I think the main problem with Rings of Power, and Jake kinda circled around this, is that there is no real central drama at the heart of the story. So, it falls flat as a series, imo. As for the Lord of the Rings/Tolkien fans, this show changes so much of the background story as to not be worth watching on that front. Jackson's films made huge changes to the story/lore/characters but it felt like all of that was in service of adapting the books into a compelling series of films (with a traditional three act structue). I'm frankly kind of tired of this big fantasy adaptations that fail as both faithful retellings of the source material and, more importanly, as interesting stories worth watching. I look at Rings of Power and Wheel of Time and have to wonder who in the hell it was made for?

I had very low expectations for this season, but so far at least most of the storylines have been more interesting to me, maybe excluding Numenor and Isildur's whole deal with the refugees. They even managed to make the Harfoot storyline actually kind of fun, because the Stranger (Gandalf?) can now actually talk and they have a pretty wholesome dynamic. Also only having Nori and her friend is an improvement over the murderous harfoots from season 1, and the design of the Rhun armor looks cool. I'm not expecting the season to be anything great but unlike in the first episodes of S1, I also wasn't seiously bored at any point during the first 3 episodes, so I'm willing to give it a chance to at least be kind of harmless entertainment. I wouldn't go out of my way to get an Amazon subscription for it I wasn't sharing my sister's account, though.

I just think making a show about the second age - but without rights to the stories of the Silmarillion - is absolutely pointless. A TV story, by Amazon, from two show runners I’ve never heard of, tacked onto a world as well thought out as Tolkien’s can’t help but feel like second rate fan fic to me.

The Silmarillion gives all the elven characters, and Numenor, so much interesting background and without that context the second age just feels hollow.

So fully aligned with Jake on this one. I went back and watched the Numenor scenes in ep 3 again because I thought I must've missed something but they were all just so small, they're supposed to be having a once in every 80 years or so event in a coronation and it feels like a town hall meeting that gets interrupted by someone with a bowling ball and a large bird. Don't even get me started on them spending a whole plotline justifying Nori being the one to come up with Gandalf's name, or Galadriel becoming a ringbearer because Gil-galad has butterfingers.

It is hard for me to divorce my knowledge of the lore and try to watch the show critically, but… I love this season so far. Big step up for me and finally fulfilling the promise of some of the big plotlines of the Second Age
@saulgoneman

Yeah I think the plot with Sauron is a step-up, the orcs are interesting, and they're salvaging Galadriel, but I have basically no investment in the other plots. The Dwarves are a total caricature - "There is a saying in Khazad-dum: the slow drip breaks the boulder" (paraphrased) - and I don't even remember what the conflict between the Durins is. The Stranger/Harfoot plot is continuing to drag its feet, and the Southlands/Pelargir is fine I guess. Numenor had some potential last season but at this point my interest is gone - a plot about political conflict where none of the characters get enough screentime to remotely develop the conflict. And it looks like we're going to be introduced to a bunch more tangential nonsense with the introduction of Rhun, so yay. Some reviewers have said the end of the season is better (and focuses more on the actually interesting Celebrimbor/Sauron stuff), and I hope they're right, but the show is still in 6/10 territory for me. It can be decent fun, I enjoy it more than I don't, but I can't pretend its very good.

I've watched the first 2 and a half. I really am enjoying the sauron and elves plotline. Still not sold on the halflings or isildur plotlines. The dwarves also feel less interesting than last season, maybe thats because there is an actually interesting plot this time around with the elves.

Most people who like it seem to prefer the Sauron stuff and don't get the Halffoot stuff. Probably because the not-Hobbits aren't relevant to what's going on.

It's still early days but I feel like this season is a lot more focused than the last. I'm even enjoying the storylines I didn't enjoy last season (Numenor is still quite dull...) and the characters are more interesting. I actually quite enjoy Arondir's screen time, his entrance this season was a real highlight. And the Annatar reveal lives rent-free in my mind. Giving Sauron a proper presence this season is probably why I'm enjoying it way more than the first.

I think it's weird to believe that se2 was changed to "hold Galadriel accountable bc people disliked her" for two reasons: 1. Se2 started already shooting as Se1 was ending 2. These characters holding Galadriel accountable naturally flows from her actions in Se1. I just don't see a change being necessary. That was always the plan, imo.

