As a huge fan of the AC series, i don't think you got anything to worry about when it comes to our community being frustrated on you. Like you already mentioned, you might be saying things wrongly, but that is understandable as this is quite a deep series and i won't go out of my way to correct you. Seeing you as a new player willing to learn and adept to what the game was throwing at you was really nice to see, though i guess if you needed to learn about stuff from the game, we are always willing to give feedback/help, could have prevented a tad of your beginner frustrations. I did enjoy this review, the complaints you had were understandable but you had a lot of good things to say as well. But as for the framerate... well this is the ps3 version which was notorious for it's framerate issues compared to it's xbox 360 counterpart.

The fanbase is indeed ravenous but mostly we tear apart morons. This is not a moronic review, this is a review that shows a willingness to learn and accept. Many people give up and don't get it. Many, many people give up. Armored core is a game that requires a bit of dedication to truly enjoy, but when you adapt to it's quirks, the level of detail and complexity in the mechanics allows you to truly master it on your own abilities.

TroidHunter I gotta agree. When I first started out, my only objective was to make the coolest shit I could...it worked kinda fine for a bit,but then I started to realize what some numbers meant.i then realized that I can shut look cool and function great, and then I did. I would say simple,but this game franchise is far from simple.

Not really a good enough reason since Dark Souls was a hit. BTW Armored Core 4 and 4A is made by Hidetaka Miyazaki before he worked on the Soulsborne die twice games. So this is the Giant Dad of all of his titles. The fact that those are so well received due to their hard mechanics mean simply that AC just failed in marketing. Still, it manages a global audience despite of all that. Even more when mech games arent big at all outside of Japan. It isnt about "people giving up on it" It simply is all about the bandwagon effect. The only thing i can think off that is different in style for Miyazaki's games compared to this one is the way the story is handled. Theres little interaction to the players when it comes to giving the story. Its all done via loading screens and mission briefings (if at all since they arent delivered in as expositions) and dialogues that are easy to miss. I mean their lines are measly one or two lines. Majority of them are based on reactions in the field as well or mission updates. The story is being told by the actions and so if you come in as people who just work to win the contract, youd miss them. That difference aside, Soulsborne games arent different from their predecessor.

It's always nice to see a fresh face enjoy the game. when the missions get harder it'll probably become frustrating learning how to fine tune your mech, but that's one of the strongest points of the game to me. as an ac4a vet, this was a pretty decent review. It takes a lot of diligence to understand what each of those numbers means, and even more so to craft the ideal setup of parts as per what kind of AC youre trying to make.

God I miss Armored Core. It was unintuitive, janky, awkward, and at times frustrating, but no other games quite manage to fill the gap it’s absence has left behind. I think the barrier for entry might be too high for mostly players, but if FromSoft can find a way to bring it back (that is to say, make it profitable when they could be making Souls games instead) whilst retaining the soul of AC I’ll name my firstborn FromSoftware.

Years before Namco Bandai started working gunpla kitbashing into their Gundam games, we were building detailed model kits in For Answer, covering them in little custom decals, right down to the tiny ones like kill markers for the ACs we’ve taken out, “No Step” signs, and maintenance panel lines, and flying around in them blowing stuff up. I can understand running out of ammo your first time fighting Spirit of Motherwill, but getting your mech that flies like a jet fighter shot down repeatedly by a walking oil rig is adorable.

It's been more than 5 years, and seeing that stage with the huge gun/missle spider thingy instantly reminded me of how frustrating that mission was. I died on that mission more than in all of the AC games I played combined. Still loved the game to pieces. Then AC V came out, and killed the franchise by making the mechs sluggish. They almost made it into a Front Mission type of game, and the last Front Mission was most similar to AC.

Funny stumbling upon this as a recommended video. The review is definitely how I would see a new player that started to take some bites into the game and try to figure out what flavor the meal was. Slow, methodic chews, trying to identify every new little explosion. The game has an incredible amount of depth, as I could tell you realized. What most could write off immediately as clunky, compared to what the game looks like when it's fully understood and played by a very skilled player, it's more like a dance. That's the thing about Armored Core. It's always been about the customization, the piloting skills, and the nature of the pilot themself. From 1997, to 2013, it's always been this kind of gem. But it didn't shine properly to a mass audience because of the massive difference of how the game played as a beginner, and the way the game played as a high skilled veteran of the series. Not to mention the struggles this game had with the technology it was made for. Funny enough, the graphics were toned down heavily compared to Armored Core 4 solely because of the larger, more bombastic fights, like against arms forts and whatnot. I hope the next armored core title gets a look by you. Your humor was refreshing, as were your edits and transitions.

