The level of maturity in deconstructing what is a really underwhelming and disappointing story, whilst acknowledging that there's not much the writers could have done in that situation, is the exact reason you stand out on this platform. Shortcomings and issues with games are never usually simple, and going the extra mile to find out just what went awry with the story was definitely worth it.

I do agree with this, yet the original story from the reveal trailer was supposed to be Iden being a super loyal Imperial all the way through to the First Order l. I was disappointed after realizing when I finished the campaign, it was false advertisement. They literally changed everything in the story and made it into a typical rebellion movie. I wanted an all Imperial story. But I guess that'll never happen soon. And the expansion for the campaign was even worse and just ended without any continuation after Iden's death. It could've continued. But it didn't. Left me even more disappointed and thinking there will be no more singleplayer content, whether it be campaign or not. Sure, Arcade gets more maps with every season content drop, but we need more than maps. We need game modes, larger battles, even Galactic Conquest. I want to stop playing this game and give up. But there's still content being added. But it's slow and it's only being implemented in small or half portions, not making it better at all. I just dont know anymore, but I really do want this game to get better.

What I love about your critical reviews on games is how you're three-dimensional. Even in controversial games like Battlefront II, you manage to show a level of praise in certain aspects of the game, give your critiques of it's flaws, and even go in-depth analysis on the cause of the game's said flaws. The best part is how you do this all together with a smooth, coherent narration, and a subtle sense of humor.

09:33 Walt Williams (rephrased): "The characters have to defect because we are afraid of showing too much about the First Order ahead of Last Jedi's release". 1) Are you that poor of a writer that you can't write around such a restriction? 2) Why is your immediate instinct to include a cliché copout plot device like defection to avoid this? In a story that finally makes the bad guys the protagonists? 3) Did you and your overlords truly think that revealing some details about the First Order could in any way compromise the Last Jedi's chance to succeed at the cinemas? 4) Why was this not a selling point instead? Offering sneak peaks would boost sales. Does Disney/EA not want to make money? The great irony here is that there was _nothing special about the First Order_. Nothing that needed concealing, they are a carbon copy of the Empire. They compromised the integrity of their story for NOTHING. My take is that the writers are either stupid, poor storytellers or don't get Star Wars.
@waking00one6 жыл бұрын
Forgetting the fact they likely had to make the story directly related to the movies because they've been instructed to yet couldn't tie it to anything because they weren't allowed to. Being a writer for a project so tightly controlled is nigh impossible and management is spectacularly incompetent with these things.
@samzilla5676 жыл бұрын

@Trikeboy26 жыл бұрын
The Sequel Trilogy excuse for the half assed story doesn't hold water. The main campaign is set over the year between Return of the Jedi and the Empire's defeat on Jakku. There was no need for Iden to defect. The Aftermath books show the Empire was crippled but still strong after Endor. She could have been with the Empire right up till the end. After the Empire falls, she could simply realize she is on the wrong side and went out into the galaxy with Del. There is no need to join the New Republic, there are other options. She could have become a bounty hunter for example, she has the skills. They even set up a good enough reason to not be on the First Order side when Del is killed so helping the Resistance get the dreadnought plans in the DLC story still would have worked.
@thelonelypilot5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, like after Del was killed, she could have gone on the destroyer to kill Hask, and gotten the data as revenge against the First Order. And when she died, there would be a reason for her daughter to join the resistance.

As someone who’s played Battlefront 2 from launch, and still occasionally play it when a monthly update happens I agree with this video. When the game came out and about 5 months after I defended this game, I kept hoping better things would come! But I’ve pretty much given up. Time after time they screw us all over, barely any content or changes have happened in 10 months. Navin Singh problem I foresee with this game too is the lack of offline, the arcade is stale and boring, all of it is just “kill 200 AI on rails that are very bad” original battlefronts are still relevant because the AI and modes are fun on offline, the entire game that was online was also put in offline. At least with the second EA battlefront they let you play and see all the maps on offline, in the first game you can’t even do that.

