Tight security seems to more naturally accepted and all around in Philippine malls. Guards consistently roaming around not just on entrances and when you enter a mall in the Philippines, no one bats an eye when guards require that they inspect your bags before you can enter because everybody knows it's for everyone's security. In America people would probably consider that a violation of someone's privacy rights.

​@@averymathieu Unfortunately most rent-a-cop that walk around malls in the US don't even have or aren't allowed to carry fire arms with them because property owners are scared of liability BS, they rely on cops that are near the mall to respond to situations. Guards with no fire arms feels like a guard dog with no teeth, all bark no bite. Mall guards that I saw in the Philippines are armed with light fire-arms even though there are also cops stationed at the entrances. This doesn't even include the guard on each of the stores on the mall. Yes, some stores in the PH malls have their own armed security guards just for their stores. Sometimes you can spot 2 mall guards roaming in pairs and 1 of them carrying a shotgun which I saw a couple when I went to MoA(Mall of Asia) last year. Someone needs to tell these guards to chill. 😄

I used to work in NJ. Many malls are closed by 5 pm on Sundays. I dozed one time because of tiredness and a guard approached and woke me up. I can't believe they look at you even while seated.

As a born U.S. citizen who built our home in the Philippines, the reason malls suck in America is due to crime, culture, lack of innovative retailers, labor cost, regulations, material cost, rents, short term mindset on returns to shareholders and a whole host of factors. Malls here are packed and stay away on the weekends. Also governmental agencies use the malls too. However, it’s a more dynamic and disciplined market without gang bangers and violent crime, compared to America. We are have security guards checking everyone entering and extremely friendly. Americans would be too obsessed with their alleged individual rights.

If anyone ever try those shop raids in the PH, they'd summarily get thrown to the ground by the security guards - they're fully vested in arresting someone even if they are not formal police officers. That's because security agencies are discretely owned/managed by ex generals of the PNP. It will take you months to get a bail hearing as well so good luck getting stuck in a jail cell with heaven knows who.

Nah, the main reason isn't such nebulous whatevers but simple urban planning. Most malls in the Philippines embed themselves into the public transport system. They are often either at bus stations, jeepney stops, train terminals, or in walkable spaces between some combination of the three. This is unlike the car-centric urban scheme found in the US and means that Philippine malls can always rely on a steady stream of commuters and foot traffic. This reliable supply of people has the knock-on effect of making it much more economical for malls to hire more guards, share and pool resources with public transport officials, make the interior design look more appealing to passers-by, innovate and experiment among sellers, etc. This approach also means that malls are often seen as a much less risky bet from the perspective of owners here in the Philippines than in the US and the culture and environment reflects that. Sellers are much more willing to open their purses so the mall is much more willing to open _their_ coffers; all because the average commuter is much more likely to impulse buy on his way to or from work as a result of smart urban planning.

Are there still malls in the US? When I moved to Houston in the mid-90s, there were countless malls all over the city. Now all of them were closed since years ago except the Galleria and a lot of store paces are closed. Americans have become anti-social, they don't seek human interactions anymore, they are content staying in their homes all day long where they don't even go out and talk to their neighbors.

All that you said were true! We moved here to one small city in South Carolina and my kids are terribly bored! Having lived in Dubai and the Philippines, we can only compare this small city to Dubai and Manila and sometimes we are asking ourselves if we made the right decision. It’s like we were already in 2024 and came back to 1980 here 😢. There is not a single modern mall, shops are scattered everywhere… walking is not a culture here, a car is a must and public transport is a no no, if it even exist! Oh how i miss Grab there and walking around. Customer service is also lacking… restaurants are dirty especially the toilets… heck even hospitals are not that tidy! And can I just say that prices are so high and everything is taxed and if you dine in a restaurant tipping is a must for non existing customer service! I am just looking forward to retire in the philippines one day…

As a Pilipino myself, malls in the Philippines are thriving just like the ones in Europe, and the Americans are dying because of its location. Our malls are very accessible by public transportation or private cars. Secondly it's very convenient it has almost all what you need to do, may it be doing some government transaction, going to a doctor or dentist, spa, or even have your dialysis, going to church or in some malls visiting a museum.

