its still dangerous though because then the car in front of them experiences the same issue you just did and you're still at risk of crashing especially if the randomly break because they didn't notice they had to stop until last minute.

Love the situational awareness. Try to always be aware of other drivers around you so you can act, not react. But noticed no downshift when coming to a stop? Or did I see that wrong?

The increase of people on their phones is insane, I check and it's literally almost every other person. I was in a taxi and on two occasions my driver (I regularly drove with him) almost crashed because he was on his phone. I had to tell him he was about to hit a tree at 60mph.

That was some of the best advice ive heard taught. Braking early is exactly what you need to do. Sometimes you have to drive for other drivers.

Idk about the UK, but in America we (or at least I) was taught up to essentially ignore them. Almost any rearending finds the back driver at fault and you're likely to get a decent payout from it to fix the car or even replace it if it's so bad (hence why brake check scams exist)

@@Jared_Is_Near That's moreso a problem of our willingness to hand any pair of braincells a driver's permit. That I won't defend, definitely too many loons. Being able to not worry about the poor decisions of the people around you, though, helps you stay focused on your own driving and the road ahead of you. And if it's their fault for the problem, why should you be forced to worry or pay?

@@purplemonkeyelephant In an ideal world where the US didn't grant lumps of meat the ability to drive, I'm sure we'd be different. I'd say it's alot safer for you to worry about your own driving than someone behind you, though. If they hit you like that, it's their fault, not your own.

I started driving when I was 8 in go karting. Then I started in cars on private tracks at 13 and passed my test like 3 months after my 17th birthday a couple years ago. I was never slow and I never got in the way.

I was such a nervous driver, I delayed taking my tests. Now when I see a learner, I keep my distance and drive the safest I can to make sure I don't spook them or something, and say encouragements in my car. They can't hear me though. When I was a learner doing reverse bay parking between two fancy cars, I took forever but got in perfectly. Didn't know there was a a mum in one car and a dad in the other waiting for their kids. They just looked at me, clapping hands and giving thumbs ups. That small positive gesture boosted my confidence so much.

​@@effieffieTell me you aren't a good driver without telling me you aren't a good driver, going over speed bumps without slowing down to around 10-20km/h can damage your car, that's the whole point of a speed bump, to make you slow down so you can have more time to react if some kid tries to cross the street without looking or something like that, I mean speed bumps are usually placed around school zones at least in my country

Once someone was tailing me and passed me while honking and flicking me off as I was getting into my exit lane. He was so busy making sure I knew how much I had inconvenienced him that he didn't realize he'd passed me only to end up behind a dump truck. The "slow" lane filled up with cars before he could swerve back over and I got a good laugh. 😂

These videos really make me wish I didn't learn to drive in the states. I would be way more equipped starting out there than I am with nearly a decade of American driving. In my state, we aren't testing on emergency braking. We are hardly tested on parking.. technically I should have not been passed, but the instructor could see I was just nervous (or he just didn't care 😂). Wild the difference.

Not that I care what people do, but defensive driving is not always safer. Depends on how you drive defensively. Driving 5-10 mph under the speed limit is honestly far more dangerous than just keeping up with traffic

It's about driving in a manner that gives you options to escape if necessary, like leaving space in front, controlling the traffic behind you at a light so you can ensure that they wont rear end you, staggering your car in traffic so you have escape routes if anything happens.

@@Nenemonalways on the worst roads too. Got a 20 road that is almost wide enough to park a bus horizontally and still got speed bumps everywhere. I’d understand if it was a narrow road that you really ought to watch you speed on but on an open wide road with fields to either side, it really isn’t necessary.

A driving instructor that doesn't teach defensive driving should not be an instructor.It's one of the most important parts of driving. Most drivers haven't a clue about defensive driving,they are hopeless!

Defensive driving doesn't mean paying attention to the person behind you and breaking early for them. If someone is riding you, you let them pass when safely able to do so. You domt change your breaking patterns or keep glacing back. That's a huge no no and takes your attention away from REAL defensive driving tactics which rely on focusing on what's in front of you and next to you.

