With the excitement still lingering around the Kokugikan from the New Year's Tournament, the place was filled with enthusiasm and mixed emotions on January 28 as former yokozuna Hakuho held his retirement ceremony. Many who came to the event were sad to see him officially retire, but they were also happy to celebrate his new departure. The ceremony drew international attention as distinguished guests from around the world attended the event to congratulate the former yokozuna's magnificent accomplishments as a rikishi and also offer encouragement on his new endeavor. As Hakuho bid farewell to his topknot which is a symbol of a professional rikishi, he pledged his utmost effort as a stablemaster Miyagino to raise the next superstar. He looks absolutely young and dandy with the new hairstyle! We have nothing but a respect for one of the all-time greats and wish him nothing but the best moving forward as a stablemaster. Thank you Hakuho and Go Miyagino oyakata!

Dear Hiro, your previous video has received more comments than any other, mostly due to the disappointment of the international fan community about NHK going after Jason’s sumo channel, one of the fondest ambassadors of sumo. I am sure you know some of the reasoning behind it, and for us international sumo fans it would be fantastic and maybe healing if you could chip in some background, provide some explanations, reply to some of the comments, or give any kind of feedback. We all love sumo, and personally I like your content a lot, but if you really want to grow a warm hearted community, I would love to see Jason receive some credit for his decade long dedication, invite him over, interview him, give him some tickets. You get my point. All the best to your channel. Great video!

Little advice for the jsa, make a way to easily view past basho in full ( at least top division) as a streaming service. You could charge like 5 USD or the equivalent and make a killing/grow and mend the relationship with the international sumo community. It's a win-win for you guys and us.

It is a landmark of sumo and the end of an era, a great champion that overcame pain and took on the challenges of a whole new world and changed it for everyone. He has started a new chapter, he is now father, master, teacher and mentor; that’s what the last 14 years were leading up to. A great rikishi, a great yokozuna, a great elder and a man that made history in a land he learned to love. Thank you, Hakuho and good luck!

I lived in Japan during the mid-1970s when Wajima, the veteran Yokozuna, and Kitanoumi, the youngest ever Yokozuna, were battling. I knew Kitanoumi would excel and he set many impressive records during his career. I was saddened by his untimely death and I am sure he would have been delighted to see Hakuho completely rewrite the record books and solidify his place as the greatest Yokozuna of all time. Well, at least Kitanoumi is still the youngest Yokozuna...although Hakuho's Miyagino stable has Ochiai -- youngest to reach Juryo and who knows what's next for the young man being tutored by the great Hakuho.

Whenever I saw those preposterous attacks of "dignity" and ad hominem directed at Hakuho to downplay his achievements and deny his status, it just made me think that Hakuho was just ahead of his time. Every thriving sport had this kind of huge transformation where norms undergo through major change. In basketball, dunking was once considered as "disrespectful", and in Go, another ancient game/mental sport, starting at the point 3-3 was also once a heretic idea. And these were not even combative sport like sumo. All these once "unthinkable" ideas are now common practices in their respective fields. This is inevitable in a evolving sport/cultural practice. All the "traditionalist" are ironically wrong in that all of their traditions were inventions and deviations at one point in history. (Before the 12th century, even certain punching techniques were allowed in sumo bouts. Yet, nowadays a legal move of slap would incite cry of dignity and a forearm blocking would be twisted as a elbow shot just to deny Hakuho's siccess. 😅) If sumo survives into modern times, one day people will inevitably come to understand that trying to win is the ultimate dignity, and it's a leading figure's duty to try everything to dominate as long as he can, redefining the sport in the process. Hakuho will be the trailblazer that future generations invoke out of retrospective respect. His achievement has made his precence inescapable. After all, he is the greatest of all time.
