don’t have and that what I’m experiencing is something everyone has. I don’t know

Not all migraines hurt BTW ou guys could have silent migraines with ocular disturbances if it comes and goes like w me and isn't all the time. (I have alot of the other symptoms as well.) Anycase. Back to the point. Most of these snow symptoms and others like it happened when I damaged the very upper area of the spine. From shoulders up into the skull, my disks slip in and out alot you see after that. ... when slipped out... alot of these symptoms show. Get your necks looked at for alignments and goto a neurologist

Omg, thank you so much for making this video. I have this exact condition. I actually thought that I was seeing energy or the fabric of our reality. Lol But anyway it's like static or like you said snow. Its moving as well. I can't really tell if there is color to it or if it's clear. It's really annoying when I look up at a blue sky. All my life I've had it and even thought that maybe I had a detached retina or something. But now I know I'm not the only one who experiences this.

I finally told my optometrist about this and I’ve gone through a lot of testing this past two months but nothing has actually been discovered. I’ve had an MRI which turned out fine and multiple eye exams which showed no deviation from normal. I had a lumbar puncture today and I’m waiting for results. Every single time I took a test or had an exam, the person giving the exam would ask why, then I would tell them and they looked at me like I was crazy. My sister said she saw it too, but she took it back after she saw that I had to go take these tests. She changed her experience to just seeing it when she stands up really fast.

I made some research and it turns out that what ppl call “Visual snow “ is actually ppl seeing there own “INTRISIC EINGENGRAU” wich is basically the adaptation of the eye to color in general. It’s not supposed to be a problem but for ppl who have anxiety, OCD, ADHD, etc... it might cause some disturbances or over awareness of this phenomenon due to over sensitive areas of the brain.

@@philippe6787 VSS is often accompanied with physical symptoms like tinnitus, photophobia, nyctalopia and even migraines. There are modern medical tests like brain imaging modalities, FDG PET and VBM to diagnosis people with VSS These tests find brain metabolism and grey matter volume changes as surrogate parameters for brain function and structure in patients with VSS. If you look at the sky you can see your white blood cells moving fast through the air giving you that perception Everyone sees life a little bit different but you have to understand there almost no limits to these symptoms for some People with VSS have more then just static visuals and they disrupt everyday life whether they notice or not

@@dietcokezeros942 I think it depends on the individual. Certainly thinking too much about any chronic medical condition is going to make you more anxious about it, and that's going to make everything feel worse. But some people are more affected by anxiety than others. I'm kind of aware of my visual snow all the time, but usually not thinking about it much. It feels a bit of an exaggeration in my case to say I forget about it as such, but it's just like this is just how my life is, it's not a big deal kind of thing, from a psychological perspective anyway, although it does affect my physical ability. I think it is easier to live with when you're focusing on whatever it is you're doing rather than how your VS is affecting whatever it is you're doing

The famous French painter Georges Seurat must have had this condition as well. He used it to his advantage by creating visual masterpieces. Monet's severe myopia was the genesis of his astounding Impressionistic paintings. The condition is very likely caused by some neurological idiosyncrasy and not by a mechanical flaw in vision. And you are correct in assuming that this condition is just another phenomenon in your basket of unique characteristics that makes you so special. Very interesting video ♥

@@user-lw5oc1tt8k So that people who have visual snow can find others who have it, which is really important for some people as they might feel like they're going crazy if they've suddenly acquired it and it can make some people less anxious about it to know that they're not crazy and other people have it too and that, y'know, they're not dying or anything. Also it means that people can ask questions about the symptoms other people experience as there's a lot of variation in both the types/number of symptoms and the severity of symptoms from one individual to another, so often people will make a post asking something like "how many people have this particular symptom?" or "how many people find visual snow debilitating?" or "is this thing that I'm experiencing related to visual snow?". And then it's also a place where people share news about research and awareness campaigns, like there was a medical conference on visual snow last summer which was publicised in visual snow facebook groups so that people who have visual snow would get to know about it. If a new research paper comes out, or an article is written somewhere in the media, or it gets mentioned somewhere (like this video, for example) that might be useful for people who want to find out more about the condition, people share those things in the facebook groups to let as many people as possible who have visual snow know about it. Basically, it functions as both a support group for those whose lives are significantly negatively affected by it, and as a platform for keeping up with the latest research and raising awareness.

Happens to me when I decide to focus the "air" and it is easier when there is light. And the little particules always move and I seem to see the Color Red/Yellow/Blue.

I had a very bad concussion and I’ve had visual snow ever since

Only adds to the vague theory that it’s caused by some hyperactivity in the visual circuitry of the brain. Where where you hit (in the concussion)?

@@abubakrakram6208 VSS is thought to be related to issues of the nervous system Brain image tests have further proved this theory I had a horrible bike accident that left permanent damage to my nervous system My visuals are nothing like a mild static and it annoys me to see people thinking this is normal

I got the same condition. Had it since my 20’s. It’s crazy, i felt like i was losing my mind at first. But i found some information on it and I wasn’t going crazy.

Jesus christ. I've been all my life thinking I was crazy cause nobody around me had something similar and even the freaking eye doctors said 'it was normal' and sometimes depicted it as 'the black dots everyone sees when waking up rapidly', but it is not. It hardcore blurs 90% of my field of view and it lasts a worring amount of time. Thanks for this video, thanks for letting me know about the initiative, and thanks for making me be able to put a name to it, i dont feel so alone and hope both my eye doctor and neurologist stop treating me like a normal patient.

Thank you so much for this video! All of a sudden I just woke up with it... but I’ve been dealing with anxiety and panic attacks for over than 5 years already, so probably it has to do with that.. I thought I was going crazy

this describes exactly how I see it. i didn’t notice it much in the morning before I knew this was a condition; but in the night it was vivid. i used to think I could see atoms. worst thing about it is, now you know some people can’t see it, now it’s very much there. you can’t unnotice it

Hey Joe, I haven't caught up with a lot of visual snow groups recently but I came across this video in one when scrolling through news recently. Thanks a lot for sharing your story, since it helps spread awareness.

I randomly woke up with this in September, and have been dealing with it for 9 months now. I have days where it’s very severe and other days where it’s barely noticeable. Thanks for sharing this so I know I’m not alone! It sucks not many doctors are educated on this, it took me 5 eye doctors and 3 neurologists later. I thought I was going blind for the first week and here I am months later. I also have light sensitivity especially driving at night. And seeing photo trailing. Thanks again!
