I don't think they could've played this year out without losing Jaylen's trust in the front office (that has already been compromised by the KD trade rumors), they practically didn't have a good alternative. Also, they can confidently say they have a legit chance to win with their current core. Which is a privilege very few teams have

The number of things that would have to go right for the Celtics to be a better team without Brown is huge. Tatum, Brown, and Porzingis are all entering their prime. The Celtics made the call to keep Jaylen because the alternatives weren't good enough. They should have at least tried to make him sign a contract just under the yearly super max number to give them more cap flexibility. Moreover, they lost Grant Williams for two seconds (new CBA rules forced them) and flipped Smart for Porzingis plus three firsts. Let's see what they make of their roster and assets.

as a celtics fan, I agree. this contract will end up being pretty awful. next season is gonna be a huge indicator whether jaylen brown wants to be a great player or a "pretty good" player. the dribbling (and general wonky fundamentals) have been a problem for multiple years. it hasn't been addressed. now they cost his team a chance to go to the nba finals and he was exposed. big time. i had some fellow fans on the celtics subreddit try and say "it's cause he has small hands" (which is total horseshit) and that there's a "myth" and overpaying players doesn't really exist in the league. i'm not drinking the copeium. i really hope they move him next summer. not because i dont like him, but because i think he's reached his ceiling and we're not gonna win a title with him as our second best guy. i'd love to be proven wrong, but i dont see it. and for the record - if a player ever signs a contract and there's a consensus that the team needs to win the title to justify it, it's likely it was a bad contract.

And he knows where he needs to work on now is clear as day. This will be the difference between him and Ben Simmons. I generally don't like takes like this because it really seems that you are not seriously engaging with the reality of what the alternatives actually were. The Celtics are clearly committing to this current roster for the next 3 years. Your main argument in the prior video is that trading Jaylen Brown gives the Celtics more "flexibility." But, flexibility to do what? Trading for Damian Lillard would increase your chances slightly, but shortens your championship window drastically. Trading for "a couple of cuspy young players on expiring contracts" most likely just delays the roster decisions another year, in the hopes of trading for... what star player? Luka Doncic? Devin Booker? Those both seem like a stretch. I don't see any scenario where the Celtics build a better roster than this one if I am to be frank.

I don't think they had a choice. If they didn't offer him a super max, he was going to walk, then you're stuck trading him for 60 cents on the dollar. You don't get better by trading Jalen for Robert Covington, salary filler, and a couple picks. If you think you can trade him for someone better... who? You can't let stars walk, and you can't trade them for 3-4 different players, it doesn't work (trading a star for draft picks is also historically a loser, since the team GETTING the star player only gives up late 1st round picks, those players on average tend to last 4-5 years in the league). The problem was doubling down on 2nd-row Joe. He's not a championship coach. Maybe in 5-10 years with more experience, but I doubt it. The peak for Joe M, is Doc Rivers without KG. He's a player's coach, and player's coaches rarely win. Doc got lucky when the Celtics picked up KG, he was the engine that drove that team. Listen to the stories about him at Celtics practices. "Player's coaches" fail because they don't push the team or hold them accountable. Udoka got them to the finals by being the toughest guy on the team, and the Celtics lost him and the 2nd toughest player now.

I am sorry but last I checked the Blazers have actually surrounded him with decent players and they did not go anywhere. When you are on a team with other stars you shine less, and I am not convinced that Brown is not a star yet. I don't hate the move. Boston isn't a free agent destination compared to places like LA or Miami. Really, when is the last time you heard a top 10 player say "I want to play in Boston" Jalen Brown has definite flaws. He's not an ideal #2 on a championship team. He is a good #2 for a solid playoff team. Jalen Brown is a player teams will overpay for. If things go south in year two and Brown is still playing at an All Star level a 3 year/180mil contract isn't bad for a team looking for respectability or has an untenable situation with a star that wants out. Maybe Edwards gets tired of losing in Minnesota? A Brown/Edwards swaparoo allows Minnesota to save face.

I agree with you because honestly, I’ve been saying this for the last three years, Tatum and Brown will never win a “Championship” together IMHO. Everybody hates me for saying it, but I believe it’s true simply for the fact that they duplicate each other on the court. Brown, IMHO, will never reach his talent potential in Boston because of Tatum’s presence. Simple as that. They won’t allow them to share the glory or the leadership of that team. It is what it is. If Brown truly wants to be all he can be, he will seek for a trade to somewhere where he can potentially be the leader of a team, have more say, or have the team center around him. He may not want that, but that’s my take.

I hate the statement someone was "given" anything. Jalen earned that contract. Both parties agreed to it. Celtics "offered" him the contract is fair. They did not gift him anything. He would have gotten a max contract (though less money) on another team.

At least this is the only way for the Celtics to make Jaylen Brown happy or else he will leave and they will have nothing in return.

Celtics doomed themselves by going small and chucking threes with mazzulla. Jb and jt can work if you have the right supporting cast but now grant and smart are out the door (their identity/leaders)

You can trade him later. They have a variety of assets. No offense, but I think Brad Stevens and co have a better idea of what's going on than you.

the first good objective review! most are just not objective. thx. they start dreaming and are making brown always better than he is. dribble down his weaknesses. brown is only a solid 2nd option player. never he will be a 1st option on a contender. why paying him like a 1st option superstar? he is not scoittie pippen. even pippen was not a successful 1st option in houston or portland. brad stevens will trade him next offseason. i believe boston just got a good offer on the table now, so they give him the extension.

Lmfao you know Scottie was not even asked to be the 1st option in Houston or PDX?

@@jparks3998 he came there to be the 1st. it didn´t work out, because he isn´t a 1st option like brown. just not the creation level u need to be as a 1st option.

Making Playoff runs without winning a Championship is just wear & tear on the players.

Love your videos but man I disagree with your JB takes. They did prove they can win a chip when they lost to the warriors. They've been the #1 defense with this core. You also say they can't win with this core but they just made a major change in their core so I'm not really sure why you feel so sure this isn't going to work out for the Cs. I say be patient and watch because Jaylen Brown is going to come out next year and prove all you basketball commentators wrong. He's a plus defender, elite scorer, good ball handler minus left hand drives which he will improve on, and he shines in the biggest moments whether you realize it or not. He's carried the celtics through series but just because it wasn't the ECF or the finals people don't give him the credit he deserves.

Smart is easily the reason why boston chokes in crunch time. He tries to play hero ball or make dumb decisions. Just look at last year ecf. The play was clearly designed for white to take a open corner shot. Smart chose to do a turn around fadeaway 3. White knew he was gonna do something stupid so he ran to the rim and made a game winning shog..

the celtics core has proved year after year that they are one of the best eastern conference teams and they have more firepower than most even after this recent off-season. but i think the two Jays are a better duo on paper than on the court, yes they can make tough shots, but you cannot run many actions with the two of them which scramble a defense like other duos (bam and jimmy, jokic and murray, steph and dray, fox and sabonis). Furthermore, they both score in very similar ways, perhaps if brown can get better at drawing fouls that may help get good defenders in foul trouble (although he has been inconsistent at the line), but otherwise i don't have much faith in them against the better defensive teams unless one of the jays goes crazy like tatum in game 7.

Call me stupid, but I think the issue is Tatum and his struggle dribbling with both hands, not Brown.

They both have kind of the same flaws (weak driving to the hoop against solid defense, choke artists) that compound on each other in the playoffs.
