This is a book that shows us how a person who is unloved feels. In the end, he loses all hope for love, and that is very sad because he believed so hard. It shows us how much society can destroy our souls and minds. That is how I saw this book. I never saw it as discusting, but as the enormus pain of a soul that is behind discusting scenes. And you are great because you are weird; ordinary people are boring and mostly full of fakeness, which is why they fit in.

Just finished it… It was definitely a Scrootie McBooger Balls story 🤢😂.. One thing I couldn’t for the life of me work out was where it was meant to be set… It had a mixture of British, US and Aussie lingo. Whether that was the author’s intention to make the setting non-specific? But yeah, what a disgusting ride ! 🤮😂

So I just finished the book. Had a discussion with my partner about it. My best take away from this is that it's a heavy draw from the story of the false messiah. There's too much going on here that makes it not a coincidence. Like when Criggs dies he doesnt actually seem to mind it. If anything he's satisified with what his fate is and what Steven does. The cows eating the flesh scene is pretty much a "eat of my flesh". There's a lot here that basically points as a dark splatter punk retelling of the story of the false messiah.

Definitely a grotesque masterpiece for me. Been singing its praises for years. Really enjoyed your review, though, and understand your negatives about the book. I feel it's an incredible portrayal of alienation and how alienated people are attracted to potent sub-cultures. Personally, the animal abuse is bothersome, but less, for me, in fiction, than on screen. I ate up the grotesquerie, though, as I like that type of thing when it's well presented and has a philosophy behind it. Stokoe is a great writer, and it's been funny, over the years, seeing people tear the writing apart when what they're really doing is reacting to the content. His COLONY OF WHORES , HIGH LIFE, and EMPTY MILE are great, too, though very different to COWS. Great channel. ***would love you to cover BAXTER, THE CORMORANT, BIG GURL, HOGG, GEEK LOVE, HIGH LIFE, THE OUTSIDER/THE STRANGER (Camus), SURVIVOR (Gonzalez), SWEET EVIL (Platt), THE GAS (Platt), FUCKNESS, SOCIOPATHS IN LOVE (Andersen Prunty), THE DARK (Herbert) -- most not overly 'extreme' but worthy of debate. ***

I've watched other videos about this book with spoiler talk but you brought one new thing to me: the goose farm. No one has mentioned that until now. Before watching videos on 'Cows' I thought about reading this for it's reputation, but the one thing that stopped me was not the feces and gore. It was that it's badly written. Not the writing style, but the plot. I am not going to read a book where a herd of stampeding cows can make their way through an urban area with ZERO consequences! By the way, congratulations on getting the pronunciation of 'Stokoe' right. Others have failed to get it right!

The cows dug secret tunnels? How did the cows dig the tunnels? Are they like concealing these tunnels like POWs?? Seems unrealistic, cows creating tunnels xD they’d have to dig veryyyyy slight angles, because otherwise since cows are big & stupid, if they dug down they’d just fall in like idiots, & it’s not like they could use a ladder. Is this ever explained at all? Really weird lol. I saw you have “PENPAL”… did you ever read the other story from online that became a book as well? ‘BORASCA’?? I love your video reviews, your reactions and commentary are hilarious, yet concise and well reasoned! I agree with your reactions to Cows on all levels, and yeah it got a little artsy at times with the writing, and the Talking cows was just out of place and surreal for me. I read a lot of extreme Horror, Jon Athan being my favorite author of the genre. He has the unique ability to gross out and horrify without it ever seeming gratuitous or written for the sole reason of grossing one out. His characters are well written and sympathetic, he is an amazing author! There is one book that I have read where I felt dirty during and after reading it. And one that i thought crossed some boundaries that should not have been crossed, and that was HOGG by Samuel R Delaney. The only real value I found in it, is that it set a bar that in my opinion this Genre should never go to. A sort of warning sign if you will for other readers and authors. Just my opinion.

while i have a decent amount of respect for extreme horror as a genre I do think that anyone who writes that shit needs to be evaluated

This book sounds like a hot mess with a bad plot line. Thanks for saving me time. Also… I work in a nursing home as well and I can’t do scat either 😉

The only really disturbing thing about these wastes of paper is that their authors are totally effed in the head.

I hate it when a story takes a supernatural turn like in this book. Talking cows out of nowhere😡 throws it all off for me. But it seems like this man had a huge mental breakdown in a slaughter house and went on a killing spree because he loves animals.

@@ReadingWithMeg this happened to me when I read the extreme horror novel “Talia” as well. Really interesting and horrific story about the p*rn to snu*f pipeline. But the supernatural twist sort of ruins the ending for me.
