This song is about obsession. One person being obsessed with someone else, in not necessarily a healthy way. So, he's watching her...he's suspicious but at the same time he loves her. There's darkness here but also strong passion and desire. It's a brilliant song!

Some call love obsession and some call obsession love. One man's junk is another man's treasure. Isn't that how it goes? Or maybe love has nothing to do with feelings. Perhaps it is all about actions, that you've committed to and follow through to do. And in retrospect you see it was there, love, in the actions spread out over time.

I love the stalker's national anthem. In a 1983 interview with the New Musical Express, Sting explained: "I think it's a nasty little song, really rather evil. It's about jealousy and surveillance and ownership." Regarding the common misinterpretation of the song, he added: "I think the ambiguity is intrinsic in the song however you treat it because the words are so sadistic. On one level, it's a nice long song with the classic relative minor chords, and underneath there's this distasteful character talking about watching every move. I enjoy that ambiguity.

Most people know what the lyrics are, seems silly to question that, and to be honest, It really doesn’t matter. Like all music, which is an art form. You can interpret it any way you like. Just because it’s a dark and sinister song about obsession and stalking, doesn’t mean that it HAS to be that everytime you listen to it. There’s a beauty there in the music. People play the song because of the beautiful melodies that are very romantic in a way. The music doesn’t match the lyrics here. For example, Torture by The Jacksons is a very sinister song lyrically and musically, it matches. The song is not uplifting at all. This song has the opposite effect here, the lyrics are about something unhealthy but the music is beautiful. People play the song because it’s simply a beautiful piece of music. And at a wedding, people will play beautiful music regardless of the message of the lyrics.

It's been in multiple movies and been covered by so many artists, I couldn't even give you a count. Even huge singers like Phil Collins and Annie Lennox have covers of this song. That's how overwhelming popular it was in the 80's. It's been featured in Stranger Things twice already, too. Lol :) The lyrics to this song came to Sting in a dream. It's a song about a stalker. Sting, the lead singer of the Police said it came to him in a dream, if I recall correctly. My uncle and I were watching MTV the day this song debuted...and we both knew instantly that it was about a stalker, but it was incredible how many people played it at their wedding thinking it was a love song.
@stevejamo19583 жыл бұрын
“I think it’s a nasty little song, really rather evil. It’s about jealousy and surveillance and ownership,” Sting said in 1983. The Police frontman was speaking during a sold-out arena tour of the US. Thanks to the “nasty little song”, which had just spent two months at the top of the Billboard singles chart, the trio were acclaimed as the world’s biggest band. They were also on the verge of breaking up. Taken from the Financial Times in 2018.

This song is from the 1983 lp "Synchronicity", which was The Police's 5th and final studio album. It was voted "Album of the Year" by Rolling Stone readers and was voted the fifth best album of 1983 in The Village Voice's year-end Pazz & Jop critics' poll. At the 1984 Grammy Awards ceremony, "Synchronicity" won the award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was nominated for Album of the Year. "Every Breath You Take" won the awards for Song of the Year and Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, and received a nomination for Record of the Year. In essence, had it not been for Michael Jackson's "Thriller" album (not to take anything away from "Thriller" because that was a terrific album in itself and deserved every accolade it got), "Synchronicity" most likely would've walked off with most of the Grammy Awards that year! It was that good!!

Sting wrote the song when the band were down on the Island of Montserrat recording the album Synchronicity, he was going thru a divorce from his 1st wife & in pain. He was surprised by how people saw it as a love song, years later he said he can hear the sadness in it & understands how some could see it as that. The Police were named by the drummer/founder Stewart Copeland who said he used to get that nervous feeling whenever he was driving & saw a police car in his rearview mirror & thought it would be a good name for a band

They originally had more of a Punk-ish sound, but with style. Try a few classics from their first album: Next to You So Lonely Roxanne Canary in a Coal Mine Can't Stand Losing You These are from 1978... no MTV, and only small radio stations, like college radio, played them and the other "New Wave" groundbreakers. Long before "Stalker" was a part of our Lexicon, The Police wrote this little ditty. We all thought it was a love song (#1 hit song at that). But, it is actually a Stalkers's theme song. The Police were surprised by our (the public's) reaction. Once, I found out the intent and Stalkers became REAL, I find I enjoy it less ...doesn't mean I don't sing along, just that the intent is all I can think of now!

The Police is one of the best bands ever..They had a 7 year reign. At the height of their enormous popularity, they toured for Synchronicity. They played Shea Stadium and announced it was their last show. They literally walked out on top. Surely you've heard of the lead guy Sting? They were a three man band, excellent musicians, Sting on bass, Andy Summers on guitar, and Stuart Copeland, one of the greatest drummers of all time. The song is simple, though often mistaken for a love song. It is about obsession, stalking.
@edwinatakasaki22582 жыл бұрын
When Sting first got into movies - "Brimstone & Treacle" - he and The Police contributed quite a lot of songs to that soundtrack; another leading UK group of the late 70s/early 80s, Squeeze, contributed one of their most popular songs "Up the Junction" to the soundtrack. The two songwriters of Squeeze - Difford/Tillbrook - were considered the Lennon/McCartney of their time. Any song by Squeeze is worth looking into, "Black Coffee in Bed" had heavy rotation on MTV.

One reason it may sound so familiar is that Puff Daddy sampled it for "I'll Be Missing You." I think The Police went with their name mainly because it was slightly disturbing. And in fact most of their earlier songs were intentionally disturbing. "Roxanne" is about a lonely guy trying to reform a prostitute mainly so he can have her all to himself. "Don't Stand So Close to Me" is about a teacher struggling with his sexual attraction to an underage female student. "Synchronicity II" compares a frustrated father and office worker as something dangerous like the Loch Ness Monster. "Every Step You Take" is also intentionally creepy, as it's basically a stalker song. As The Police became more famous, the lead singer Sting was actually bothered by how many couples kept telling him that this was "their" song, as he felt they were seriously misunderstanding the meaning by thinking it was romantic. So he released another song called "If You Love Somebody, Set Them Free" as way of saying "Noooooo! 'Every Breath' is not relationship advice!"