FromSoftware have always made AC a game that primarily caters to it's core fans, so it isn't surprising for someone new to be a little iffy on the whole thing. The core fans can sit at any AC game and be at home in about twenty minutes, and it's one of the reasons that it has such an enduring base; having played at least a few missions from every title besides ACV/Verdict Day, my impression is that it's a game for the fans even if some changes have been hit or miss in the community. Your point about ZOE2 is great one; the thing is this is to ZOE2 what FlightSim X is to Ace Combat 4 or Gran Turismo to NFS. It's probably no coincidence that most AC fans also enjoy classical J/TRPGs a lot. They share that spreadsheet simulation feel. If you really want some jank and framedrop, play Project Phantasm. For a more friendly entry play AC3. For one similar to AC4 play Nexus/Last Raven. I'm one of the die-hard PS2-era games fans myself, but glad to see people play any of the titles of this awesome franchise. As a side note, if you look around, I vaguely remember someone setting up a way to tunnel the iLink on the PS2 over the net to have a pseudo online connectivity in a few of those titles.

Huh... Another 4A review today. What are the odds? Regardless, let me be the first to say that I actually, really appreciate this review. As an AC vet, who gets a headache whenever new people try to come into Armored Core, simply because 'They don't get it,' it's actually very refreshing to be able to watch a review, and think: "Hey, this guy kinda gets it!" The willingness to explore the game, and actually want to figure out how things work? I wish all new players to the series had that capability, before writing the games off as clunky hunks of garbage. (Your review style is pretty entertaining, as well.) I don't think you need to worry, too much, about that ravenous fanbase coming to tear you a new one...

Raw fire power totally works. You just went about it the wrong way. The machine gun weapon arms, gatling back Cannon & shoulder slug cannons coupled with the fcs you get starting as an independent turns you into a fucking bullet dragon capable of shredding even the most heavily armored AC's in under 15 seconds. 5 guns firing in unison at a single target makes for really short fights.

I actually have all the Armored Core games apart from 2 Japanese Market only spinoffs for the original game on PSOne and for my money AC4/For Answer is the high point of the series. Especially For Answer. They both brought a real sense of speed and pressure to the series but the extra control tweeks that FA got put it ahead of the rest. Wish From Software would step away from the Souls games long enough to give us another Armored Core, or even better, that they get a crack at the Gundam franchise some day.

2 minutes in, you mention the story is a framework. This is actually a staple of the series. Although it deviates from this from time to time I thought I'd point out that one of the major points for selling the feeling of being a merc free to choose his own missions is that most of the games work like this. As far as the fA and V generation of games go, I've heard there's peripheral merchandise which flesh out the world, ala Gundam, but if you dig in the games you won't really find that much as they're primarily a vehicle for the gameplay, with only teases at the lore. 4 minutes and 20 seconds in, you mention it's hard to pay attention to the HUD. fA probably has the worst HUD in the series, I'll admit. V/VD does a better job by literally putting it all in the middle of the screen in a non-intrusive way. Past games had the bars and numbers being larger and more colorful, on the sides of the screen. It's not uncommon for even someone who's been at this since '97 to forget to notice how my energy bar is doing. Part of this is because fA, more than any other game, provides you with an extreme surplus of energy, allowing all but the most energy hungry of AC's to remain airborne when not engaging is some serious evasive maneuvers. If the game's were more "hard sci-fi" like the old ones, the amount of time you'd spend checking those bars probably would result in better awareness of them, so it may also be a game mechanic issue more than a HUD issue. At 8 minutes and 30 seconds. I never understood why this scared people off. They picked up a game about customizing a robot. What were they expecting? I often see the menus cited as a detriment to the game "unless you're in to that sort of thing", as the reviews often say. I always felt it was like saying a racing game "involved trying to get your vehicle in to first place a lot, but that's not so bad, if you're in to that sort of thing!" At 9 minutes and 15 seconds, you mention frame rate. For whatever reason, on the 360 at least, plasma weapons kill frame rate. I noticed that you liked to use them. If you have more than 100 or so missiles in world, the frame rate suffers as well. I assume that for the missiles bit, it's to allow the game to maintain play speed with out slow down. I think it's just pushing the consoles to their limits with all the different things that they're having to keep track of. Part of why we see such small matches for FPS games, with teams cut in half compared to their sizes on PC, I suspect. These are the two main reasons for frame rate drop. I don't think I've ever had frame rate loss except for those reasons. I also suspect this is why the game is kind of bland looking. I think it's all about resource conservation to improve the gameplay. 10 minutes and 54 seconds, you bring up the vagueness of the motherwill mission. They actually don't mean any guns in particular. You just need to do enough over all damage to cause the internal fires to be unstoppable, this is why they don't specify a singular target. Chances are, you simply did enough damage that when you blew the missiles up, you finally met the mission's damage requirements. I find this critique to be interesting because the biggest complaint about motherwill is that the mission is too easy (It was the hardest of the arms forts for me, but that's what I usually see from others) and that 4/fA were in general were just too easy 99% of the time.

