Rubber makes him pump his blood faster by having him speed up his heart beat with rubber! That's how gear 2nd is done. And it makes sense actually because regular humans can't make their hearts beat faster forcefully because most people would die if their hearts beat that fast and hard ,, but Luffy doesn't die because his hearts rubber so he's able to speed up his blood flow that way which makes him faster and stronger in gear 2nd! Actually, its only gear 2 that shaves time on his life due to the excess strain on his heart. Gear 4 doesnt have the same drawback, its just massively draining to his Haki.

The only gear the took his life span was g2 and he mastered it G3 made him short he mastered it At first g4 made Luffy run out of energy and haki quickly. But he he can 100% master it bc he will always drain haki in that form. G5 just makes Luffy extremely exhausted for a second then he’s back. The whole point of g5 is freedom so if there’s a be draw back to it then is he really free?
