Referrals were how I got started. And as you said, you have to earn the referral. The person who referred me thought I was a disciplined student and referred me to a client on a budget. And the rest is history as they say. Nice vid!

This video is one of the best from "30x40 Design Studio" for people looking to improve their businesses. I will be very happy if I can get to the next step this year with some of the points you highlighted Eric. Following your channel helped me to focus on important issues to get back to work and your enthusiasms lifts me through rocky periods. Unfortunately, I am not sure where am I heading to (this is one thing to figure out this year) and I am proceeding slowly and with difficulty to find enough time, but as much as I feel frustrated sometimes having to look after my children (being trapped in the housewife role), now I realise that they can be another source of creativity, a new windows to the world. There is opportunity everywhere with the right approach. Thanks! x

I also keep a folder of all the projects I said no to! I think its a really great way, no matter how long you've been running your business, we can feel insecure at times and a little reminder to calm down in that moment is all you need to reassure yourself that "it's going to be ok!" (Of course, if you're doing the work to market yourself and not just hoping for clients to land in your lap!) Love your videos!

This is an awesome video. I just launched a drafting and design service before Christmas, then got pneumonia (fun!), so although I've laid a lot of groundwork and done a lot of research on who I should market to, pneumonia really took me off track and it's been difficult to get a grasp of who I should market to. As I'm not an architect (yet), I have limitations on what I can do and for whom. I also discovered my limitations based on the tools I have available. I recently heard a man say this. If you imagine a navy approaching a beachhead in a storm preparing for battle, there are three kinds of people: 1. Those who, from the bow of a ship, only see the storm 2. Those who, looking out from the ship to the beach, only see the obstacles 3. Those who, from the ship, only see the objective This video has helped me a lot to clear my head and set me back on the right path. Thank you for this one!

Hi everyone, I am an architectural/interior designer from Hong Kong. I am curious on the rate that successfully getting a client through social media marketing for architecture/building project in other places. . The reason I am asking is I feel like the investment for an architecture/building project is too much, it’s different from other design services like graphic/website. Client in my place would not look for designer through social media. For residential project, it may works for small scale project. But for commercial project, it seems referral is still the best way to get client. (At least in my place) Have not said that, I have been following this channel for awhile. This is my first comment and I want to give my sincere thanks to Eric for constantly provide value to us and this industry. You are a great mentor to me and to all designer/anyone in this field. Keep it up:)

So you got me...I'm 51, started my own design studio focused on furniture, cabinets, and millwork, in early 2019, and it's still slow going. Totally agree that clients arrive when its time and projects always have a way of arriving to meet the financial needs. I have a list of revenue streams that I am attempting to work on, but passive income is something that I hadn't heard before and is a bit intimidating since I'm largely disinterested in content management via socials. However, you present a deep challenge here, and it's one that I have been contemplating for years: that of building relationships with future clientele so they know you and trust you as a knowledge resource (via the internet and socials...oh the irony) before they ever need you to actually design anything for them. I am similar to you in that I have done podcasting for years, have done photography for 3 decades, video editing and producing, and I love writing. Putting all that together into a business model is something that has been difficult to grasp, but this video has helped me to see it from a different perspective. Your platform and voice has certainly been a source of motivation for me the last two years...I"m now fully entrenched in Notion because of one of your videos. Keep after it.
