For me, not showing Llewelyn dying was to reinforce that he wasn't a hero, so he wasn't deserving of a hero's death.

Knowing that Matty is a weeb, and now learning that he has an affinity for Westerns, I wonder if he would enjoy Seven Samurai.

You guys need to do Oldboy. The Park Chan-Wook version obvs. Matty would love all the twists and turns in the plot. And of course a certain hallway scene.

I think as Matty watches more movies he'll develop a greater appreciation and understanding of these movies. Sort of like how you can't have someone's first video game be BioShock or Red Dead redemption 2 it's just too much to take in I think movies are the same way. As someone who's watched close to 1500 movies I can definitely say that my taste have changed and matured and the more I watch and the more context that I have.

I was in 7th grade when Logan and Dunkirk came out in 2017. Thought they were mediocre. Years later I rewatched them both and consider them both 10/10 movies. Same with knights of the old republic and bioshock. Your right in this thought.

Really acclaimed movies, like those in the top of all time lists, are generally those movies that blow moviephiles away. Jumping straight into the greatest of all time when you are really new to movies, that will always be a tough ask. Many of them are great because they are unique, breaths of fresh air, or the whole group kind of being a genre of their own. I feel that the more movies you watch, the more you will appreciate these movies, both the ones you continue to watch, and these you are watching now. It will take some time, but that’s what we are here for. I’m with you for that journey. Tastes grow and mature with time and exposure. This is the same with all consumption

With this list tho i feel like they're pretty accessible films. These are like top level mainstream films but not really like 'cinephile' type films. I think he may actually be into those a bit more from his tastes so far.

As for the sheriff, he grew older, finally met his match, and realized that he'd lost his edge and did not belong in the game anymore. In the end, he knew Chigurh was inside that room, and he could've entered it and faced him, but he knew he was out of his depth and decided to just give up. He was old.
@Keyh

I think that it is less about "Oh, if they were younger and stronger and faster." And more that "Old men realize how little they have affected and lose their motivation to make good change." The world is improved by people that have the drive to make it a better place, and there are a lot of people that have given up on that.

Wow surprised how on point Matty's opinions have been in line with my own on film, impressive from a new cinephile haha. I agree with this one too, it's a great movie but i also don't LOVE it. Can't wait for him to get to some more artistic/sophisticated films and see what he thinks, i think he may vibe with some of them more.

I really like this discussion because it’s showing someone going through this interesting transition that hopefully everyone get to experience in there lives. When you go from watching a movie for entertainment to actually presiving a movie for what it is, a manifestation of the artiest desire to convey something to the viewer. In the case of this movie I think what the Cohans wanted to convey is the powerless of the individual against the never ending march of time and there own fate.

One of my favourite theories is that Llywelyn might have been intended as a sort of reality check of heroes in action movies. He's a complete bad ass (a Vietnam vet in the book) and does so many intelligent things and survives many unlikely situations and yet he still dies bloody, surprised and off screen, much like it goes in real life. It's a hell of a statement to say it doesn't matter who you are when you come up against certain odds/people in real life. Dark, but cool in my opinion. I also think Chig thinks of himself as a personification of fate or luck. Him getting hit by a car randomly shake his almost inhuman perspective of himself in my view, as does the brave lady not going along with his coin flip BS. I like to think that is the movie/worlds way of telling him that to real fate/luck, he is also insignificant. Over all this isn't my favourite movie but I do find it to be pretty great. It's one of the more philosophical movies I actually enjoy and every decade or so I watch it can come away with new small perspective changes.

Going to have to disagree on the protagonist shift. Llewellyn was never the protagonist, Ed was the whole time. It followed Llewellyn so you knew what was going on, but he didn't matter. He was just another case for Ed.

I feel like Matty's issue with pretentiousness or artsy-ness is bc he hasn't seen any good versions of it. If you think Tarantino is artsy then yeah, you haven't seen it done well 😂 If you're hyped for Stalker 2 then pls watch the film 'Stalker'...that is real art in film. That will make you confront your opinion on the matter.

Idk, it was so boring that I forgot about it. Everybody likes to talk about this movie but it's like. Meh. It's just another murder mystery or the opposite, rampage. When every movie and every tv show is the same thing. it gets boring. How many cop shows do we need how many cop movies do we need. Give me creative imaginative expansive story telling. not this one dimensional cop bad guy story nonsense. This kind of crap is exactly what drove me to anime. It's just so repetitive and boring. And the anime people like to hype up Monster, and it's like, it's just a murder mystery. it's so boring. give me something creative and imaginative, like made in abyss The golden compass was good, The hunger games was good, but murder mysteries are boring. I study psychology and probably jades me against cop shows.

Brother, you're entitled to an opinion, but hoooly. It's not a murder mystery... It's a coming of (old) age movie. It's okay that you don't like it. It's an unconventional movie. But it would be another thing if you understood it and didn't like it, here, I genuinely don't believe you understood it at all.
