Changes occur from time to time and history tells of how societies evolve over time. But some may not notice the changes.

2021 now...I hope this old mans situation had improved. He is so right. He longs for a Samoa that is no longer. Reminds me of my dear old father, so much wisdom, gifted by God.

I'm speechless. This grandpa is on-point with his view of how our society has changed big time. The role of aiga/family has been challenged and changed by the impact of Individualized thinking. This new way of living this Papa is talking about has a negative impact on our own society and who we are as Samoan people. The importance of relationships and connectedness was the focus of our aiga concept. We used to look after our families, children, parents, elders, villages and our country no matter where we live in this world. People of today may say this is a cycle of dependent living. I want to point out that this was the thing that separated us as Samoan people. We were known to be loving and caring people and our hospitality towards the world was evident through our daily practices. Where is this now? We can bring it all back. We can start by acknowledging that we have a problem. This Papa has said it all. We need to stop and think about who we truly are and what makes us unique. Caring for our parents, grandparents, great grandparents, great great grand parents and families in general was the priority of any Samoan person. Changes are good but if we lose our own values through these changes, then let's pause and realign ourselves. Stay true to who we are, our values, our belief in God and our actions towards people that matter the most to us, like our parents and so forth. Exodus 20:12(Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your GOD is giving you). Proverb 23:22: Listen to you father who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old. This is our way of living. God bless you all my Samoan brothers and sisters. VAAI SE MEATAUSAMI A SI TOEAINA MA SI LOOMATUA AE AUA E TE AI A OE IA MA LAU FANAU.

He's speaking true facts about life nowadays compared to how it was back in his days such a shame & so sad to hear that this is going on in Samoa hopefully the government will wise up and help the most needed such as those in Savaii especially the elderly almost sounds they are left behind and everyone's for themselves according to what I'm hearing. My heart goes out to this old man 95 and still going strong God bless you and your aiga..

This is sad and true. Many young people assume that all matai are rich and have people waiting on them hand and foot, but that's simply not true. Many are old and retired, living on social security and only have one person at their side doing the cleaning, cooking, running around, driving, yard work etc and that is their wife. It is a hard life. They have many obligations to uphold for your family. They have village, church and family obligations they have to deal with and represent your family through. Don't think your matai ain't struggling with you.

Hurts my ♡. Cell phones & movies are replacing tradition. The respect for the elderly is disappearing. But God will have the final say. I pray the youth wake up.

Dont blame the youth, the elders were here long before the kids and they voted their politicians into parliament and created the mess they are in. Now you want to blame the kids who came into the mess you made. Take some responsibility for your lives.

Poor grandpa. This is sad., and to be honest, these people, and many others worldwide, are not spiritually connected. Going to church doesn't mean that we are, unless we have God's love and treat our parents and others with respect, otherwise, we're wasting our time and God isn't pleased with us.

I never come across a samoan neglecting his parents or grandparents the way this elderly man is talking about. We samoan grew up adoring, love and support our elderlies in any ways. Shame on his children, there's a lot of samoan people want this opportunity to care for their parents/grandparents but they passed on. So sole, suga nothing is more important than your parents, that's how God will bless you and your family. Aua le naunau tane ae tausi matua.

I told my dad that in 10 years time China will own Samoa. few years ago. my dad said it'll never happen. trust me it will. Samoa will never improve. 100s years from now the culture will be extinct. can't blame anyone else but ourselves. we are so easy to manipulate.

That will never happen. Believe it or not Samoa is part of the Commonwealth of Nations. The commonwealth is a union with almost all of the nations including Samoa that were once part of the British empire. And luckily Samoa has close ties to Australia and New Zealand. Though I do hope The situation improves and a good leader helps Samoa end it’s problems.

Western way of living life has destroyed Samoan way :( Government should be ousted, Leadership should be returned back to the Matai's of each village. Young children should be schooled in their own Village's, using the Ministers wives as teachers(should a student show exceptional abilities move them onto higher education) thereby the young taught in their own villages will maintain the Samoan life & way of surviving without making the $$ priority, go back to where the elderly told stories to the young of Samoa History. Remove television from homes......(TELEVISION IS THE KILLER OF ALL MINDS). Everything Changed when Television Came into Samoa.

sad but true coming from this man and many elders. but at the same time he has it much better than the majority of people around the world at the moment. No suicide bombers etc, dont have to flee their homeland, no surprise tornado in the middle of the night, no cops gunning people down, no serious racist issues, no IRS, no donald trump lol, no invasion of privacy through anything electronic and no mcdonalds in every district or village to kill you.