If you could get past EA's bullshit practices and controversy about the game, i'm gonna be honest and say that it is actually fun to play, the graphics are awesome, the variety of game modes and ways to play make it a decent experience and a good improvement over the original Battlefront. It doesn't beat Pandemics Battlefront series in any way, but it stands out on its own as a fun game for star wars fans if you seek nothing else but serviceable Star Wars combat entertainment. But the controversy between this game and EA is what ruins its reputation on an otherwise cool game. If you want to blame someone, just blame EA for all the bullshit that is going on, not DICE. DICE is one of the best game developers back in the early 2000s and they did a good job on this game.

No, Walt Williams, that is NOT a very good reason. That's not even an okay reason. The story was awful, she didn't "have" to defect. Everyone wanted an imperial story, they marketed the campaign as an imperial story, and then 20 minutes in they have her defect. They lied, and their reasoning is garbage. Nevermind the writing, pacing, gameplay, and overall laziness of the campaign, it was just bad.
@talltroll70926 жыл бұрын
Having the defection be the ending of the single player campaign would have been a much better idea, I'm sure. They would have had the time to show initial total dedication to the Empire and its' ideals for the first few missions, with the team seeing and learning things over time that didn't jibe with the propaganda, leading to more and more questioning of their immediate objectives, and the Empire in general. Then, when the defectors finally came to the conclusion that they had been working for the bad guys, who had been lying to them and the rest of the Galaxy all along, it would have actually made sense, and not felt forced. Hell, you could even have a SECOND, follow up single player campaign in a DLC pack to flesh out content, and show other things after the film came out and spoilers were no longer an issue
@matthiuskoenig33786 жыл бұрын
or they could modifie the disney cannon to make it cooler (And more like the EU) by haveing an imperial civil war. they already have the imperials as 2 factions anyway (those that agree with the piece treaty which become a demilitarised empire and those that don't agree and become the 1st order). a much better story for a post revenge of the sith empire is what basically happens (initially) in the EU a lack of a clear heir leads to the imperial leadership fighting a civil war over power aswell as the imperial ideology fragmenting into a whole load of different ones. This would have been interesting as an imperial, especially if you got the chose to choose which imperial faction to support (with the exception of the faction that becomes the first order) and the character you play as should die fighting off the first order as it absorbs your imperial faction into itself. much cooler and no betrayal of imperial ideas (and more reaslistic asgenerally speaking people in that situation would prefure to make what they like better over switching sides completely)

Progression is no longer tied to the crate system, and hasn't been for a while. Microtransactions only give you cosmetics. Also, there are many creative ways to approach combat in Galactic Assault. It might be quite on rails for the most part, but several maps (such as Crait, Endor and even Kamino to an extent) do have multiple avenues of approach and aren't just cinematic set pieces. Other than that, yeah I agree with a good chunk of this.

I don't hear people talk about it much, but you hit it right on the head in this video. When players use *the exact same weapon* but the more experienced player gets a better version, that's game - breaking for me. Different weapons with different abilities, fine. But if we both use the same gun, it should be the same gun. And Dice has always had this differential where he who started grinding first wins. Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

