It's something I picked up on in the first episode but I'm very happy with the writing choice to have Kingpin consistently spend gobs of money on disposable interpreters and technology translators all to avoid actually learning ASL. It demonstrates a clear divide between the real love of Maya's family who all learn sign and the obsessive love of Kingpin that just seeks to buy affection with no actual desire to understand the other person. I'm glad that she finally addresses it in this episode.

On the other hand, it's also an innate quality of the uber-wealthy: that they'd rather spend money than time. Their reasoning is that they can always get more money, but time is limited. So I don't necessarily feel he's seeking to buy her affection in that particular instance - I believe he really thinks that this is a perfectly acceptable alternative to learning ASL and that she will appreciate the gesture. (But he IS trying to buy her off with the invitation to help run his empire, lol.)

Henry told her "I don't want you to be me." Fisk told her "Kill me; I want you to be me." I suspect that had Maya not spoken to Henry first, she may have taken Fisk's offer and tried to kill him. But Henry's warning, coming from a blood relative, resonated with her as Henry watching out for her.

I’m of the opinion that if people can wear military pants/jackets, and hunting attire (which can look very good in its own right as fashion), than you can have a tactical sweater vest. I like the armpit gun holsters that can be used to hold money, glasses, note books, maybe some bandaids. Tactical attire for civilian fashion is cool. Also, standing births are prominent in a lot of tribal and nomadic civilizations. It appears in Jewish and Muslim culture from time to time. Ancient Jewish mothers and Egyptians also have a birthing method historically where the mother will sit on the lap of her husband or midwife during the birth. It’s supposed to make pushing easier, as well as give the mother support during harder births.

It is NOT the hammer Fisk used to kill his father(that was a claw type hammer). His mother would have disposed of that with the body. Fisk simply had one his is goons pick up a hammer to use a prop to temp Maya to "strike him down and complete her journey to the dark side."

So in the comics Echo's power is like TaskMaster, she can Echo anyone's fighting skill, but I think this is a much better take on it and I love that they tied her into the Choctow creation story.

The ancestral nonsense is so unnecessary. The powers dont even make sense. Just some classic marvel pandering. This doesn't come close to being better than the source material. Her being like taskmaster would've been more interesting seeing as they already messed that up in Black Widow.

People have made technology like that, but ASL isn't just hand movements, it's also facial expressions and body language beyond moving your arms. And it's very regional and cultural. Like there's four ways to say why for example (that I know, and I have only been learning for a very short time, since my mom started losing her hearing). It's like using google translate to talk to people. It's something, but it's cold, often wrong, and it's not like actually learning the language. It's going to end up in miscommunication greater than the miscommunication that can and does still happen when people actually speak a shared first language.

One of the things I've really enjoyed about this show is seeing how they handle sign - Alaqua especially since she's deaf herself and has a more natural grasp on it, but everyone else too since they have someone on staff directing it as well as Alaqua responding to it. Chula's version of what I call/was taught was "once upon a time/a long long time ago" was so much more evocative than what I was taught/what I do, for example. It was so fluid and beautiful.

They did an amazing job with the ASL in this series. I don't know ASL beyond a handful of signs, so I can't speak to the accuracy of the signing, but the signing felt so natural from all the actors, it felt like all these actors have been signing for years.

That's not a tactical vest, it's a posture harness. It's for correcting spinal curvature and relieving back & shoulder pain. Maya probably wears one because of the amount of walking she's having to do with a makeshift prosthetic limb.

'cause up to that point, he's carefully curating his "Uncle" image - even to ordering a new white suit so she wouldn't see the stains. but i think he was like, "ah, a young me."

The second time watching that hotel confrontation scene it really struck me how selfish and manipulative Fisk's play was. He clearly sees a kind of kindred spirit in Maya. He tried to mold her as much as he could. And I think handing her the hammer was a play to get her to stick to his script - so that even if she killed him, she would be emulating him