I do agree that the score and set design is the strongest part of the show. I believe the reason almost everyone watches or reads fantasy media is for the escapism it provides and Rings of Power really delivers in providing that immersive fantasy experience. However of course the writing is indeed lacking, but in truth, it will always lack when compared to Tolkien (the father of modern fantasy). That being said my greatest criticism is the pace. There’s an incredible lack of urgency and conflict (as you shared Jake) that makes the show feel almost lifeless. If they’d remove the istari plotline I believe the show would be more interesting in a narrative sense. One more thing, I disagree about Sauron. I think he may be the most interesting in the series. His conflict with the orcs is sort of lore accurate and it provides another obstacle for his quest of domination. In the lore, Sauron desires order above all things, so giving him an almost Thanos-like motivation to bring that order with the rings of power is appropriate. To unite the peoples of middle earth is actually a compelling objective, and especially compelling when he proposes to the orcs that his way is the only way for their survival (which is true!). Anyways I’m still intrigued and appreciative of the show-runner’s attention to detail.

The most devastating sentiment I have about thos show is that it is boring. It should be a show about the mechanics of corruption and it tries to be, but it never delivers, because a) most characters and societies are already corrupted, just need an easy push and b) you never get a sense of real dread an loss of e.g. innocence, values or honour. It tells that for example the elves fear death, but it does not show. Ot tells that Númenor is a society on a brink, but it does not show. This world, its characters and the stakes all feel empty. And that makes it boring.

Oddly, enough I preferred season 1 Galadriel. In the first season she came across as an insane fanatic, and although that was probably unintentional, I actually thought it made her more entertaining to watch. So far I have just been watching this season for the pretty scenery (although I share your frustration with the dark scenes). None of the plotlines are particuliarly compelling. Elrond and his dwarf friend were fun to watch together in the first season, but now that they are apart they are pretty boring individually. It is somewhat interesting to watch Sauron manipulate people, but that is about it.

Nah, us lore nerds won't be excited by the lore, because they keep fiddling with it in weird fundamental ways. Like filling in gaps with stuff that adds some colour, that's interesting, fundamentally saying something else about one of the major players of the entire series, that's where you should make your own story inspired by LotR (as Jacqueline Carey did with her Sundering duology, where she told the story with the Dark Lord having a more sympathetic view, while y'know, still being a villain of sorts). Giving Sauron nuance, that's great. Having Sauron be punked by a bunch of orcs and having them follow some elf dude is laughable. Dude was the lord of the vampires, the leader of the were wolves, the shape shifting sorcerer. He defeated Fingon in a duel of songs of Power, he's already made war on the elves for millennia, and lead orcs for centuries! It doesn't add nuance, it "humanizes" him. But he's _not_ human, he's a powerful shape changing spirit, akin to a fallen angel. Seeing what makes that guy tick? Very cool. But it's got to actually *be* Souron, it can't be some other guy's head. Who cares about that? (Galadriel is a whole other thing, they've done such odd things with her character, it's laughable.)

I watched one or two episodes in season 1. Did not grab me. From watching a few current reviews I get the impression that if they didn’t have ‘Lord of the Rings’ in the title and made a fantasy adventure show they wouldn’t have a rod for their own backs. Would have had more opportunity to make an interesting story.

"Self aware" is the wrong term. This season, to me, comes off as self conscious or insecure. Self awareness would imply an understanding of the root of the problem and fixing the larger issues while the approach here seems to be lets tweak things just enough to make it appear like we are course correcting while completely ignoring the largest issues at the core of the series. The writing is just god awful, the liberties taken with the lore almost make me forget I'm watching a middle earth based series at points, with only the constant name drops dragging me back to the reality that this is what we got.

Sauron's trips are just crazy. That horse is the real Sauron if you ask me. On the other hand, conveniently Gil Galad takes ages to warn Celebrimbor that Halbrand was Sauron. Stranger's part is soooo boring. And you are never tense, because in a way, you want them to be captured and die, because that would help the pace of the story. I agree with Nadia that Galadriel is more self aware. Last season she was an entitled prick. Now she's just a prick. Small improvement. But overall I'm leaning to Jake's side. Any improvement is just too little too late. 95% is the same crap as the first season.

@JordanSedai
@JordanSedai 2 ай бұрын
I agree that how it was visualized was probably too reminiscent of Venom and that causes an immediate visceral response. However, I actually kind of do like the idea that Sauron’s soul had been warped and corrupted from a usual immortal soul, which would normally turn into a shade that would basically drift toward Valinor on the winds. Instead, I can imagine that Melkor’s influence may have made it black and heavy, rather than ethereal and light. Seeing Melkor actual influence him as some justification for this decision would have been nice, but is out of the scope. But yeah, I also like the implication of his spirit being more physical because he wouldn’t want to return to Valinor, else he would be judged and punished for doing evil and siding with Melkor. Unfortunately, that doesn’t exactly fit with the textual redemption arc he seemingly sought out on the boat, but I can see it working thematically. So it is all headcanon, but I can make it make sense/feel reasonable.
