I always enjoy seeing these 2D games that go the symphony of the night route with graphics, using superior hardware to make 2D games to surpass how they looked and ran back in the 16 bit days, rather than just using an 8 bit or 16 bit throwback style. You end up with something fun and fluid to play, with stunning visuals and usually a good soundtrack that isn't bit crushed to death.

i looked through the comments (not all of them) but from what i can tell no one has said it yet. The lady that you see before a boss fight can give you a good chunk of health if you fall low enough during the boss fight. its quite handy actually

Good review. Immediately I get the Symphony of the Night vibe (automap is literally identical) with its general timeline it takes place in, save places, item acquisition, great variety of low/medium level enemies, and over-the-top bosses. So glad it's released for PC & other consoles as the only advertisement I saw until recently was for the Switch. This game is going to sell a ton, and I guarantee is going to be a big addition to the speed runner community.

Metroidbourne. Soulsvania... okay, I'll see myself out.... P.S.: those NPCs offering you help with bossfights are basically healers. They are standing on the battlefield and giving you a bit of HP every now and then if it drops down to a critical point. I haven't figured out yet if asking for their help affects the overall story or not, but most of the time they are not very useful. Ironically enough, they only help with the bosses that aren't very difficult themselves. But when some really challenging opponent appears, there's noone to give you a hand.

Just in case, having Viridiana (the helper) is.. Kind of a joke? She doesn't fight but heals you. However once she casts her healing spells it takes some time to actually replenish your health bar and she does it only when you're low on hp (Need confirmation, if not it's actually so rare that i got healed only once when using her for testing). Another thing is once you asked for help, you can't go back, as in she disappears from the boss entrance and appears in the boss fight every single time. If you plan on going rambo, don't summon her at all. On a side note fuck that ice level. Some enemy placement made me go insane.

Yep my first thought was that it was basically a gothic Prince of Persia 2 especially the sword fighting mechanism. Obviously this is more detailed than that but the comparison is definitely accurate.

An interesting thing about this game is how little of it is mandatory to complete the main story. It's almost like a linear Castlevania game murdered and skinned a Metroidvania to wear as a cape. Unfortunately that makes the late game secret hunting a bit of a slog, but the main quest line is still great.

nice review as always! regarding your minor point over map markers, I particularly think they are neglegible....I played many games wwith them and the problem with those is that, or you have too little of them or too much but the same problem applies to both....you never remeber WHAT you marked the mapp for....I mean, what was the Item? was a Secret passage? some interesting stuff you saw? is a place to try with another power? so my suggestion would be, use a pen and paper. Use a pen and paper or a transparent paper to trace over the map screen and to put your own directions and descriptions.....another thing I enjoy doing is getting a notebook, a small one, just for these kinds of games, to put some directions, some maps, some curiosities while I play, like the journal in the uncharted games! :) some time in the future you will revisit the game am BAM! Instant guide! ;). but sometime i do miss having an easy to point map pointer like you said, but my way adds more enjoyment to the game, reminiscing from a past time where we didn't have internet and to beat a game we had to grind our brains and smash our heads against the wall(since you said you started to become more masochistic over the years with games xD). I really hope you see it ! this comment! :)

As far as I know, the little person that helps out with bosses just heals you when your health gets too low, but it isn't that great. They only heal you after going through a long animation, and have a long cooldown after. Plus you can only use them for a limited number of bosses, as they will physically age with each boss you use them for (I think you can only use them for two or three bosses). Past that, I don't know what they do, possibly make the bosses attack less frequently, or make your hits do more damage, but I can't confirm that.

Hey Icarus, if you're looking for some more Doom mods, might I recommend Fears? It's done by the guy who made Strange Aeons, Project Einherjar, and Splatterhouse 3d and it's awful and I hate it but it's not that bad. Honestly the weapons are the best part. They kick ass.

Disagree on screwup penalties being too lenient. I thought it was absolutely refreshing to not have to worry about some drastic setback all the time for a change. Too many games try to do this type of stuff now because for some reason we kind of accepted it in the Dark Souls series. Plus, Blasphemous can get quite mean and even cheap at times and put you through a bunch of crap, and then there's the somewhat suspect collision detection and jump delay, which often results in you landing in another dumbass deathtrap for no reason. If the game was really punishing in terms of setback mechanics on top of that, it could really start to overshadow the good stuff it has going for it.

It looks really cool and I did the mistake of downloading it. Is not like the game is bad, but this goes a bit into the realms of "difficult", and I am quite useless for platform games. After ~20 times watching the animation from the first boss over and over after getting killed near instantly I parked the game and regretted spending money on it. It is like when you need to restart a section of a game and listen to the dialogues over and over again, it is not that long, but it is the first boss, I can't defeat it and I don't want to know how the rest of the game would escalate.

The problem with the death penalty is that you don't really need to use magic, so you can safely ignore your MP loss and still comfortably beat the game. It should have been an HP decrease or losing healing flasks instead.

Checkpoints that refill health and respawn enemies is the reason for the comparison. Since dark souls popularized that mechanic, anything that uses it inevitably gets compared to the progenitor of said mechanic.
