This happened to hubby and I at this birthday dinner we were invited to. There were about 20 to 25 people at this dinner. The restaurant served Tapas so the portions are small. Hubby and I ordered a couple of drinks and 2 tapas and shared it. The bill comes and it was 700 dollars. I look at my hubby like what is going on? He said don’t worry our food isn’t on that ticket. I was like huh? He said I told the waiter when he took our order to bring our bill separately. He said I’m not paying for a bunch of people I don’t even know to eat. We are team not here for it.

@@APTTMHYforever Umm ma’am who pockets you checking you, for “their” money?! Again “their” money?! If I didnt order it, I am not paying for it, plain and simple. Cheap is not pulling your own weight and expecting someone else to pay for it. When you can simply calculate what you ordered, your tip, and the tax, simple math skills and everyone has a calculator on the phone. Sounds like beater behavior to me. That’s something you discuss before entering a restaurant, splitting a bill is for if there is a predetermined amount for each person.

Immediately NO. I was once at a dinner with a group of ladies celebrating a birthday, and was told my split bill would be 124 dollars. I asked to see the bill, and I asked for a separate ticket, and then someone said “So you are paying for you?” YES. Had no problem paying for the birthday girl’s meal. However, that wasn’t what happened, I would have been paying for other people’s food and drink. Not to mention one of those at the dinner DIDN’T even care for me. If our bills are roughly the same amount, then it’s fine to split the bill. The issue is that this scenario is usually supported by the habitual line steppers. I learned to advise the waitress, before my order is taken in a group setting that I need a separate bill. Usually others will second that and we all get separate bills. Either way I order according to MY funds. People order totally different when they think they won’t have to pay their full bill. And when I decide to pick up the bill, I only announce that after orders are taken, or after I get the bill. It’s funny how thirsty or hungry people become after they find out they don’t have to pay. Don’t pimp me! Just don’t do that! My associates stopped that mess with me!

I'm in England. This is such a common practice here that asking people to pay for what they ordered rather than splitting the bill is considered gauche. People make you feel like you're the poor cousin who's making a fuss over nothing. This is, as EJ says, "upsetting to me." . I believe you should order what you can pay for, and deliberately not leave the house with more money than that so that your group, whether friends or workmates, learns the social etiquette of respecting each other's wallets. I'm an artist and have a career where one season is flush and another is tense. Thinking I'm being asked out cos I'm 'flush', that hurts me, and embarrasses me. *Order what you can pay for. It’s similar here and it makes no sense. Aside from how people want to look at or judge the person that doesn’t want to split, there is absolutely no harm done if everyone pays for their own order. While on the flip side, someone in the group has to take on expenses beyond what can easily afford or even budgeted for just not to appear gauche- keep up an appearance. Yea, that’s much better than everyone just paying for themselves. It’s just inconsiderate, really, to assume that everyone at the table has it as good as everyone else.

I don't give a damn. 2nd time I was out with friends at a lounge 5 ladies bill comes $600 I again know where this Is going and loudly tell everyone to pay your share and again another person got upset and didn't want to talk to me and I didn't give 2 damns. I don't come out to pay for other people s shit on the spot this isn't a date this is me eating out with friends pay your own shit! granted we all were sharing our food but still pay for your own shit my total $37.94 for my entire meal with 1 drink . I’m almost 80 years old. Over 40 years ago I’d go out with several friends (all girls). We would go to Manhattan (from Jersey) regularly for dinner and a show. We’d split the bill equally. I remember on one occasion someone who had joined us for the first time offered to pay more because she was the only one who had dessert. The oldest in the group replied, “We ALL had a good time!!!!” I think that best described how we viewed the evening, we were paying for a “good time” not just the meal. We paid for our theater tickets individually.) I live hundreds of miles away now and with COVID-19 this isn’t even an issue for those of us who are “sheltering in place” but I sure miss those “good times”.

I don't care what it is, get what you WANT I'll pay for your food. She felt better and we ate. I let the waiter know I was picking up the tab for myself and for her only. Screw that guy. 😒 I never expect anyone to pay for me. When I make plans to eat out with someone I'll say Hey let's go here...my treat?! If they balk I let them know it's ok, when I'm offering it's because I have it in my budget to do so, and when I don't have it in my budget I don't offer. If I invite someone to eat I do it because I have plenty of money to spend at a moderately priced place so they can feel free to get what they'd like. I also don't invite people out who are greedy or users. I take my loved ones out who appreciate me and with whom I have a mutually giving and respectful relationship. When someone asks me out to eat if I can't afford it I let them know, oh that's so nice of you I'd love to go but it's not in my budget. If they offer to pay I make sure they are certain and keep my selection to what I would order if I was paying. Mutual respect.

I’ve heard of this before. I’m paying for what I ordered. Sometimes, especially at dinner, people buy a lot of drinks. I don’t really drink, so I will not be contributing to others buying 5 drinks for $10 each. NO! You can’t let people take advantage of you. It would be the same for me at the business/networking dinner. Don’t tell me what to send up. If I only ordered $30 worth of food, I’d be pissed if some told me to send $100. Sounds like someone I should not be networking with. I think this situation gets more complicated when people are sharing appetizers and several of those are ordered. It’s best to communicate how the bill will be paid before even ordering.

