Melissa's handling in compacting the story is excellent. Him just touching her for the first time was beyond a kiss on his part. In the book he knew he shouldn't touch her but he couldn't help himself. The next day he did it again. It is the way he builds up a tolerance but knowing that at any second he could push too hard, accidently, and she's be dead. Bella didn't understand that so it was up to him to keep a healthy distance when he could. Had he been a younger vampire she would have instantly died and many others.