You sound just like my driving instructor did and I love it. She was great, I loved her. I had a bus try to shove me off the road because he wanted to merge onto my lane (only 2 lanes, going in the same direction too) I couldn't move forward or back, I was in a jammed traffic line. The driving school car is a small car and people seemed to think they could bully me off the road because of the L signs on the car. But my driving instructor was a fierce woman, she'd tell me "just focus on what you're doing" and lay on the horn, while giving them the stink eye and a "wtf are you doing?" look. Worked every time.

it's not about getting far - it's about getting in front of a driver. I don't know why the learner would care, now they can drive how they want without someone distracting them behind them. Bad advice from the instructor, they should have just said just let people like that overtake and move on with your day

There's a stretch of highway I drive that's about 20~ minutes, with 3 red lights on the path. Anyone who I'm near at the beginning of the stretch will quite literally be at the last stoplight with me. Mf's really think they goin somewhere LMAOOO

In situations like this, I normally pull over wherever its safe, let them drive past, then continue onwards. Tailgating like this pressures me to drive at unsafe speeds for the road, so it's better to pull over and let them drive past.

The difference between 'was' and 'were' in this case can be really difficult to grasp, especially for non-native speakers, and ESPECIALLY because in every single other scenario, 'I were' is grammatically incorrect. It's far more beneficial to explain _why_ something is incorrect, kindly, than to berate - both for the other human being you're speaking to, possibly trying desperately to understand English's strange and inconsistent rules, _and_ for your own blood pressure.

If you guys really want to know how to do with a tailgater, you let them pass when safely able to do so. Don't brake differently to accommodate them, your putting too much focus on what's behind, not infront or to the sides, which is where "defensive driving" and "tactical meneurvering" really come into play. You don't drive defensively or maneuver in regards to who's behind you unless it's clear your about to get smacked.

They brought her attention onto a relatively minor thing she couldn't do anything about and then continued to distract her with someone else's behavior on the road that she couldn't change. Happened to me yesterday, a car was desperate to pass by me, going at the speed limit. He whizzed by, on a corner, narrowly avoiding an accident. He immediately got caught in temporary traffic lights and I followed him for 5 miles! Made me smirk.

A rule of thumb for most drivers is when you're first starting out (or just not a good driver) follow the speed limit. When there are clearly more experienced drivers going around you it doesn't matter the limit. At that level the only limit is other drivers and cops. Laugh at him, but after that stop he is going to save several minutes not staying behind a slow driver.

She mentioned that she drives at the speed limit. And seeing that road, I bet that it's not much more than 20 mph, which is really slow and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it. Not too long ago, I was in the driving school as well, driving on 20 mph roads, constantly being tailgated. I asked my driving instructor if this is something normal or if people do this only to learners. She confirmed that most people tailgate learners or new drivers who have that 'P' sticker on their cars. My mum had a 'new driver' sticker on her car and people were constantly tailgating her, even though she sometimes drove above the speed limit. Now, she doesn't have that sticker anymore and she's not tailgated as much.

Their liability but your injury. When I was 10 I was in a minor accident where a cat slammed into us from behind. I still get chronic back pain and am still in agony when lying down or standing for long periods of time. Yeah, the other driver is liable, but you still have consequences to your health.

To be fair, even though your attention should be on the road ahead (and miles ahead when possible), I was taught to always keep your head on swivel especially in situations like this. I must admit I do that too 🤣 I don't mean abrupt breaking but just easing up on the speed. and if it gets worse I ease up on the speed even more. I have to warn the tailgaters that I have no limit in easing up the speed and I don't care going ridiculously slow if I need to. I'm trying to protect myself, my car and also you and your car. fortunately I'm a young woman so these, usually it's one type of "men", think I'm just a dumb bimbo who doesn't know how to drive. have no clue I do it on purpose (also I live in Europe so I'm not worried about somebody shooting me in a road rage)