I'm not sure if you can copy disc data to the ps3 hdd for easing the load on the CPU, but I've run into little to almost no lag and loads much faster since I've done this on my 360 with all of my physical copies as compared to playing without copying the disc data. On a side note: if you do that while your discs are still readable and happen to accidently damage them with scratches later on, more often than not your disc will still run perfectly is what I've experienced, but more specifically that's a precaution to take if you have an S or E model of 360, the white Jerry model had a superior reading eye compared to the newer versions but that doesn't make up for shit life span.

As a AC vet I'm shock people still talk about one of my favorite games. I was fearing this series was gonna fall into obscurity, but then I saw this video. I hope the new players get into acvd since it's the most recent one that requires strategy. Just asking; have you review Armored Core Silent Line?

Danielsonic 87 to be fair, when miyazaki left to work on the soulsborne series, the people who had to pick up the gauntlet had really big shoes to fill. Miyazaki's contribution to the AC series changed it enormously that veteran players of the series were quite torn, myself included, when AC4 came out. I believe i only managed to tolerate it when i was doing multiplayer missions and getting late game items. Or that defeating Berlioz (not on story mode) was the thing that sold me. Then I completely loved AC4A after that. I was really glad about ACV going back to the roots but they were done badly. Luckily they improved upon it on ACVD. Still not there as the previous title but at the very least, they were close and it was really well made in multiplayer. Now that miyazaki is working on the 6th, along side Elder (something) and another title, hopefully the story and gameplay will be a whole lot better. I hope they keep the multiplayer team department for the 6th installment series though. Ive always disliked how the Soulsborne titles arent impressive when it comes to multiplayer.

As an old-school AC fan who hasn't played in years (i got in in the ps1 era, played HxC through the ps2 era, and never bought any playstation hardware after that.), your take is pretty spot on from my perspective. I'm fairly excited for what AC6 could offer, with fromsoft having so much more resources and experience at this point, and the hand-off to a new director. The issues you talk about like AI i assume will be addressed fairly well, and i can only assume that they'd do a somewhat better job of directing you through a mission, not in a hand-holdy way but enough info to know what you are after lol.

I love armored core but I still don't quite understand everything about 4 and for answer, I spent a much longer time with the ps2 releases, last raven in particular. Sadly I have no friends that play the series at all to learn things from. If only there were more tutorials for this game, a notable one that goes over small things not covered in the tutorial about boosting has increased my survival odds greatly with that knowledge alone since I seem to have a hard time getting out of being strictly a ground fighter.

Watching this again, I also forgot to mention. The A.I is crap for a reason. You're on normal mode. The only period of good A.I. you'll experience is hard mode and against other NEXTs. Also, this game was downgraded in terms of A.I. and difficulty due to the level of movement available, while in AC4, it was much less so. You can still get absolutely styled on by enemy ACs if you make a bad play. It's like Smash bros. Sure, the bots are bad. But do something dumb, and you might just find yourself surprised at what happens.

This was a franchise I really wanted to get into. But as Europeans, we got a big of a rough treatment with it. Basically every time a new game came out in Japan and America, we'd already be a game behind. Hard to remain excited for a series, when we are given the old scraps nonstop.

