Good performance by Djelo, who's probably put up a personal best there. However, it is not as good as a literal look at the form might suggest. It's been 16 starts since Protektorat ran right-handed. Although he's won that way around, the form is nothing like what he can do left handed... And Ginny's Destiny may well end up being the same. Previous 7 chase starts all left handed... Well beaten on the only time he's raced right handed both in National Hunt Flat races and over hurdles (latter also at Huntingdon). Of the other two runners, Nickle Back ran as though badly needing his first run of the season... And Minella Drama is probably best catching first time out and / or an Aintree specialist these days. Needs to race more prominently than he did today too. I think all the jockeys thought there was going to be more pace. Every runner (with the possible exception of the winner likes to lead or at least race prominently... And yet Nickle Back was given a pretty soft lead. As a result Protektorat also ending up taking a strong hold in rear. All in all, Djelo the only runner to produce anything like his best.

The running and riding of Protektorat was a disgrace. perfect going, 12lbs in hand on the field, never put in the race. Even if jumping right was not ideal, it didn't make up any ground on the flat. Skelton robbed the public .

Thing is Brian, although yes Protektorat is usually ridden more prominently than yesterday... He'd tracked the pace when winning the Ryanair and when running well in the Melling. Whereas Minella Drama, Nickle Back and Ginney's Destiny's recent best form have all been when making the running. ie racing futher forward than Protektorat... And although on form Djelo ran well at Exeter when held up, he didn't jump with as much fluency as he'd done when racing more prominently last season. So I wasn't surprised to see him further forward either. Fact is not every horse in the same race can race prominently. If trying to do so then they end up cutting each other's throats. Therefore - Protektorat being held up in last or second last position could only be expected in this particular race beforehand... And after the horse took a strong hold, Skelton's priority was to settle him as best he could. So it's not that he was "never put in the race", just that after being held up, taking a strong hold and racing right-handed, Protektorat / Skelton could never get into the race. Also, although Protektorat had an official rating 12 lbs better than Ginny's, he was also giving 6 lbs to that horse... And wasn't even top rated for this on Timeform ratings.

Was that the most cringe worthy interview you have ever heard. "Is it nice to have a flag bearer?" Where has this lad been the last 30 years???

Impressive perhaps but limitations exposed in three grade ones last season. Looks like a twilight horse, exceptional at grade 2 but unlikely at grade 1 unless weak field.
