Like many others I am not a romcom-type-person. There are only a few exceptions in this genre. And Notting Hill is probably the highest on my list of exceptions. I cannot resist watching it to the end anytime I trip over it while zapping through the channels. And because of that movie, there is no way I can listen to this Bill Withers song without seeing the scene in which the main character walks down Portobello Road market while the seasons change over the course of this song. Just brilliant cinema.

The drummer with the goofy grin on his face is the immortal James Gadson, session drummer extraordinare. The man has played on -- quite literally -- about a third of the music to come out of the LA scene between the late 1960s and 1970s. He was only surpassed by the late, great Jeff Porcaro (a member of the group Toto) when it came to being in the most recordings as a drummer.

The part where Withers repeats "I know, I know," has become a very recognizable piece of the song, but it wasn't what he had in mind. "I wasn't going to do that, then Booker T. said, 'No, leave it like that.' I was going to write something there, but there was a general consensus in the studio. It was an interesting thing because I've got all these guys that were already established, and I was working in the factory at the time. Graham Nash was sitting right in front of me, just offering his support. Stephen Stills was playing and there was Booker T. and Al Jackson and Donald Dunn - all of the MGs except Steve Cropper. They were all these people with all this experience and all these reputations, and I was this factory worker just sort of puttering around. So when their general feeling was, 'Leave it like that,' I left it like that."

Lean on Me - Use Me - Lovely day - Just The Two Of Us - I Can't Write Left Handed. Probably the most underrated singer/songwriter ever, probably because he had too much integrity for the music business, and quit instead of towing the company line. He passed recently, a happy family man, but not nearly rewarded for all that he contributed to millions of fans.

Yes, your community is right on! Bill Withers served in the U.S. Navy for 9 years and went back to civilian life in 1965. As a child, he had a severe stutter and had a hard time fitting in. I had the great fortune to run into him a few times in West Germany (before the wall came down). Bill was always a sweet soul, giving other musicians a chance to perform on stage with him (usually in smaller venues). My favorite is "Grandma's Hands". Suggestion: check out Billy Preston, "Will it go round in circles", or "Love the one you're with". The '60s, '70s, and '80s are filled with amazing and talented musicians! I hold firm that the BEST way to experience these artists was at a "Live" performance. I've seen many of them up close & personal (basement, garage, backyard, small clubs, and on a rare occasion, in-studio). Billy Preston was what I called a "Keyboard Gypsy". Billy Preston traveled year-round. England, New York, Los Angeles (mostly studio work laying down tracks) and I don't think he ever turned down a chance to sit in (play) with any other band. He went on tour with our band for 3 months at one time. I remember how Billy Preston's face lit up with joy when the doorbell rang during an impromptu jam session at his house and they delivered his brand new MOOG synthesizer "Minimoog Model D". Needless to say he spent the rest of the session experimenting with it. I miss those days!

The version played on the radio, the studio version from 1971, was a little longer. Like other people here are saying, his best-selling, best known song was "Lean On Me" from 1972, which you've probably heard before. "Use Me" (1972) was his second biggest hit, "Grandma's Hands" (1972) might bring tears to your eyes, and "Lovely Day" (1977) will make you smile. He also had a huge hit in 1981 dueting with Grover Washington, Jr., on "Just the Two of Us."