Zoning laws in the US doomed malls and even other businesses since they're located far from residential areas. When last we visited the US in 2001, we have drive way out just to get to where we can buy things. Here in the Philippines we have maximize every area since compared to the US, land area in the Philippines isn't that much. That's why malls and businesses are close to residential areas. Plus malls here have everything. There are shops, restaurants, even dental clinics and parlors. Security is also a thing in businesses here. Even 7-11 have guards.

One could come from the office and stop by a mall chapel to pray or attend mass before heading home. Events venues in malls can also be rented out for protestant church service and activities.

Been there last Feb with wife and baby and everything you said are definitely on goddamn point! Once you step inside the Mall back there, it feels really different. Like its alive. Here back home is like ghost town for the majority of the malls (Thanks Bezos). And not to mention every stores do have a lot of retail workers that will assist you right away, and with a big smile in their faces. Mall culture works in our country because there's nowhere else for people to go. Unless you're in manila, we have very few museums, very few good parks, almost no public libraries, almost no community centers, nowhere for people to go hang out without having to spend money. So where else would people go but to the mall?

The mindset of the Filipinos has changed. The way we interact socially has changed. Anyways there are still open parks you can free to roam for a minimal cost. But you have brave the humidity. La Mesa Eco Park and Quezon City Circle in QC. Rizal park, Luneta, Intramuros. The Roxas blvd baywalk. You coluld also visit Ayala Musuem in Makati or the National Museum in Manila. There are others being rehabilitated along the pasog river. All is not yet lost.

6:58 I mean, we have online stores here too like the very popular Lazada and Shopee in place of services like Amazon Prime, eBay, etc. It's convenient, sure but imo nothing beats going out of the house for a bit. I think it's more of our family-oriented bonding thing where we go out to places to just hang around at or just to get a quick bite at. It always feels like a treat to go out to malls here just to maybe get away from mundane things like work or school for a bit.

Mall operators in the PH are smart, you can see Green Hills figured things out early in the game. GH figured that inorder to compete & succeed they need to expand their indoor parking-lots and focus their investments on parking structures. it paid off. both customers and tenants are happy to come to Greenhills and their malls until today. soon after.. all mall developers made indoor parking structures a priority in developing malls in the Philippines.

My Aunt stayed here in the US for 20 years because of her kids here. When they went to college, she decided to come back to visit. Now, my family came here in the US in the early 2000’s, so we were kids. The malls back then were just standard malls. When my Aunt came back here in the US, she told us about how she went in mall where there was a church inside the mall. Like, you can go in at the crack of dawn, attend mass, go have breakfast in the mall, shop, go to a spa, have lunch, and dinner as well. They literally didn’t even the mall until the mall was about to close. 😂

It is sad to note that some malls in Metro Manila is better than some mall in some cities in the U.S.A. When in fact the the mall in Manila is located in a third world country like the Philippines. Customer service is amazing in malls. Trying to find something but it's not available in the shop? The employees will point you in the direction of their own competitors who might have. Trying to go to one place? Sure, no problem. Just ask the Guard or any other employee for that matter on where it is. Iloilo SM City has one of, if not the floor plans. There's a section of the mall for everything without you having to wander too far. There's a food hall in the second floor and food court in the underground if no one can decide on which place to eat. A tech floor dedicated to consoles, pc, smartphones and mobile carriers. There's so much planning going into it that if you're wealthy, you could even own a condo just across the parking lot of the mall. Not to mention how close other malls are like Festive Walk, and soon even Mega World.

