My wife and I just got back from Japan and Tokyo Disney! If you’re going to be using subways often it could be worth getting an IC card like Suica, if you have an iPhone you can even add a virtual Suica card through wallet then you don’t even need to use cash to top up. Also as a bonus, they can be used for a lot of the vending machines and convenience and some food stores (like ramen shops) that would otherwise only accept cash in Tokyo.

Chris, Japan has a very clean and hygienic culture. The Japanese are very considerate of other people. They wear masks when on mass transit, and will wear masks if they have a small cough. It’s very different from the US. Also, those “slippers” are house shoes. It’s expected to take your shoes off and to wear the house shoes while in your room to avoid bringing dirt inside. Great video as always. I’m excited for this new adventure!

Was going to say this, heck even in the US I've had Japanese students who would wear a mask in class (this was before COVID) because they're feeling a bit sick. Also yeah on the shoes too, my Asian wife has trained me in the art of shoe wearing in the house aka TAKE YOUR SHOES OFF!

Japan is amazing. So much to see and do. Mask wearing is normal and they've been doing it for years, way before covid. Its also frowned upon to eat or drink on a train/tube or whilst waking around. They are extremely friendly people and most speak English and love to help if you get stuck 😊

When I traveled in to Narita Airport (Tokyo) for the first time I was so afraid I would be flagged for fever. They have body temp monitors in the airport and pull you aside if you have elevated body temp (this was way before C). Masks are totally common out there and were so long before C. One of my favorite things in the hotel, supplied hotel room slippers. Very cleanly country. I absolutely loved Japan, hyper modern futuristic. Have a wonderful trip!!!

I'm so happy you are finally getting to go Chris - if you remember I was in Paris when you were starting your "world tour" and then so sad for you when the pandemic made you have to stop early. Tokyo is incredible. I empathise with you feeling nervous going for the first time, as someone from the UK I'd travelled to most of Europe, USA and Canada a lot but my first time to Japan I was nervous because it feels SO different, culture shock, but don't be worried, its an incredible place with wonderful people and you'll adjust really quickly. Its sad that Amanda and Miles couldn't malke it this time but I just know there will be many opportunities going forward - think of this as you doing a recce to scout it out and prepare your route for when they join you in the near future! :) Have a lovely time

Oh man.. I feel you, I just went to japan last month. It was a really great experience filled with mistakes. The fun of getting "lost" and just wandering the streets. My Father Passed away in Jun and the last thing he Encouraged me to do was travel. So I picked hard mode and Booked a solo trip to Japan. All I can say is I found out a lot about myself traveling alone and expanded my view of the world and how people treat each other. Hope its amazing and 7-11 will save you. From Refilling your IC card, Cheap Tasty food, and Atms to get more Yen. Again have fun and your video is making me want to book a tip. If you have time to Visit Dotonburi in osaka.. the melon bread Ice cream sandwich street vendor is Fantastic!

I was in Japan on March 13th, not a whole lot changed in terms of the masks in Tokyo (almost everyone still wore them, even outside), but we spent a lot of time in Niigata, and there, a decent (maybe 1/3 the people didn’t wear masks (inside)). Still way more than here in the USA, where nobody wears them anymore 😂. I’m currently in Disneyland, and I could prob count the number of people that have masks on with one hand (in any given location).

Chris you need to get a PASMO or SUICA card to ride the trains. they are much more convenient than the paper tickets. you just load the card with money and then just scan them at the turnstile. i saw how tired you are when you got to Tokyo. I travel a lot there and everytime you have to force yourself to stay up that first night or you are awake at 2:30 am until you get used to it. pretty funny that you lose a day going there but when you get back you will arrive before you left... LOL.. Enjoy your time.. I love Japan. its always a fun time..

Japan had a mask wearing culture long before the pandemic. Even the Westerners I watch who live in Japan wore masks most of the time. You should be able to find one eiter at a conbini (convenience store) or a place like Lawsons or Don Quichotte. Also don't forget unlike in the States the food at convenience stores is pretty good.
