It was bout the late 90" and I was doing a fellowship at Bellevue Hospital in NY,I was already a music lover and a starting audiophile.I used to visit Sound by Singer frequently, one day ,the store was empty so i walked to the end of an aisle in a private listening room and there was a young men (you) who invites me to listening two equipment that he was setting at the moment, one with the Focal Utopia and in the other side of the room those very strange German speakers , which look like a hourglass (sorry don't remember the name right now),I stayed with you for almost 2 hours trying the equipment with the new Van Morrison album (Hymns of silence) , that experience with you at the moment change completely my view of the audiophile world, 30 years later of that visit and of my pair of Mini Utopias few months later, at last i can thank you very much ,for that KIND, beautiful and useful afternoon ,Thank you again....

Wow, great interview with Andrew. He has confirmed what has taken me 45 years as a audiophile to learn and that is, you don’t need to spend stupid money to have a great sounding audio system. You just have to listen to it and like it.

I bought a few smaller items from the old Sound by Singer - interconnects etc, some from The Gute. I went in with my friend who has a Brooklyn kosher catering business and was impressed with the no BS interaction he had with big Andy. Friend: "What about these speakers? Are they going to sound better than my Vandersteens?" Andy: "No, these aren't really going to sound better." Friend: "How much do I have to spend to get better?" Andy: "This speaker will sound better, it's $..." Friend: "Okay, let's hear this one..." He didn't end up buying a speaker, but bought a power amp, in great part because he got an honest interaction. They had some pretty good systems there. Always got decent treatment, which was not always the case with Lyric HiFi.

I'm from Serbia and back in 2014 I met mr.Singer when I was his guest on a couple of occasions. I was in NYC as a tourist and didn’t really intend to purchase anything from mr.Singer at the time and I told him that. But regardless of that he received me like we knew each other for years, showed me all his high end gear and we have a few very pleasent conversations in his shop. He even showed me "Save Serbia" poster in one of his showrooms. True audio expert, also history expert and overall very interesting person. Here in Serbia mr.Singer is a legend, we all remember two page ads in every issue of Stereophile. Meeting mr. Singer was a great experinece for me. Steve, your channel is the best, just keep up the good work. Best regards to both of you. Dragan Ilic

I bought my first upgraded equipment from “Sound by Singer” and a bunch of records starting at their 33rd Street original location (I think) and later when they moved to Union Square area. I still use the Krell KST 100 I purchased there on “sale”…. The sales staff were great. I do not remember Steve though I must have had some interaction..have to check my sales slips! Always open to kibbetz and play anything in the listening rooms. Wonderful atmosphere.. Andy could be snarky, very dry sense of humor. I recall talking to a sales guy and Andy was sitting nearby. I mentioned my Luxman integrated (tubed pre amp section). Andy interjected “nice little amp, I have one in my bathroom” Great memories!

Hey Steve, Dave here. I thoroughly enjoyed your conversation with Andy. Boy, did it bring back memories! I was a customer of Andy's when you started working for him (and remember you well). He was in his 2nd floor walk-up at the time if I remember correctly. I also remember Andy Regan well but I do have a question: There was another guy that worked there that I did business with & became very friendly with - young guy with curly hair - nice guy - but I can't for the life of me remember his name. I very much agree with Mr. singers thoughts on Tube Phono stages but more so with the sense of tubes in general in that I've had tube gear and it sounds fantastic but at the same time I always have this thought when I'm listening to it in the back of my mind about whether or not it could be better or is there something wrong with my tubes or maybe I should change them out or this or that and it ultimately becomes an exercise in frustration and constant worry for me as to the tubes themselves and how they're affecting the sound which is why I love tubes overall but I am a solid state guy through and through for that reason.

Interesting comments about audio and Home Cinema, digital and analogue. I still owning my LP12 I bought in 1983 and been through a reasonable amount of equipment over the last 40 years I am very interested to see where Home Cinema goes. I currently use 2 channels of a home cinema set up with subs for 2 channel and do believe that the complication of the object based audio and over processing for flat responses is not necessarily the best route. Indeed I sold my high end processor an American Acurus ACT4 and went back to using analogue out and a now modified naim processor as an 8 channel pre amp. Personally the nirvana of one system that does justice to 2 channel and multichannel I still think is possible, however I think its improbable this now ever happens. Looking around at fundamentals of good audio I also do believe spending time making sure you avoid poor mains installations, unsuitable equipment racks and RFI especially in digital become necessary when you move into the higher end. That does not mean buying an expensive mains cable though !

I had to come back to this: "Nobody likes to pay for labor" Learn to like it. Learn or relearn to respect human labor no matter what the job is. Respect the person, respect their labor and they in turn will be motivated to respect their own job and most crucially themselves. I don't care how 'menial' a job is, if done well it deserves respect. Respect for effort should be universal. It is the ownership class who hates to pay for labor more than anyone and they have created a science to explain and justify it. It's called Economics which does not even recognize any 'value' to labor at all.

you need to have solid-state for phono stage at least in the first stage, too much noise will be amplitude from valves, you want 105 db noise floor plus for phono stage at least in the first stage plus it gives you an increase in dynamic range as much as a CD. I tell you why it's an ethos that companies have to make big prophets in America, otherwise they think they are a failure that is the downfall of American products. there must be some small independence in America make a good living and a good product but doesn't seem to be known!