For me I think America is moving more into the strip malls instead because of the high % of online shopping. Here in asia the malls are still a hang out place unlike in the US. I came from Michigan and malls there are kinda dead. Did most of shopping online or in Nordstrom rack, TJ maxx etc.. which are stand alone stores in the middle of nowhere

As an Architecture graduate, malls in Asia, South East Asia, especially Philippines the reason why malls here looks nothing like in the West, is to attract and make people feel comfortable and to "buy more" stuff... the more luxurious or fun and vibrant interior mall are the better to attracts more costumers... the dramatic lighting warm makes people comfy feel relaxed, the unwinding pathways like maze are way to make people browse more stores inside the mall that creates "spending more time" to shopping. And then Air-condition in the malls is intentional. the Philippines 🇵🇭 is a hot 🔥 and humid so its a way to escape the heat outside and it means people spend more money inside just to cool off. It's malls strategy to make more customers spend more money inside the mall here and creates more quality time. Family gatherings, Events, concerts, Government registration and etc gov. Related and even Church Mass are done inside this Malls its a more of a ALL IN ONE Destination that everybody can go too and afford.

the mall experience in the Middle east especially Dubai, SEA in Singapore and Philippines hits differently. they offer so much and the malls just pop with life plenty of visitors and workers happily interacting. Life is hard but we shouldn't lose the human connection.

Real estate development is now focused on creating communities in a specific location. Developers build buildings to house both residential and commercial units for businesses so that people can work in the area where they live. And the malls are built beautifully to cater to this community who will need to relax, dine, shop, go to church, the dentist, the doctor, the spa therapist or chiropractor, and meet with friends and family over the course of a week, on repeat. After a long work week, it’s nice to unwind at the mall that’s just a few paces away from where you live 😊 no stress from traffic.

We have a condo in the Magnolia Robinson beside a a mall. On regular days other than weekends, not a lot of people are in the mall. But on weekends the mall is full of people. I live in Maryland where the mall are slowly dying. The ones that are open are no match for the malls there in the Philippines. I agree what you're saying about malls. The humidity in the Philippines is a break for the humidity. Amazon Prime is also available in the Philippines

Online everything, theft and smash and grab issues, mediocre choices, unenthusiastic and sometimes rude staff, especially in the fast food industry, outdated if not dilapidated infrastructure, high rent, and just the overall sad, depressing, and destitute vibe are some reasons that keep people from going to malls in the US

I’m here in Los Angeles area watching your blog about malls in Metto Manila. I agree with you malls here in California are not as extravagant as you see there in BGC. It’s actually a variety of restaurants and stores in various malls out there. In BGC there are 7 malls and considering its not really a big city, and a few kms away is Makati and Ortigas where there are now more malls all over the adjacent cities from BGC. Filipinos love spending time in the mall because of lots of restaurant choices and everything you think of buying is available if you try to find it and satisfy your needs. I was born and raised in Manila and spent most of the weekends visiting various malls for grocery and shopping for things I need. I left the Philippines in year 2000 to join my Filipino-American husband. I terribly missed my previous life in Manila when I got here and raised our son and worked so hard to make a living and be able to sustain our daily expenses and pay our bills. It’s not enough if only one of us will make income. Everything is more expensive now, 24 years later. I just hope we can retire soon and go back to the Philippines, our pension could somehow be enough to make us live comfortably and spend the rest of our lives with our family there. You’re lucky you can make a living out of your blogging and enjoy a happy life there. More power to your channel.

This kind of mall design is actually an incorporated and vastly evolved version of our Sari-Sari stores which from the colonial times have been a staple of communities as your one-stop shop for every thing you may need. From the simplest salt to the more varied cleaning and hardware tools. Ive been to the states, some Euro and several Asian destinations. The way to shop over there is from shop to shop, so its basically going to a specific location to buy what you need, a shovel on a hardware, medicine on a drugstore, clothes on a clothes or tailor shop. A Sari-Sari store located just on a corner of a community is basically your 7-11 before there was a 7-11. Merge that two, cater to the big stores and you have Philippine malls. These concepts has already spread across SEA and for good reasons. The convenience and comfort rolled into one like shopping, dining, gaming or just idling with your pals beneath one roof on a one stop drive is really something.

