Hi. No, it's not possible to use a HackRF or RTL-SDR for this. I have personally tried with a HackRF (It doesn't work) and the RTL-SDR doesn't have enough bandwidth to 'see' a LTE downlink signal. I have tried with both a BladeRF 2.0 and LimeSDR Mini 2.0, and they work fine. They both have a USB 3.0 interface, which I guess is needed to cope with the insanely high data rate of 1000 Layer2 frames per second in LTE. The HackRF is an old SDR, and it is kind of obsolete in the current day. And they are famously 'deaf' in their front-end. There are much better SDR options, nowadays.

Interesting! Haven't looked up or seen much on this before. Not the same exactly, but brings me back to some Kali-Linux days and wireshark, .CAP etc.. Allegedly, I was able to get internet for many years because of my very friendly neighbors! Christmas was extended that year haha ;) (I swear today, this ISP still uses the weakest passwords, and 10 years ago my 1gb GPU was able to crack some in 5-10 seconds with help! Insanity..)

So we still need a "key" to decode messages like SMS if the BTS tower uses A5/1 or A5/2 encryption?

@Bigbrain2525 Yes, that is correct. This video series was aimed more so at the usage of gr-gsm specifically, because I have covered the topic of A5/1 cracking previously. There are no publicly known decryption attacks against A5/2 at this time.

Using a software defined radio and gr-gsm/GSMEvil2 is superior for IMSI catching (in my opinion). Osmocom-bb seems to be unstable, and the calypso phone always loses synchronization with the base station, requiring constant relaunches of the software. Also, there are far better SDR options than the HackRF. If you just need to capture 850/900 MHz base station data, the RTL-SDR is orders of magnitude better than the HackRF for this purpose... Additionally, If you want to catch IMSI's on 1800/1900 MHz base stations, a Nooelec NESDR SMArt XTR is all that you need.

I don't even know where to start listing my antennas, I have that many of them! This video was made some time ago, I believe I was using a 25 element Yagi antenna (a whopping 3.3 meters long!), tuned for 477 MHz UHF CB here in Australia. It works really well in the 450-490 MHz commercial UHF range too. In total, I probably have more than 30-40 base station, land-mobile and handheld/portable antennas...

@WALL2WALLENTT Hi, and yes. This video will show you how to do exactly what you are describing. This is not simply writing a live image to a USB. The method I show in this video, the USB will act in the same manner as a proper native Linux installation on an internal SSD/HDD :)
