I'm from Serbia and back in 2014 I met mr.Singer when I was his guest on a couple of occasions. I was in NYC as a tourist and didn’t really intend to purchase anything from mr.Singer at the time and I told him that. But regardless of that he received me like we knew each other for years, showed me all his high end gear and we have a few very pleasent conversations in his shop. He even showed me "Save Serbia" poster in one of his showrooms. True audio expert, also history expert and overall very interesting person. Here in Serbia mr.Singer is a legend, we all remember two page ads in every issue of Stereophile. Meeting mr. Singer was a great experinece for me. Steve, your channel is the best, just keep up the good work. Best regards to both of you. Dragan Ilic

There have been several important eras in the history of audio. The vacuum tube, the transistor, the Integrated Circuit, Mono era and their big speakers, Stereo and the development of the Acoustic Suspension Principle, the post Vietnam War boom when Servicemen returned from Asia with cheaper transistor based audio gear, etc. etc. It becomes very important that interviews like this become part of the historical anthologies of Audio in America, documenting important figures in the business whether they be commercial personalities or audio engineers with their sound breaking innovations, to document the history of this part of Audio. Much has been lost in previous ages because productions like these were never created and archived for audio history. Some have but not like this. Arthur C. Clarke predicted long ago of a future age where everyone would have access to their personal TV productions making video available to more people world wide. We are here now. That makes interviews like this so very important because we are now saving the History of Audio in a new and important way. THAT makes this interview so important. Thanks Steve for your work in creating historically important interviews and information to the culture and technology of audio in America. Steve you always comment that your “work here is done” but I say your work is “ongoing” and adding to the wealth of information you and several others like you are doing for audio reproduction. Bravo 👏🏻

I love Andy. The funniest thing he said to me (when I told him I was going up to The Audiophile Society meeting at Hy Kachalsky's to hear a Dan D'Agostino presentation): "I don't like audiophiles. But I like you, Mark." One time I even got invited to go out drinking with Andy and the staff. Somehow the subject of "worst drinks" came up. Andy declared that Long Island Iced Tea was probably the nastiest drink ever created. I'd never heard of it, so that's what I ordered. Big mistake. I don't remember making it back to my apartment that night, and I was in pretty bad shape the next day.

You should try a Black Opal... basically a Long Island Iced Tea with Chambord. Delightful if the bartender knows how to make them correctly (which is rare, in my experience). We have a local bartender (Salem, Oregon) who is obsessed with music and has been mixing drinks for 40+ years. He makes his own drink recipes and infusions, and most often names the drinks after musical groups and specific songs, particularly the Beatles. His 'Crown of Thorns' drink is unbelievable (it involves grapefruit juice, Crown Royal, and clove-infused sugar for the glass edge (i.e. the crown of 'thorns'))... one of the best things I have tasted. Period. www.statesmanjournal.com/story/life/2015/08/10/barflies-meet-rob-melton-table-five/31426861/

A dying breed is right. I miss the days of "pure audio," when video was in its infancy and all you wanted was the best hifi system you could afford. Video didn't totally kill basic two-channel audio but it did throw it on a consumer back-channel and kept it there.

What most impresses me about you guys is the JOY of living you have !!! Music and hi-fi is the catalyst, but not all audiophiles have this joy. Wonderful to see this. Joy is always possible. Turn off socialist MSM news, spend less time looking at screens, minimise fast food SAD diet, spend more time in nature, learn to meditate, listen to great music (you already do that)... Joy is the natural normal human state, if you are not frequently feeling it, eliminate the root causes.

Just a perfect interview for anyone who knew audio in the 70's. Never tire of hearing the two of you. Thanks for doing these. Oh, ask Andy what system he'd suggest to a customer these days...is a $5000 budget beneath his target customer? What's his minimalist budget for a customer these days? He (and you) had great influence over what other dealers around the country chose to take on back in the day! More than you may know. Again, thanks for these interviews - Andy, Herb, others.

Thoroughly enjoyed this Steve. My birth year is 1952. Started Hifi around Tampa FL at about age 20. Sansui/Garrard/JBL 2-way bookshelves. Later Dynaco/Hafler kits Thorens TD160C/Shure V15-III. Read Stereo Review, just listened and learned songs with my friends. All along I've drooled, and appreciated the others' pursuit of their own idea(s) of perfection. I don't think I missed any of the fun though. Finally back in it recently and wow, have things gotten better! Fantastic 2-part interview with your friend Andy Singer. It might have been interesting back in the 70s and 80s, but it's gotten too expensive, I might even say exorbitantly so, and none of the "average-income" guys can afford it any more. I often put the question forward to reviewers, "Is it only the rich that have good ears?" Please tell me, as I've never seen it written in science that your appreciation for good sound was based on monetary income. Where are the David Haflers of the present?

them mentioning; Linn Acoustic Research Acoustat ... that's the hifi experience that launched me on my audio journey. The scene of hifi gear and sales in that era, is powerfully etched in my memory... my formidable years. In my late teens, I could appreciate dudes like Steve and Andy, selling and playing with this gear all day long, I spent a great deal of my free time listening to all the systems I could. That included talking my way into hear recording studio mains in multiple studios... then a few years later I'm right there, in studio with one of the early acts I worked with! I couldn't get enough... 40yrs later, I find myself in the same situation, I still can't.

