Makes sense why Bill was confused when Gideon mentioned "Stanford Pines" in episode 19 of season 1. And then the image of the Stans fighting and the tattoo showed up in his eye. He didn't know which Stan Gideon was referring to.

Stan's backstory is really sad , still in high school and thrown out of the house , no wonder he did some shady things and turned to a life of crime , he literally had no chance and was basically homeless for 10 years and then he lost his brother for another 30 years . That's why he's my favorite character, he's been through so much and still has a good heart

I always appreciate that Gravity Falls for the representation of twins. The twins in movies/tv shows mostly shown as creepy and exactly the same. As an identical twin when i watched Gravity Falls i was so happy bc i could relate so many things.

I knew a set of twins in high school who are MUCH more like Dipper and Mabel than any other set of twins. Maybe a close second to like zach and cody, but I feel like they're also a bit like the Pines Twins. A bit rambunctious, hearts of gold, and love adventure. I agree though, I much prefer this representation of twins vs you know...The Shining 😂

That last shot of this episode with Dipper going to sleep on one side of the room and Mabel staring up at the ceiling on the other side is the best shot in the series imo. It shows how much Mabel loves the relationship she has with her brother and, after hearing the story of her great-uncles falling out, is now haunted by the idea that it could happen to her too. While Dipper undoubtedly loves his sister, Mabel seems to value that relationship a bit more and needs him to be a central part of her life. The mirroring of Stan and Mabel with Ford and Dipper becomes clearer towards the end of the show, but can be seen here too. Even in this episode, Dipper’s questions are about the portal and mysteries, while Mabel asks how her two uncles lost their relationship. Just a subtle nod to what each twin tends to think about and is the most invested in. The relationships in this show is my favorite part about it. Hopefully you can somewhat see it too

it was actually hinted a lot that he had a twin throughout the previous episodes we just didnt notice :D -in the time traveler pig ep , when they went back in time there was a quick scene someone came out of the shack in the snow , and we all assumed it was a younger stan , but it was actually his brother -in the wax museum ep he was a bit shocked when he saw wax stan as he looked like his brother and he missed him so he kept him around and was very emotional when he was "murdered" -in the carpet diem episode , when he entered the room where the carpet was , there was a pair of eyegalsses he quickly took and put in his pocket , that was his brother's

I decided to keep the extras until after this episode for obvious reasons. There's a lot to cover. (don't worry, still spoiler free) 1. When Mcgucket fell into the portal, Alex Hirsch said he saw "the kids of places Bill Cipher likes to hang out." There's a hidden code in the journal that says he saw Bill "removing his exoskeleton in order to feed." eugh. 2. people theorized Stan had a secret twin YEARS before he actually showed up. All because the licence plate on Stan's car said stnlymbl. 3. The boat in Legend of the gobblewonker has "Stan o' war" painted on the side of it. Just in case you needed some emotional damage. 4. his explains why Stan got so emotional over his wax figure's death. All the way back in the 3RD episode! 5. In the time-traveler's pig, when the twins are traveling through time we see the shack during wintertime, and supposedly Stan peeking out. That was technically Ford's first appearance. 6. in dreamscaperers, in Stan's boxing match memory, you can see Ford in the background reading a book. 7. also note Ford is voiced by J. K Simmons. He can do no wrong :) See ya soon!

Important piece of context: there were months between the release of the previous episode and this one, so you can understand how amazing it was to have the series return on THIS big of a lore and character dump.

Man, this episode is always a treat. It's so easy to empathize with the Stan Brothers, and even though we don't get Stanford's full side of the story (with the more specifics to why he's scared popping up in later episodes) we can understand them. We understand the genius yearning to stand among the greats after giving up any hope of being normal by society's standards, up against threats that have him shaky and terrified and uncertain of his own mind. We understand the man whose life was sent tumbling downhill after one mistake as the tipping point, and the way he chooses to give everything he has for his family, no matter the situation. It's really impressive that what boils down to an exposition dump really doesn't feel like it at all! Really enjoyed this reaction! Keep it up. :)

I truly feel like this is one of the best episodes to give a HUGE backstory while remaining entirely interesting. Usually episodes like these can drop off about half way through, that's why I appreciate that it was 30 minutes, because they knew the exact amount of time they needed to tell a concise story that resonated. It's one of my favorite episodes for the story-telling aspect. It's just very concise. Thanks so much for watching :D

Yeeah, that abusive dad kicking Stan out and years later Stan about to call his brother but then hanging up when he answers is too real, it's really adult...on lighter note, "You think you have problems, I've got a mullet Stanford!" is my favourite line of the whole show, the delivery cracks me up every single time. :'D

This episode is great because it puts so many things from previous episodes in a totally different perspective: Stan's reaction to wax Stan's beheading, Stan's reaction to finding a pair of what we now know to be Ford's glasses in the room with the body-switching rug, why spending time with his family is so important to Stan in the Gobblewonker episode, etc.

