Hey, um I don't even go here. I play country chickin pickin. I just wanted to say, I've never seen a gear review do things this scientifically. A purely technical approach to a pedal shoot out is so refreshing. Not a flowery adjective in sight. The graphs. The table on the left to keep us all on task. That's how you do shit.

Also not a metal guitarist. I’m a psychedelic guitarist of 30 years- Imagine Dave Gilmour’s playing got it on with Mark Knopfler’s playing and Buck Dharma’s playing, and the offspring came out mildly retarded. I run a front end pedal board containing 18-20 pedals, plus an effects loop containing a chorus, a delay, and a GE-7 EQ. Noise is a MAJOR issue. I just wanted to agree, however, that this is likely the most detailed, useful, and data-rich pedal shoot-out I’ve ever encountered, and you couldn’t have chosen a better category of pedal to give this type of analysis. Kudos, mate. Subscribed if only to support this quality of content-even if you never make another video what applies to me (though you probably will. Just because my music is aimed at folks on acid doesn’t mean that there isn’t a time and place on a trip to kick out the jams… besides: Don’t tell anyone, but Jerry Cantrell is also in roughly my top 6 to 8 guitarists.

Lichtlaerm Audio, the key and the gate, noise gate. one knob, set forget. does not ruin your cleans, its as if it is off. reacts to your playing. lead playing shines through. best noise gate on the planet ! made by a metalhead for metalheads. built in volume/signal booster, if required, evens out your effects loop if needed, or increase a few decibels for long cable runs or just because you can. I'll never look back.

I was looking at this but as I am just a home player I couldn’t justify the cost. Ended up with a Sentry and it works great for what I do. If I had more of a budget though, the Lichtlaerm would have been my choice.

Honestly, one of the best reviews of anything guitar related I've ever seen on KZbin. Fantastic job not only presenting the information in a highly effective way, but also showing a deep understanding of what you were testing. Thank you for making an ACTUAL review and not just a sales pitch like 99% of the gear related channels on here.

What an amazing video thanks so much man. I ended up buying a Boss NS2 today, tried it out in the store and it works perfectly for what I need (4 cable method)
@posthard-coreshorts8 ай бұрын
Actually there's a hidden mode on the Boss NS2. Plug it in as normal, set it to mute, disengage the pedal, and you'll see the reduction light is still on but you're signal is still coming through, and then you'll also notice the difference in how it gates the signal, the normal way is better but I found this method completely by accident. Hope this helps

I like your test measurement, but I wonder how it compares to the other video test method? We published a spreadsheet with our findings. I would be willing to give read access so we can compare your testing to ours...

I have tried the silencer (no good), the MXR (also no good and I'm a MXR fan-boy so was pretty bummed) and then used a NS2 for years (which was OK). Finally, I latched onto Stone Deaf FX "Noise Reaper". Unbelievably good - similar to the ISP in that it only has one knob but works very very well indeed (in the FX loop). As I tend to mostly play single coil Teles into an Orange Rockerverb 50, I was keen to reduce or eliminate the hiss as much as possible. Noise Reaper works perfectly. Great comparison and this objectively proved to me my anecdotal findings on the ones I had used in the past.

I am a bass player with a solid state amp and no effects loop, but I’ve got a tube compressor with the gain dimed, a drive, and a boost, all of which introduce a ton of a feedback and noise. I’ve been using a Deci-Mate at the end of my tiny pedalboard’s signal chain, right in front of the amp, but I haven’t been happy with the tracking/response time on higher threshold settings as it seems to choke the notes out, if I don’t set it JUST right it sounds like my preamp battery is dying. Not sure where I’m gonna go from here as none of these seem ideal for my uses, or at least not enough to drop over a hundred dollars on as an experiment.

Im pretty certain that the ISP has noise reduction as well. Meaning that when the gate opens, it filters hiss and 60 cycle hum from the flowing signal. This is a feature going all the way back to the HUSH noise reduction devices of Rocktron. Buck Waller being high up in both of these companies, taking care of us guitarists for decades. Maybe other pedals have NR as well?
@mofongotron4 ай бұрын
I BELIEVE only their new unit (Hum Extractor + Decimator) actively filters 60 cycle hum (and its associated high order harmonics).

@ManBunMetalHead2 ай бұрын
i don't have any experience using noise gates on bass, but the decimator II would probably work good. The Darkglass NSG is specifically made for bass, so that might be something worth looking into.
@francescodamico79032 ай бұрын
But one question: why you didn't try the toneprint mode on the Sentry ? And maybe check how it goes designing the parameters to your needs and prefernces ?
@ManBunMetalHead2 ай бұрын
the video was intended as an out of the box experience. i don't think it should be necessary to get your phone out to adjust a noise gate. with other pedals like delays, reverbs, and choruses it makes sense.
@francescodamico79032 ай бұрын
@@ManBunMetalHead actually what i meant is that it has a 3 positions switch, one of those is "toneprint" where something is already loaded from the factory (don't need your phone). Since it is an analog but digitally controlled device, with multiband gate (so actually it is 3 gates in one) the app could be useful to try ... but i understand your intention. I have some toneprints pedals (delay reverb and chorus) but never loaded nothing in the toneprint slot. So i understand you ... but the switch in that position sometimes may happen :-) But your review still is the best i've ever seen.

Wow what a great Video in a Time where i actually needed to decide which Gate i want or need! Im going for the Sentry. But i have a question. My Setup is mostly pure digital using a HX Stomp. I want a Gate Pedal so i can have more then the maximal effects on my HX. Meaning, I go Guitar In HX Stomp -> (FXloop) FXsend to OD Pedal into Gate Pedal to FXreturn -> HX Distortions -> HX Clean Amp -> Some HX Delays Reverbs -> HX IR Meanwhile still using the HX build in global Gate which doesnt have such good attack. I want to do this so i can disable the FXloop (which will have the Gate and an OverDrive) and the HX-Distortion to get a Clean Tone. So i can disable the OD and Gate with only a Press on the HX which turns the FX loop on and off. And i also can have my Bass setup by just not using the FX loop. You think i can use the Sentry like this? Like, Clean Guitar from FX Send into sentry, out to OD, back into Sentry back into FXreturn? Great Video man. Very well Made !

I turn a lot my volume pot on the guitar to get clean sounds and in between… Does the BOSS work for that or does it cut off the signal when turning down the volume pot? Which one can handle that?
@CosmicWaltz73 ай бұрын
Honestly, a gate affects that quite a bit. I use a Sentry now, and it's a bit better about it than the NS2 or Silencer, but it will definitely cut your signal tails faster the lower you set your volume. What I do instead is use a volume pedal in the loop of the gate. Basically, the gate reads the full signal of the clean guitar to know where to close the gate, the volume pedal affects how much of that signal goes into the next effect just like a volume pot on the guitar, but the gate only cuts volume based on original the input signal. That's how I use a fuzz as an overdrive with a noise gate, and I can use the volume pedal almost like a gain knob for it.

As someone who deals with SEVERE noise issues at home, a noise gate shootout is woefully incomplete without what I believe to be the best guitar noise mitigation product on the market: the ISP Hum Extractor + Decimator.
