Congrats on the next step & new venture. I have recently come aboard as a viewer and cannot express the level of intrigue and fascination with your videos AND just listening to you speak about it all. When you talked about working under someone to learn for years and years, that really resonated with me. We have the problem in my industry(software) too. A lot of people assume that someone else knows better and they get into the habit of asking permission for everything. A lot of times you just have to try stuff for yourself to be able to grow. You can still learn form others, but just remember that nobody is born an expert. Really cool stuff on this channel, and I would love to work in an office like that!

You have a clarity of thought and ability to set a direction that few in the architecture business, let alone any other one, have. Most of us get started and wander like a pinball trying to develop into something. You appear to know what that something is and you have been able to get there in record time. The rest of us take most of our professional lives to get where you have in whatever time you’ve had to do it in, so far! It is thrilling to watch you develop and I at least feel lucky to have bumped into you on KZbin and watch you grow the way you want to grow!
@DamiLeeArch

Thank you! Actually the process of making videos help me clarify my thoughts, so the channel has been very helpful in that regard. I think most architects have the skill sets needed to build a cool business, but sometimes our education is also what gets in the way of venturing into foreign territory..

@@DamiLeeArch Agreed but you have tools we older ones did not have. My mechanism was to learn to program computers to automate our work in the days before and during the early days of CAD and I succeeded in being in a unique position for many years doing stuff others did not know how to do. The problem was that it ultimately was a dead end because I did not want to be a programmer but a Designer and Architect! Your take has given you perhaps the most valuable asset an architect could have, notoriety, giving you clients!! As you alluded, the Covid crises gave you the breathing room to develop the talents needed to make YT vids, a combination of events that you were able to exploit. You were in this way lucky but also uniquely talented unlike others like you, to make work for you!! That you are articulate on film and photogenic only adds to your allure!! :)

This is such precise, lovely praise, nixl. Where you said 'Most of us get started and wander like a pinball trying to develop into something. You appear to know what that something is and you have been able to get there in record time' - I discovered the word 'entelechy' recently. It means having both a personal vision and the ability to actualize that vision from within. Your comment reminded me of that 😊
@nixl3518
@nixl3518 Жыл бұрын
@@joshpipe7755 Thanks! It's how I really felt and continue to feel watching Dami's videos. She is brilliant and though she has tools that were unavailable to us not too long ago, I think she would have found her way to a similar position with whatever tools she woulds have had at a ny point in her career. BTW, thanks for the new word! It sounds so made up that I had to look it up! Turns out it comes out of Ancient Greece!!! Almost a tongue twister!! Don't know if I could embrace it into my vocabulary, but time will tell.

I needed this video so much.As a young architect I've been feeling like the "traditional" architecture firm has been slow to adapt to new technologies and even though I myself dwelve in things like VR, animation and even trying to mix architecture work with videos or social media most firms shy away from this. I've been wanting to take the leap to run my own creative hub and people like you inspire people like me to actually work towards those goals. Thank you for been an inspiration and can't wait to see where this new chapter takes you.

