the lead singer is from Michigan (also Ohio) and he knew pretty quick that LA wasn’t for him. he moved to arizona and basically established his own community there. 2:02 and that is exactly why the definition of fame is shifting over to meet influencers/youtubers/etc. I'm a guitarist/pianist but it's real common I'm on a tool track for the rhythm and vocals. Fret, dipshits, flush, mom, certainly, latte, hairpiece, prozac... the man uses some uncommon words in lyrics. Knowing he writes lyrics for finished pieces of music, I bet he was listening to this as an instrumental in the car driving around LA. - I think "learn to swim" is just a play on the state being sucked into the pacific leaving all the people he's talking about to literally sink or swim. 11:30 That's plain badass - it's exactly the type of connection and effect many of us want as musicians. The ‘learn to swim’ chant is a double entendre. The first sense is the obvious one: Maynard’s praying for SoCal to slide off into the ocean, so-obviously-all the sorry sods living there had better learn to swim. In that sense, it’s a dark joke. However, in a more metaphorical sense, he’s saying that change is coming-one way or another-and these vain, self-important, over privileged, over-protected, out-of touch folks who’ve gotten rich despite contributing nothing of value to society better learn to make themselves useful, because when change DOES come, they are literally the most useless sector of the human population-them and mid-level government bureaucrats- and nobody’s gonna carry their sorry arses whilst society crumbles.
