My thinking on this - gate should go first as the guitar signal creates a surprising amount of noise, which I don't want running into my high gain pedals. Also if stacking high gain pedals I would also want a gate at the end, but before delay and reverb as you say.

That’s spot on about using a good power supply, I found this out recently (and I’ve been playing years!) Azor makes an affordable noise gate also. They have the same hard and soft switch. I have seen people use these at the front of a pedal train after the tuner to reduce hum coming from wiring in their home, and or coming directly from high output pickups. It that case it cleans the signal before it goes into the gain effects. I have seen where they can be used as you did before the timed effects such as delay , chorus and reverb. Noise pedals are an experiment on where they go in the pedal order. It is one pedal you have to move around to achieve what you need out of it. Added a thumbs up on your vid.

Nice video editing! I have this gate and the Donner Noise Killer, which is the exact same pedal under a different name. There are a couple of differences though: The sweep on the threshold control is different on each pedal (probably due to variances in the pot values) and there was an annoying grounding buzz on my Rowin version, which kind of defeated its purpose! However I discovered it went away when I touched the switch or jack connector and fixed it permanently by opening up the pedal and securing a small length of wire to ground the circuit without having to do any soldering. I attached one end under the nut that attaches the input jack to the enclosure and the other end to nut that attaches the toggle switch to the enclosure. I suppose that means they forgot to ground the Rowin version (at least the one I got). I just did a demo of my pedalboard rig with both noise gates on it on my channel.

Great review! I had a Sentry at one point but decided to get the Big Muff Deluxe because I needed a fuzz pedal and the deluxe version has a built in noise gate. But, the gate automatically shits off EVERYTHING which it gets annoying because it stops you from playing some sustained notes. My question is, like the Sentry pedal which I love, it has a tiny switch only to kill the hizz. Can this Rowin gate kill the hizz alone and not affect the tone and sustain of the notes? Thanks in advanced!
@DerekPaulGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment, the Rowin only has a threshold and hard or soft switch so it’s not able to just gate high frequencies, it will kill some of the sustain on the notes, might be worth looking at a different gate for your needs, and thanks for the kind words man! Cheers

I went with this exact same Rowin Noise Gate pedal as well and bought it on 4/5/2020, just 2 days before your video. As best I could tell, it's the same as the Mooer Noise Killer that sells for as much as 3X what the Rowin does. Looks like this is a mass produced Noise Gate that many brands outsource and has been rebadged as their own mini-Noise Gate ? It's either a corporation's lazy way of not designing their own Noise Gate from scratch in-house or it''s a testament to the design & effectiveness of what the pedal is capable of doing for any configuration of gear. Optimistically looking forward to dropping it into the chain of pedals and hearing the results. It should be all I need to isolate & eliminate the worst of the undesirable noise(s) & even feedback.
@DerekPaulGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Jim Camp thanks for the comment Jim, I’m under the same impression that a lot of the pedals are mass produced and rebadged and there seem to be more and more of them competing with each other using the same product, having said that as long as the quality of the pedals exist it gives the buyer an opportunity to spend less on products they want, I like your way of looking at it, would you say the Mooer one performs exactly the same as it does look the same? Cheers and stay well Jim
@jimcamp24234 жыл бұрын
@@DerekPaulGuitar From the KZbin reviews available, I think the rebranding and same performance for identically designed products is what we should expect. That said, this specific brand & product has a switch for Hard/Soft engagement of the Noise Gate at whatever Threshold was dialed in with the single knob. This design, from my research, ranges in price from $ 22-90. The next level of control is the Electro-Harmonix Silencer & TC Electronic Sentry Noise Gate, that are $ 70-130. It has 2 additional knobs for damp & decay control. That from watching reviews is the tail of when the Noise Gate opens & closes. They also have an app that makes it compatible with a smartphone and you can reshape with tone prints. I think that's a little more in depth than what I want to spend time trying to dial in a Noise Gate for control. Who knows though, maybe I would prefer it to be that tweak-able ? Electro-Harmonix as well has a Silencer product that is about $ 70 item with the 3 knob control, no tone print/app feature. Both the TC Electronic & Electro-Harmonix has the Effects Loop Return & Send as well as thru the Amp's front Input direct to the preamp as Input-Output 1/4 inch plug recepticles. Not sure what that buys anyone in terms of how it works ? Guess it has more to do with whether the amp has an effects loop I'm wondering if the Rowin could be modded with a smaller knob pot to replace the Hard/Soft switch ? Adding the Damp & Decay knob control like the more expensive NG pedals ? Not that I'd ever mod it that way. Sorry for the long response, these pedals are addicting to try to figure out.
@DerekPaulGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Jim Camp it’s incredible what you learn when talking to people as I. Ever knew how in depth noise gates went, the ability to shape the tone with an app in so far advanced, but of course these days people want options and love the smartphone connectivity, I can’t say it’s for me as I’m more analogue but I get it, I can’t see it being too difficult to mod (might even be fun to do) and there are even companies that have build your own pedal kits now (I’m thinking of trying that) gives you an introduction into how these things go together and what a tone circuit is, what I usually do is look at all the specific pedals and see what the reviews are and as you say they can be largely the same rebranded pedal, cheers