Depends on location. Here in Los Angeles, most places don’t allow you to spit the check by what you order. They’ll only give you one check and either one person pays and then we have to figure it out later and Venmo the person that paid, or we have to figure it out right then and there (do the math), and then the waitress what to charge each card. So a lot of time it’s just a lot easier to split the check evenly

Thank you! I’m in Miami and it’s unheard of or very rare for people to ask to split the check by what they specifically ordered. They either split it evenly or one person pays the whole bill. As a server I feel like people are going out there way to be difficult when asking us to split a check 15 different ways. And if they do that please believe I will add automatic gratuity to their check and force them to tip me because I’m not doing all that math for free. ☺️

I had only a cheap "special of the day" meal and a glass of water. I had to work night shift and couldn't arrive to work sleepy from stuffing myself or under the influence. Split bill was over $100 per person. Never again. I tell the server my bill is separate up front. If they don't want to do that for a large group, I have no problem sitting at a separate table to get my food and bill and join the group later. I eat out with a budget and stick to it.

I have seen and been a part of it- splitting the bill equally. It works on condition- you know the crowd, everyone is reasonable- ordered a drink and a meal, shared an appetizer, had a genuinely good time/wanted to see these guys (no undertones of being taken by someone for a ride), then it feels good to split the bill equally. I have talked to someone about it- he said, splitting equally is part of breaking bread with someone, breaking bread with close friends. In all other cases, agree- ask the restaurant to split the bill.

It was frankly sad when you saw the income difference. I remember feeling Will in "The Pursuit of Happiness" in that cab... they have the money, they do not pay. I also got to mediate a situation where an acquaintance invited their friends to their birthday dinner on an expensive Rooftop in NYC and wondered if they could require a high minimum amount of money from everyone. I explained that when I invite, I pay ; when I offer we can discuss and choose what is best for all. Not forcing expanses on others. They took the advice as everybody was canceling...

MY EXPERIENCE!!! Splitting the Tab can only successfully occur (no hurt feelings, awkwardness or pettiness), when the group consists of mature employed people (6) OR, a group of mature employed people, who are also friends (6). How? Payment method is decided BEFORE we enter the restuarant or BEFORE we order. No need to be anxious. You can also opt out at this point. Now (5). If a friend is short or between jobs, we agree to "help a sista" because it could be me/you, next time.(4) We all order according to our pocket AND we share, IF asked. This way, we get a chance to "taste" a dish we were undecided about before ordering. We pay for our drinks SEPARATELY because we are not all drinkers and somebody's got to be the designated driver! We laugh, we eat, we drink. When the bill comes. We split it 4 ways + your drink. WE TIP and we go home. Until the next time. Oh, we also designate who will be responsible for determining our split. Usually, the designated driver. This is great when trying a new Restaurant. Or, celebrating someone's birthday or Congratulations on whatever. Substitute the broke person, in these scenarios.

Also, I think the concept originated in a time when it was difficult when it was difficult for servers to split checks for large parties. Everything is automated now and its just not the case. The servers in restaurants can open the tab for an entire table and split the tab by order before they even send your request to the back of the house. They are literally just pressing a button. This screams I want to be bougie but I don't know why we even started doing this, to me.

I live in NYC and this has come up (I've been here almost 20 years). Folks do split "evenly" here for friend gatherings. I was taken by surprise the first time because I tend to order on the low end...budget. I've learned to go out with specific groups and make my expectations more clear. I also don't order alcohol or appetizers...ever. Folks will order appetizers "for the table" and whatnot...you have to know who you're with and be ready.

Additionally, in NYC they always bring just 1 ticket or will say no more than 3 cards can be used!

No, No, No!!! I'm paying for what I ordered unless we planned this ahead of time, even then I would put a maximum on the bill. $ 600 for 6 people is reaching for the sky!

I went to lunch with a big group from the office. It was a weekly custom, but I rarely participated, largely because of the check splitting issue. I rode in a car with three other people, two of whom went to lunch together every day on the cheap. We arrived last and were seated at a little 4-top at the end of the group. It was a middle-eastern place. Our little table got our own check, and I let the others order for the table. They ordered platters of hummus and vegetables, salad, and falafel. I would have liked shwarma and fries, but I just went along and was satisfied. Our check came and we split it. A very aggressive woman from the other table demanded to know why we had to chip in much less than her table! “Why is yours $12 each and ours is $22?”Well, because we ordered fewer things. We enjoyed less and paid less. I dodged a bullet. 😅

If you decide that you want the much higher priced items on the menu let everyone including the server know that you are paying the higher portion of the bill or will pay for your portion separately (Slip your card to the server to do so.) Eliminating any mess when the final bill comes in. I am not paying for your bottle of vintage wine. No mam!

I would say the best thing to do is let the server know upfront whether it will be separate bills or together to avoid an awkward situation at the end of the night. In a business setting the person who is hosting the meeting or presenting the business proposition should pay! 🤷🏾‍♀️

I don't understand this. I can see if someone wanted to add extra out of kindness, but to assume I'm obligated to pay for the extravagance of someone else. No way.

I can see splitting with my girls if we go to a nice restaurant and it’s a la carte or something (or even Applebees spinach dip) and we each order something different and eat it all together. But that’s not often especially now that we’re older.

Now that you’re older you should know better. Proper dining etiquette is for one person to pay the entire bill or the bill is split evenly.