@thorhighheels
@thorhighheels 8 жыл бұрын
+Hemang Chauhan Alotta people say 4 is the best one, which is very similar to this. But then, plenty of people also prefer the older ones, as they were a lot slower. 4 changed how the series played apparently, which kinda split up the fan base. Don't quote me on any of this though! I only played this one so far, so I can only go off what I've heard others say.

+Hemang Chauhan Most vets will tell you that Last Raven is the top game. And they aren't necessarily wrong. It is a very good game. It's also not one that I would wish on any new player, as it's crushingly unforgiving. Personally, as far as the older generations go, I prefer 2nd gen (AC2/Another Age). A lot of newer players will claim that 4/4A are the best, and that does have merit as well. 4th gen is, in my opinion, the best the series has to offer, in terms of story content. It has a bitchin' soundtrack as well. But, that's about where 4th gen and I part ways. I like the games well enough to enjoy playing them, a few of the mechanics make me prefer older gens, or 5th gen much more. A lot of people will try to tell you that 4th gen changed AC drastically, and they aren't really wrong, I guess. Though, I personally feel like 4th gen is a natural evolution of the gameplay from gens 1-3, which all play remarkably similar. So, sure, adding in quick-boosts and essentially making the player ten times more powerful with their loadout, does change the game significantly, but the core mechanics and gameplay are still pretty similar to the old titles. And then we get to 5th gen. If people thought 4th gen turned the gameplay on its head, then 5th gen makes it do cartwheels. And that's probably why a lot of series vets hate ACV/Verdict Day. I am one of the few vets who actually likes the games. In fact, 5th gen is my favorite in the entire series. But, that probably has something to do with the fact that they're more focused on the online, multiplayer aspect, than the single player part... (I always wanted an AC "Online" when I was younger, and now I have it.) If you're looking to get into the series, I would recommend starting off at any of the base generation titles (AC1, AC2, AC3, AC4, ACV). They're all fairly easy, once you take the time to learn mechanics, and such. After that, expand to the other titles as you see fit.
@hemangchauhan2864
@hemangchauhan2864 8 жыл бұрын
***** If going after the base serie is the best way to start, then out of AC2 and AC3, which is the best one to start? I can enjoy fairly difficult games (like good amount of Dark Souls), but I need the one with most polish (ie controlling feels good, less glitchy, better frame rate) It'd also be great if either of two has more content.
@Gripheenix
@Gripheenix 8 жыл бұрын
+Hemang Chauhan I would honestly say that AC3 would be a better jumping off point. AC2 is a fantastic game, but it was a launch title for the PS2, so it's not without its hiccups. Though, if you don't mind a bit of a difficulty wall, and are looking for more control options, I would even suggest Nexus. Reason being, that in terms of the actual controls (which you can completely rebind in every title in the series), AC2/AA, and AC3/SL, while allowing you to use the R3/L3 buttons, won't actually let you bind controls to the sticks themselves, for some reason. Nexus is the first entry in the series that allows you to make use of analog controls. Also, Nexus isn't really tied into AC3 or Silent Line. (Nexus, Ninebreaker, Formula Front, and Last Raven are all generally considered "Gen 3.5". They're still technically 3rd gen titles, as they aren't preceeded by a numbered entry, other than AC3, but they're kinda their own little stand-alone thing, apart from AC3/SL.) Though, from what I understand, the AC3 and Silent Line ports for PSP do allow for analog control, when played on a Vita. I don't own a Vita, so I can't confirm this. But, it's worth looking into, if you do have one.

calling this game fast is like calling the movesets in MHW "complex". Only applies if you have never sunk into a sim/brawler game before, the individual gameplay aspects are fairly straight forward, the preparation and custoisation is where the complexity lays if you pick 1-2 build types the individual aspects are fairly straight-forward (console multi-button comands non-withstanding), the finesse and mastery come from nailing attack/dodge timings(that admitedly i'm bad at). ballsy as that sounds, ACs control like a mix of fencer/wing-diver in EDF5 with a lock-on for many weapon types, where as MHW combat reminds me a lot of soul blade or devil may cry, you get a lot of specialist-tools but your bread and butter tends to be a very basic/repeatable combo. I'd kill for these to be on PC, but fromsoft seem to have totally abandoned the franchise.