I love this show so much it physically hurts. I would love to completely info dump about everything in this episode but that comment would be longer than the declaration of independence so all I wanna say is I SUPER recommended the journal when your done with the show. It's just so good and goes way into fords backstory and how fucking crazy he goes like oh my god he's literally insane . Also lots of Fiddleford content which is alway a good thing cause he's the best character in fiction of all time

dipper's real name is mason (not sure when we find that out, but I think it's in season one) so like the stan twins, they are the "ma' twins" (mason and mabel)

Dipper's real name is revealed in journal 3, not in the actual show

We never find out in the show. The writer did toy with the idea of Dipper revealing his real name to Ford in a later episode to show their bonding, but that never made it into the final episode. The name is only revealed in the real-life "Journal #3" book. First it's hinted at in Dipper's first entry, where he _starts_ writing a name starting with "M", only to cross it out and call himself "Dipper". Later in the book, when Ford resumes his entries, he recounts a scene very similar to what had _almost_ been included in the show, where Dipper reveals his real name to him.

Is there any more lore as to why they didn't go with it? I'm assuming he chose Dipper as his nickname due to his birthmark, so I'm sure I'm just looking for lore where there isn't, but just curious if there's any more to it haha

@@EversPrimeTime my guess, was cut for time. There isn't any "dead space" once the final starts (there is some after it ends; but if you wanted a high stakes "you can trust me, this is my real name" moment, there was no real room for it, and its not really needed.

But, basically what dipper says is that dipper is just a nickname but people got used to it and he feels like it's too late to go back now. He also says mason is "kind of a dumb name anyway." And tells grunkle Ford not to tell anyone. So yeah that's basically all we've got.

They actually named their children ‘Stanley’ and ‘Stanford’?!”* From the post-credits code: _A stubborn, tough New Jersey native,_ _Filbrick wasn't too creative._ _Having twins was not his plan,_ _So he just shrugged and named both 'Stan'._ What better way to say "Oops, we didn't expect twins" than to give both of them basically the same name? 4:58 - *“How did we not know that he had a brother this entire time?”* Suddenly his immediate, extreme attachment to a wax replica of himself in episode 1x03 takes on new meaning… See, it wasn't _entirely_ about Stan's massive narcissism! 😁 And when the Shapeshifter in episode 2x02 said about the author of the journals, "That six-fingered nerd _hasn't been himself_ for 30 years!", this is what he meant. 6:48 - *“Oh, he didn't do it on purpose!"”* Didn't he? Was he just _innocently_ strolling through the dark science fair hall of their school at night with nobody around, _by accident?_ You know, the way one does, when one has nothing underhanded at all planned. When he started working himself up and began screaming at the physical embodiment of Stanford's greater chances for a better life, did that just happen randomly without any meaning behind it? When he started getting violent by smashing his fist on the table, was that just an innocent slip and stumble and not at all the first stage to working himself up to a more direct attack? And _clearly_ covering up the machine with a drape and not saying a word to Stanford about it is just what any completely innocent person would do who was sincerely convinced that the machine was perfectly fine. Clearly. Let's face it, the only _accident_ in this affair was that the machine broke a couple seconds before Stan had sufficiently psyched himself up to smash it outright, thus scaring him off. He was there for one purpose only: to destroy the thing that offered his brother a better life than bumming around on a boat for the rest of their lives. 12:24 - *“Or is that a thing of, like, the 70s, or wherever they were.”* It's 1982 - almost exactly 30 years before the "present time" of the show, which is summer 2012. That's why the Calendar in the sealed-up room in episode 1x16 was from 1982 and why McGucket in 2x07 said that everything before 1982 was just a blur to him. Incidentally, if you check back in 1x16, when the boarded-up room with the carpet is discovered, you can see Stan picking up and hiding a pair of Ford's glasses, and later in the episode he is seen contemplating the glasses sadly for a moment. Those were "blink-and-you-miss-it" moments that meant nothing to us at the time, but become massively obvious and meaningful on re-watching. 14:40 - *“It wasn't a tattoo?!”* What? Grunkle Stan clearly _said_ that he doesn't have a tattoo - whyever would you not believe him? 😁 This is why I strongly recommended watching the shorts before delving into season 2. Of all the small nods that are strewn through the season (Like Octavia the cow in Stanford's book of anomalies, or the Shapeshifter changing into the Hide-Behind for a second), this is the biggest "Oh wow!" moment that one might completely miss, if one isn't primed for it by _Dipper's Guide to the Unexplained._ However, lest you get the impression that everything was perfectly pre-planned from the start, notice that the design for Stanford wasn't finalised until they started working on season 2, so he looks quite different from his first appearance in episode 1x09. They didn't know what he was ultimately going to look like, back then, so they drew him to be almost identical to Stanley, except for his signature glasses. This is also why Stanley's recollections of himself as a kid in 1x19 don't quite match up with his finalised backstory here. (Although, if you check out the boxing scene, that _is_ indeed meant to be Stanford sitting in the back with his face hidden by a magazine.) The writers did their very best to keep in mind everything they had established before and not contradict it, and conversely, they knew enough about where they eventually wanted to go with the story that they didn't haphazardly establish anything that would become a big problem later - but despite their amazing efforts at keeping continuity, some small things don't quite fit together perfectly.

​@@EversPrimeTime Great! As people usually point out when recommending Steven Universe, the show may feel a little slow in the first half of the first season, but it ramps up considerably. It also has an element of mystery where we learn more and more about events in the past as the show goes on.