I came to enjoy your videos due to how you present architecture in such a relatable way. The thesis video that you've made about "the concept of the labyrinth and maze" and the explanation of what "aura" was really inspired me to look at art/places/things/experiences/etc from a different angle. So, hearing about what you've gone through in your workplace was great too, but mostly it's your content and your interest in these topics that made me keep coming back here again. Congratulations Dami! I've been watching your videos here and there for around half a year? now, even though previously I never really consumed architecture content or information before haha. I do love architecture, building design and stuff like that nature just wherever and whenever I go to cities like NYC, Chicago, Seoul, etc so I guess being interested in this channel isn't too out of left field. I enjoy you explaining things in a relatively easy to digest way, and the information on architecture is interesting too (I really like the sci-fi analysis videos and commentary on projects like "the line")! But to be honest, your enthusiasm and obvious passion and excitement in your videos on what your talking about and the effort you put into it is what really drew me in. Now seeing this video and you starting your own business is so cool! It's so obvious how excited and happy you are in this new path in your life, even before you said it out loud haha. At first, I was wondering - why does everything on this channel look so good? It must be because our host is both attractive and has got an artistic sense of taste she developed at uni which we STEM-types may never aspire to. But thankfully, this video showed there's more to it than that. If I had to condense the lessons, it would be these: 1. Things are going to look and work great if you can start from scratch and purpose-buy items (like the desks). 2. Conversely, if the space you're in already has a look you can draw inspiration from, so much the better. 3. If you invest a bit of work (like putting a backplate, a coat of paint and casters on the shelves) you have more freedom and can more easily realise your ideas. 4. Taking a step back, these desks probably don't look that way the entire time. My desk would look immaculate, too, were I to make a video, so we probably shouldn't beat ourselves up over the bowl of candy we have on our desks and which Dami has just hidden in her drawer ;-P One thing I disliked about the video: I constantly felt advertised to. The shared space, the desks, the shelves, the laser cutter. And I see the description is full of affiliate links. Now, I know this operation needs to make money, and that's fine. But I wonder, Dami - were you sponsored by Ergonofis or XTool? Or did you just get the products for free? It's OK if you were, but please make that clear. A one-liner in the description would have sufficed. ;-)

It's pretty awkward bringing up someone's appearance. Be less weird bro. In case you missed it, there was an ad component to this video. She is trying to hire. At 11:30 she's saying "you" as in the future employee or whoever is applying to work with her. She is trying to introduce her office and company informally to start the hiring process. You missed those two links that are application forms. You're probably right about the sponsorship as it's such an obscure product / company. Montreal isn't local to Toronto let alone Vancouver. Chances are they gave her a deal on the desks which is why she didn't mention a sponsorship. Their Instagram follows her and also they have a collaboration program (the ones I've seen are typically reduced pricing on products. Chances are they sold them at cost to her (probably 30-50% of the list price).

For some reason, youtube recommended your channel to me a few months ago and I have watched a few videos with great interest - the thing is that I am not an architecture and have no related skills(I am more of a finance guy) but somehow find your videos very interesting. I am also looking to build a home in Africa some time so perhaps that is why your channel came up? Anyway, good luck!

Congratulations. Amazing!!! Starting a business is always challenging, but you are doing an incredible job already. The clarity of your vision decides the thrust of the company. Doing what you want to do and doing what you do well do not always coincide when you are working for someone else. Sometimes it does - but not always. Doing for yourself doesn't;t mean you will be doing that either, but you get the best chance of doing it. Well done. It is not lost on me that you're a woman doing this as well with all that this adds, so extra well done for that as well. As a father of daughters - I applaud what you are doing - let's make this much more regular. Looking forward to projects and videos that inspire as much as you have been doing so far and maybe even more. To infinity.....you know ow the rest!

The office looks beautiful! It's my first time here in your channel, and for me the most impactful part was when you commented about how your career turned. Lately I've been feeling not as excited with my job, even though I love what I do, work at a great company and have some decision power, I feel like I have my hands tied for some stuff and it really disappoints me. I've been thinking that maybe having my own business could help because of the freedom I'd have, I'm just having a hard time something to start with. Thanks for commenting on how and why you decided it was time to start a new thing :)

I am only a new follower as of a couple of months ago. This is very exciting for you. I wish you all the best and am looking forward to the content you will create in the future. May you continue to find success in new adventures. Your videos have helped me as a mature student, now that I have almost completed my two-year diploma as a architectural technologist. I am currently completing my practicum, and will soon be looking for work. Watching your video's and a few other KZbin content creators' videos for ideas and inspiration to complete my own portfolio and get as many tools together as I prepare for the job hunt, so I may get as much experience as possible. Thank you for your inspiration and using your experience to guide others through their own challenges. It is very scary to make big changes to your life that may affect your life and all those actively involved in your life. But with a little encouragement and determination, each and every person can really reach for the stars. It is great to bear witness to someone like yourself realizing their visions and reaching for their dreams. Congratulations
