Matty, you mentioned Giger. Ridley Scott got a copy of Necronomicon (one of Giger's book, if I'm not mistaken, from dan o'bannon (one of the original script writers)and Ridley went crazy for it. Then, Ridley flies to HR Giger's house to talk to him, so he can get him to work on the movie. The whole alien design comes from the book itself pretty much. Giger himself made the Alien suit. And everything related to the alien planet, alien ship both outside and inside, the eggs, other than the facehugger, is all HR Giger. All of it. It's all his designs. And also, he was hands on with every single thing he design. Meaning, he wouldnt just draw something, he would make it all, mostly by himself when possible. Why the facehugger isnt his design? Cause the one he designed looked like a headless chicken, so they went with something else lol

Matty your take about the white 'blood' from Ash is spot on. I studied this film as part of my degree and there are a lot of academic writings about Alien. This scene is considered to represent part of the body horror of the movie and that it is 'that kind' of assault, also lots of 'pin-up' images on the walls of that part of the ship. Their are also female genitalia hidden in the set design of the alien ship to represent the birthing sequences in the movie, of which there are a few. Again this contributes to the body horror and fear of the other. These themes persist throughout the sequals as well. You should definitely check them out. Alien 3 is my favourite sequal.

Ash drinking the milky liquid in the science lab long before the revelation that he is an android.

22:08 So in Blade Runner the Humanoid robot Lore goes more in depth. There are ties between the Tyrell Corporation from Blade Runner and the Weyland Corporation from Alien. The 20th anniversary Alien DVD mentioned that Dallas, a character from Alien, received a paycheck from the Tyrell Corporation. The films share similar technology, especially in terms of the portrayal of artificial life. Thematic Connections: Ridley Scott, the director of both Alien and Blade Runner, has explored themes of humanity and artificial intelligence in both franchises. A movie that connects the two franchises, is the film Soldier, written by David Peoples, who was one of the screenwriters for Blade Runner. Soldier is considered a ‘sidequel’ or spiritual successor to Blade Runner and is said to be set in the same universe1. While Soldier is not directly related to the Alien franchise, its connection to Blade Runner and the shared elements between Blade Runner and Alien suggest a larger shared universe.

Matty, great call on associating the tech/sci-fi aesthetics of the movie with Starfield. BGS calls the style of Starfield "NASA-punk", and I think the more widely used term is "used future aesthetic." Very much inspired by 1960's thru 80's space-race/NASA tech used for inspiration at the time Alien was made in 1979.

There's 2 bad shots in Alien, both involving the alien itself. When the alien reaches out to grab the captain in the vents and the shot of the alien after getting sucked out into space. @sonicsean34 Yeah, I just wish they did something else instead of the jazz hands. Do a shot over Dallas's shoulder where we see the alien open its mouth or have the alien just move its head and neck outwards towards camera. Almost anything would have looked better than jazz hands lol. The last alien shot is a lot tougher. It needs to be lit well enough for us to see what's going on, but that much lighting with the camera so far back, we see everything which gives away the guy in a suit. Maybe having the actor do a different pose, something more animalistic, would have kept the illusion better. Much tougher shot though.
