What on earth did I just watch.
This game is billed by some as the best club game to watch in Spain.
I by the off chance decided to tune in to watch the final ten minutes and I was not disappointed.
Was that a deliberate knock on in the final play?!
We are not sure who owns the rights to this so if you want this video removed then please comment on this video and we will get it down.

I’m a kiwi and I like the way they play the game. It kind of reminds me of how we play at club level in NZ, but their commentary is way better. I love watching an open style of rugby, and plus it’s really fun to play like that. Vamos Espana!

Gotta agree - as a Saffa it's nice to see them not kicking the ball away (as we do) - possession is 9/10ths of the game

Dion, they will get there. They just need to be patient. Spanish rugby has come on by leaps and bounds. They could be another Argentina in a few years. Think where Argentina was say 20 years ago, compared with today. I think the Spanish are heading in that direction.

Maybe, maybe not. Some countries are so dominated by certain sports it becomes hard for other sports to attract anybody. As an example here in Ireland the domestic soccer league has been going for nearly 150 years and hasn't improved a whole lot as a result of Gaelic games and certainly rugby in the last few decades. Brian o driscol and others inspired a generation to become rugby players but robbie Keane and others could not do the same in my opinion.

baby ! True, and soccer is very dominant in Spain as it is here in England, but with a population of over 46 million (compared to 6.4 million on Ireland) there may be enough capacity or market for the game to develop. I know the German RFU has real ambitions to develop where, for them, finding a reliable and substantial sponsor has been the next important step. But if they succeed like the USA recently has then they will quickly rise up the rankings. Even if in Spain they don’t, at least they are playing and enjoying the game.

Germany has the money thanks to Wild patronage and there's no big sponsor in sight for Spain, but things are improving little by little. Women have Iberdrola paying the bills and Generali came on board to become main sponsor on men's XV shirts, while decent results have allowed 7s to be funded by the Olympic committee. And the relevance of the game is still way ahead than in other nations considered emerging by World Rugby. There aren't a lot of them where you already have 32,000 registered players, 300 clubs and a 10% growth every year. We even have parents switching their children from soccer to rugby because of the ethos of the game and lots of pitches are being improved or built. Unfortunately FER (Spanish Rugby Union) carries a big debt due to mismanagement by the former president and lacks a good communication strategy. I wish they knew how to lobby and show the world the good things that are being done here.
@pedrodelgado-armchairfan785

Only for the sake of comparison... Registered players: - Italy - 87k - Spain - 32k - Russia - 26k - Brazil - 17k - Germany - 11k - Romania - 10k - Uruguay - 9k - Namibia - 8k - Georgia - 8k - Portugal 6k (as many as in Madrid alone) The problem isn't the number of players but the professionalisation of the game. Many reject a potential pro career in order to study, it was the case even for some of the Spanish players that reached the Olympics in Sevens or former XV national team captain.

guys, im spanish, im a rugby player and i can say that here we dont have a rugby culture, so players meet rugby very late, at age of 25 more or less, we dont have a full proffessional league, and we only put real money on football, so dont say rugby here is a shit, just think that rugby here is growing, little by little.

No. Thats not true, Eneko. Ni tanto ni tan calvo. ¿A los25?
@enekochorroperez2487

The frantic rhythm of these last 3 minutes of the game I think are due to the tight result of the score. SilverStorm El Salvador won the final of the Copa del Rey two years ago with the presence of 26,000 people in the city's football stadium against the other club in the city. In the stadium was King Felipe VI, which without any doubt, helped to have a media impact of the incredible event. It was a boring game but with a very big emotional charge and that won the SilverStorm El Salvador of valladolid, the most awarded Club in the region and the city. www.rtve.es/alacarta/videos/rugby/rugby-copa-del-rey-final-silverstorm-salvador-vrac-quesos-entrepinares/3572824/ No doubt the Rugby in Spain is growing and the clubs are, little by little, professionalizing their management and sports structures. Keep an eye on Rugby Spain and its clubs (at least the 3-4 leading the Heineken league of 'Honor division'). Without going any further, last year SilverStorm El Salvador competed in the third European competition with Italian, Russian and Belgian clubs with excellent matches and very tight results, even with Krasny Yarsk in Moscow, where the Valladolid team played a great game.

For a country where rugby isn't a big sport, i liked the crowd and there was nothing wrong with the way they played. I would actually like a commentator like this guy in English the excitement and love for the game is clearly there. Also players cant be faulted for that crappy call at the end...slap down clearly a penalty!! Do you know the teams names in the clip?

@pedrodelgado-armchairfan785
@pedrodelgado-armchairfan785 6 жыл бұрын
Hopefully that 'second tier Six Nations' already exists. There's no promotion and relegation towards Six Nations, but Rugby Europe promotes a tournament (Rugby Europe Championship) in almost the same weekends whose roots date back to the 1930s. It's where France played while they were banned from the Five Nations and where Italy used to be before 2000. But Georgia and Romania are ahead of Spain if somebody wills to give them a shot :)

Since the 1920s, we even reached 1999 RWC. But the game has grown a lot, registered players figures have doubled in six or seven years. The official target is to reach 40,000 by 2020 and things like both men and women reaching the Olympics in 7s or good finals being hosted in soccer stadiums are helping.

Well, the situation isn't that dramatic. As the sport gains traction in Spain, many town halls are pretty supportive and lots of pitches are being either renovated or built. In or around Madrid I would say at least 10 of them have had works or are being planned for the near-future.