Wow!!! What an enjoyable interview with the one and only Andy Singer. He’s always been a trail blazer in the world of high end audio IMO. Just look at the array of brands he carries….certainly not your usual collection of stuff coveted by the majority of audiophiles…..now that’s knowledge and oodles of confidence to be able to successfully survive in one of the best audiophile markets in the world. I was also delighted to hear Andy pay a quick homage to Linn, who seems to get little US distribution, respect or media coverage these days. Sad but true. So glad to hear that Herb is working on a forthcoming LP12 review. Sure wish a reviewer of prominence would review their other current gear (streamers and amps). It’s still great stuff? Thanks Steve and Andy. Very well done!!

Revisiting the "Sound by Singer" interview. My definition of a true "audiophile": To me an "Audiophile" is a person in love with Music, and the gear to accurately (as possible) reproduce it from final sources. I say final sources as any given recording goes through a number of processing stages before it it is released to the public for purchase in either analog, or digital formats. Bottom line: you will never experience what a given recording sounds like in the studio. The limits are acoustics of the control room, and of the audiophiles' own venue. I admire any effort to maximize this final experience, in some cases, even taking on the task of building His/Her electronics, or speakers. Judging quality solely by price is not a particularly accurate evaluation of performance.

I started selling audio at the same time - '74-75. I was selling mid-fi (Pioneer, Marantz, Infinity, JBL, Sony, Phase Linear, etc.) but hung out at the high-end shops. I earned my money selling mid-fi and spent my money buying hi-fi. I was a Junior in college and had Threshold, Magnaplanar, Magnum, M&K, Micro Seiki, Ortofon, etc. I worked in a shop that had constant traffic, but the hi-fi shops would go all day without anyone walking in.

Talking about passion: A new, but experienced rep came in who previously came from a high-end store stopped in to introduce himself. (Just a few weeks ago) After we talked for a few minutes, he said "It's refreshing to meet a salesman with an actual passion for this stuff, I go into so many stores where they're all just going through the motions". I like that. I think me and Andy would get along though, I'm a straight shooter as well, and I know most of my customers appreciate the candor as well.

Hmm, Never once in my mind does my personal sales commission factor into my recommendations. My #1 goal is to pair the customer up with the best audio product for them, for their budget. I Agree! I am my own best customer as well!! I don't need to win over and hypnotize my high end friends with whatever equipment I may have had at the time! I design and built loudspeakers purely for my own enjoyment! I bought some kick ass high end Chinese Class A Stuff, right at the beginning of the Pandemic, when it was very hard for Chinese manufacturers to get anything out of the country! So, I purchased a Mark Levinson Dual Mono Class A ML-.2 25 wpc power amp that has upper crust parts in it! More Euro/Japanese parts than the Ultra Expensive American/European stuff that has really cheap retail Chinese parts in them! ( I always look under the hood!) I just happened to strike at the right time! I also picked up a Yaqin top load ultra high quality CD player with 6SN7's in the tube output circuit.Hihh quality op amps in the solid state circuit. Also, I bought a Mark Levinson JC-2 clone preamp ( dual mono, class A ). I was surprised, and impressed that I only spent like $1,100 or 1,200 for all three of those pieces! ( American, European western Audio stuff at that build quality would be in the $20,000 range! Not kidding! This New Chinese stuff is Impressive!

20:58 the hierarchy was a load of rubbish but what do you expect from a company that stole it's design? Better to think of a system as a race car where you try to improve the weak link/ bottleneck (Driver? Tyres? Engine? Chassis?). 9 out of 10 times it's the speakers.

Have you ever had any customers who were so happy with what they had that they never wanted to change anything? It seems to me audiophiles I've encountered have gone through so much equipment looking for magic bullets that they never stop hunting for something better. I have no idea what they are looking for but somehow they never seem entirely satisfied. Is that generally true or is it just my imagination?

As an audiophile who’s gone through a lot of gear, I’m not looking for a magic bullet, it’s just a lot of fun trying out new gear. Sometimes it’s better sometimes it’s not.

@@jeffmpvd7689 I am really happy for you. Once you have what you want you can forget about equipment and just enjoy your tecordings. It seems rare among audiophiles. I think audiophiles buy recordings to listen to equipment while music lovers buy equipment to listen to recordings. As a lover of classical music and jazz and an engineer I realized a long time ago, 48 years in fact that the only way I would ever be happy was to invent my own. I love solving problems as much as I love music. So I got the best of both.

Hi Mark…I totally agree with you. Way too many audiophiles chase the holy grail, spend gobs of money and sadly never find it. And when they do, it never seems to last very long. I am with you….buy good stuff and keep it until it can’t be fixed and focus on the never ending world of music (with special thanks to the streaming service of choice) and life enhancement. You nailed this one but we are in the minority. No biggie. To each their own.

@@Michael-xz1nk Watching the audio sites these days gets me to relive my early days as an audiophile from the time I first heard stereo and loved it when I was 12 years old until the day I first heard quadraphonic sound and hated it when I was 25 years old. Quadraphonic sound was hyped to the skies as the ultimate. Why did it die? Because it was a failure. 5 channel HT is son of quadraphonic sound with a mono speaker in the middle and possibly a subwoofer or two. The intention was good, the method was naive. Two channel stereo just didn't cut it for me anymore. By this time I was a degreed engineer with a lot of powerful analytical tools. This allowed me to figure out how sound, acoustics and hearing actually work and engineer my own solution to what is a very complicated problem. I've never looked back. The sound system which is one of many in my house, the only one I listen to anymore was first assembled in 2002. It changed a little in 2008 with an upgrade costing about $100. It will never change again unless something in it fails and can't be repaired or replaced. BTW it was not expensive by audiophile standards to build.