16:32 You activated my trap card! "Go on for ages about racing games"! I'll try to keep this short, but I think there are a multitude of ways driving games can evolve. In terms of simulation, the next step is, after refining simulations, deciding properly when to and not to use it. Sometimes, simulation needs to not be the focus of the game or it goes badly wrong - the NFS Shift series is an example of trying too hard - but be too lax and you end up with horrible driving physics, like Gear Club. Also we need better stories. In fact, as of lately, we need almost any stories at all. The Crew's sequel dropped the narrative entirely, completely losing my money, Forza Horizon's campaign gets drearier as time goes by (at least the first one had characters), Grid 2 was the best of Codemasters storytelling, and then Autosport ditched it, too. We haven't even had a recent Driver game. The rest are essentially Forza Motorsport, Gran Turismo or 'realistic' portrayals of real championships, like F1 games or whichever rally game comes up next (also Gravel was a disaster). I'm so desperate, I'm writing a driving game storyline and character bios just to prove it can be done.
@foenixlord6 жыл бұрын
I stumble upon your critic and it brought me back some ideas about a concept for a racing game I had many years ago. I had downloaded the beta of a game called Blur made by Bizarre Creations (the studio behind what I consider to be the best racing series of all time: Project Gotham Racing). Blur was a kind of "real" Mario-kart-like; an online racing game with "real" cars (very arcade in physics though) that could use weapons. The game was fun but I didn't end up buying it. The graphical style was a bit off with too many neon lights and the gameplay too much "arcarde". The weapons were poorly thought with simply boosts and torpedoes. The worst were the tracks which were unimaginative and ugly. And yet, despite all those flaws, the game was still good to play. It made me think of what a true "real Mario-Kart" could be like. A game with real-life cars and their physics that uses "weapons" to gain (or make lose) advantages during the race. The classic banana skin from Mario Kart could be changed into various weapons that change the road (gravels, snow, ice) for a while; the shell could make a tire flat for some time, etc. Obviously, some tracks should change dynamically. But the main intention should remain that the player have to adapt his driving style realistically while trying to win the race. The Project Gotham Racing series found that perfect spot that no other driving game I've played ever touched where you had to "feel" the car. It would be an Urban Rally game with real cars and weapons. If you add some F1 team management to it (to make the menus more interesting lol), some good mods (like a Rocket League with real cars), some good musics and of course, a good story. I'm ready to help but I know nothing about making games.
@Ghiaman13346 жыл бұрын
@@foenixlord Wow, we'd be at loggerheads because I actually loved Blur when it came out, see it as the definitive 'real Mario-Kart' and, if I had the money, would buy the license to the name for games and make the sequel xD No, but, seriously, yeah, I understand what you're saying, but I think you end up either with a Wacky Racers style game but with real cars or you use big pieces of weaponry if you try for a 'real Mario-Kart', and I'm not keen on either of those options. The real weaponry idea leads too neatly to Carmageddon for my liking, and the other is... just the Mario Kart 8 Mercedes DLC. I can definitely see where you're coming from, though. It would be interesting to try that again, but, personally, I'd feel too sacreligious not just making Blur 2.

@Ghiaman13346 жыл бұрын
@@waking00one Can you explain? I don't share your opinion and I'd like to understand it. I honestly love driving stories: it makes replaying games like The Run or Driver: San Francisco more entertaining, personally, than games with superior handling like Project Gotham or Forza Motorsport. The grind to get better stuff isn't worth it if my point is to just get there. I, personally, need motivation. I had Forza Horizon 2 delete all its save data on my Xbox One due to some memory issue, and I was so unmotivated to replay it again that I stopped after the first showcase.

It's strange these days to see progression in competitive multiplayer games still involving increasing 'strength' and imbalancing the game for people who have played more. It *usually* flattens out after a period of time, but in the process it eliminates the progression. Looking at Overwatch, even with lootboxes, everyone is on an even playing field both in character power and access to characters. That should be the goal of any competitive multiplayer game. It's something that I wish was part of Battlefield V's design. I'm not sure what inspired a small but clearly gameplay-impacting talent tree for every weapon. Why discourage people from using all of the different weapons with the fact that they'll have to level them up?

Man, hearing that main score from Bad Company 2 when you described why Rush was so beloved still brings goosebumps. That game has one of the best soundtracks from 2010. Still fills me with that sense of foreboding and wonder as to what the scalar weapon was when you find it in the campaign.