As a Filipino who grew up in the capital, malls are nice. But they are just money sink that will induce you into consumerism. Went away from BGC, got a house and lot away from the capital, and it is the best decision yet. It is quiet, the air is fresh, and neighbors are more connected with each other. You are not yet bored because it is a new experience for you, but once you see the shallowness of it all, you will yearn a simple life in the suburbs. Just like how your ancestors did.

As a Filipino, theres a few reasons i can think of: 1. It's fun. You can go watch a movie, window shopping (Just look at things), go to church, gym, playground, ARCADES!! and for some reason its a common and culturally acceptable venue for a casual date since its pretty and air conditioned, this is specially true if youre still a student or younger. Sometimes there are celebrities or artists who do mall shows. There are some malls that hold events like Cosplays, fan meetups, graduation, defense exibition, job fairs, you name it. You can bump into friends, your crush, your ex or find your gf/bf on a date with someone else. Lol. 2. Covenience, you can find so many different services and products. You need 4 different things or services? you might just find them all in one mall. One thing I noticed in malls here in the middle east is thats theres a lack of variety of products and services. I dislike that i need to go to a specific shop someplace in the city since its not available in the mall. Its also a convenient transportation hub, so you can shop and not worry much about getting home. Public transportation in the Philippines is a nightmare. Nowadays there are government services available in some malls. 3. Air Conditioning, thaaaaaank gooooooodness for this. its a quick and easy way to get out of the heat and humidity or maybe dry off. It rains a lot in the Philippines so you can kill time in malls so you can ride your bike again, wait for the flooded streets to be passable or maybe get a coffee if youre drenched. 4. Lack of public parks. Theres a severe lack of green spaces and adequately maintained parks in the Philippines. So malls are generally prettier and way nicer alternative to hang out in or around with friends. 5. Culture, Its already a big part of our daily living. Its our go to place if we just dont know where to go or what to do. Its one of the most common meeting place for friends. As kids we feel so happy if our parents would bring us to the mall since theres so much fun to be had there.

A great thing about the humidity out there, your skin never dries out and feels really good. My son, who has eczema, doesn't suffer from all the dry and itchy skin whenever we vacation there. I have gotten used to the humidity, even though we only go back there every other year. The best months to go to the Philippines is in the end of October through February, maybe mid March. After that window, it is very hot and then the rains come in July through August. Yes, I love the malls out there in the Philippines. The vibe is different and the presence of multiple security guards in the stores and in the common areas makes for a great experience. It also helps that the homogenous crowd of shoppers respect one another 99% of the time and typically mind their own business. Customer service, you will not have a hard time finding someone willing to help you. Unlike the the US where it seems as if they are bothered when you approach them.

Mabuhay, Brian. I'm glad you enjoyed your experience here in the Philippines, examples are their malls. Malls here are like Parks and SM took the motto "We got it all for you" too seriously. As such, they have churches, fastfood, government facilities, hospitals/medical wards, arcades, department stores for clothes, shoes (Trivia: Did you know that SM stands for ShoeMart? Henry Sy founded the SM franchise here in the Philippines as a Shoe store but evolved into a much bigger mall platform.), and grocery/marketplace (they have a butchery, produce, fishmonger, and many more to sell for your convenience). Anyways, I hope you get to enjoy this Pearl of the Orient experience.

I live here in the US and is Filipino born. We have been to many, many malls. My family and myself, this is our favorite pass time. Texas, NY, LA. Nothing beats Filipino malls and my daughter agrees to! There is living energy in these places and are true one stop shop where you can do, shop and eat almost anything you can think of.

That is the beauty of Philippines it’s not only in Manila but in the provinces as well. I live in Bohol tagbilaran city, for twenty plus years and by the time I came back home for a holiday something inside of me to go back it’s already changed. I noticed PH malls no matter what day it is, there are lots of people which makes the mall more alive. In US bra, if you go Monday-Wednesday it feels like the mall is about to shut down hahahah.
