First time I've heard of GMR-1 protocol, do any other sats use it?

There are two competing standards, GMR-1 and GMR-2, it's basically GSM ported for use on satellites. They even use A5 encryption too. GMR-1 is used for Thuraya, and GMR-2 is used on Inmarsat, for their IsatPhone sat phones

To my knowledge, there is nothing publicly known in the SDR enthusiast space. It's too different from GMR-1 for Osmo-GMR to work. Of course, governments/spy agencies/law enforcement/military would have access to commercial-grade GMR-2 interceptors.