@@DerekPaulGuitar Mine arrived today and I immediately tested it. It even silences a cheap wireless system that I used as a patch cable between the Noise Gate & the Distortion pedals. This unit is basic for features, but adequately effective none the less. The red LED light is red & stays red when the NG is on as enabled or off for the True Bypass. With the TC Electronic Sentry, I think that NG pedal, the light goes from red to green as the Threshold is reached and the guitar is played. So that feature seems to assist in dialing the NG pedal threshold and when the damp & decay control aspect of the Noise Gate opens & closes. Anyway, I'd definitely recommend this pedal for solid basic operation in a NG pedal. It's not really a sexy pedal for being an effect sound, but it just quiets down noise interference in the chain of pedals and that's sexy when a quiet amp at idle is the goal. It's like having an instant on & off muzzle for unwanted noise as it's amp effect. Now I can drive the amp at higher volume and not have to listen to hissy white noise when the guitar isn't playing. It also raises the threshold for any feedback that might creep into an idle guitar during a practice session.

Does the pedal help with unwanted string noise and string muting?
@DerekPaulGuitar4 жыл бұрын
Le Talentless Cult hi, thanks for the comment, it won’t help with unwanted string noise or string muting, unless you had the threshold set extreme but it’s not really designed for that, in short it won’t, cheers

@@DerekPaulGuitar thanks I've just been having trouble keeping smy strings muted whilst trying to learn how to start soloing

It’s a tricky thing to train your right hand to dampen the strings you don’t play but with practice you’ll get there man, cheers

@@DerekPaulGuitar thanks. it's a lame question sorry but what i wanted to know is it's my first pedal. i always used multieffects. so i have to buy the power supplies for it right? can u suggest one?
@DerekPaulGuitar3 жыл бұрын
@@PrantikNath Not lame at all, if you don't know you don't know :) any 9v pedal power supply will do (for a pedal board you'd need a pedal power supply block ideally) but for one pedal it'll cost you less than $10, Sweetwater has this for $10, D'Addario YS12-090050U cheers

@@DerekPaulGuitar thanks! But if I want to use 3-4 more pedal in future in that case what should I buy? so that i don't have to change it if I buy some more pedals which i will do eventually.

@@PrantikNath hi, then you’re looking at something like this Truetone 1 SPOT PRO CS7 7, plenty of them out there, and you can also mount it on a pedal board :) cheers

Have this pedal sitting in my board right now to keep my fx loop quiet, and boy let me tell you. It works better than an NDA given to the family of a prostitute that was slain by a politician. Keeps her reaalll quiet. 7/10 ease of use but I wish you could do the 4 cable method like other noise reducer pedals