How to fix the campaign: Vardos isn't the defecting point. It's the first tiny kernel of doubt in Iden's mind about the Empire. After Vardos, Inferno Squad continue to do covert missions, each one more dangerous than the last. There's a slowly growing sense of unease and reluctance in every member of the squad, but Iden is the one who convinces them to push on. At this point, her hatred of the Rebels and commitment to the Empire is what fuels her. These missions become less and less about Imperial stability, and more and more about simple fear tactics and sadistic consequences for anyone who even considers defying the Empire. After 5 or 6 missions post-Vardos, Del finally confronts Admiral Versio about the brutal and unnecessary tactics the Empire has taken to lately. In response to this glint of defiance, Admiral Versio has Del imprisoned in a maximum security detention center that's off the records because of its inhumane treatment of prisoners. Just to demonstrate his zero-tolerance for rebelling of any kind and make an example of potential defectors, Admiral Versio then reassigns Iden and Hask to that facility, specifically the wing in which Del is kept so they can see and hear his tortured agony. At this point, Admiral Versio has revealed himself for the unlikeable prick he is, and after much deliberation, Iden and Hask decide to break Del out. They cause a prison riot (reluctantly working with Rebel captives in the process) and are about to escape with Del when Versio himself stops their progress. Surrounded by stormtroopers, and the admiral preparing to order them executed, all seems lost for Inferno Squad when suddenly, a _LIGHTSABER_ flies through the air and cuts through the stormtroopers. the weapon arcs back and flies into the gloved hand of Luke Motherfucking Skywalker. This section has you alternating playing as Luke and each member of Inferno Squad, each one helping the other fight their way out. The mission culminates in a final duel between a vibroblade-wielding Garrick Versio and Iden using Luke's saber, the latter giving it to her with a warning to use it wisely, as it can be an instrument of death, or a symbol of hope. When Garrick is disarmed and at Iden's mercy, he asks that she kill him as he will be disgraced in the eyes of the Empire. Iden refuses to kill him, but she makes several precise strikes to his body that cut off his badges and insignia without harming him, bookending by saying to him "Now you are a disgrace only to yourself". It's later revealed that the captives Iden freed had activated a distress beacon that Skywalker had answered. It is right here, after the Rebels and Del have been rescued, after Inferno Squad defied the Empire, and after they were all saved by a Jedi Knight, that Iden, Hask, and Del decide.... to NOT join the Rebellion. As far as they're concerned, boths sides have caused them pain and suffering, and they want no part in any of it. They elect to take the _Corvus_ into the edges of the Unknown Regions where they won't be found and can lead a peaceful life. EPILOGUE: Garrick Versio is in a dark room, his arms and legs bound to a metal torture bed. In the shadows, a sneering and raspy voice whispers to him, "It is ironic, is it not? You dedicate your very life to an Empire sinking in a sea of stars and planets bubbling with defiance, and in the end, you are the only one to float while all else drowns around you". An indistinguishable form emerges from the corner, it's body seeming to gather the surrounding darkness towards it. It continues, "Make no mistake, Versio. Your daughter was correct in her evaluation of you, a disgrace. But...you are not entirely without use, however minuscule it may be". Versio manages to choke out the words "what do you want from me?". The figure at last steps into the light, and reveals itself as the unmistakable face of Supreme Leader Snoke. He snarls the words into Garrick's bloodied face: "Your daughter is of great importance to me. I want you to find her, and bring her to me. She will serve the First Order, or she will suffer". In spite of the malevolent monster's demands, Garrick's love for his daughter will not let him betray Iden to Snoke, regardless of what she did to him and his Empire. "Do your own dirty work, scum", he spits in Snoke's face. Snoke is unphased by this remark, and he simply states, "I intend to, Versio. But first, I believe both your use and my patience is at it's end now." With that, Snoke reaches out with the Force and without hesitation, implodes Garrick's skull into itself, spraying blood, skull fragments, and brain matter onto the leader's robe. Not seeming to notice this, Snoke activates a nearby holoprojector, and the flickering image of a black hooded figure comes into focus. Snoke utters these final words as we cut to credits: "Kylo Ren, I have an assignment for you...." Anyway, that's how I'D do it.

I do appreciate a calm take on this (especially this) game instead of constant mock without any real substance. And you're correct on almost all parts of the game. But still, I enjoy Battlefront 2 (2017) for what it is, because it has good stuff in it as well. It's a fun Star Wars experience. Hell, I even enjoyed the campaign even though it could've been better (and longer). I just wish developers were able to support the game with all their attention focused on it instead of the (what seems to be) skeleton crew still working on the additional content. People in charge of "Games as service" idea at EA don't seem to understand what it really means or fail hilariously on implementing it when there are many examples of successful titles that do just that out there and have been doing that for a while. Rainbow Six Siege immediately comes to mind, but, EA's own, Mass Effect 3 Multiplayer was a good example that they can make it right, mostly. People don't mind spending money on things they like be it cosmetics, loot boxes or additional content in the game that they already bought if it adds to the player experience.
