On the legal troubles, its pretty simple to explain what ArcSys still had the rights to Sammy did not publish the first GG game so the IP & that cast was free game, but characters like Dizzy or Slayer who were added later was Sammy/Sega stuff. Some cast though were still ArcSys through my favorite thing LEGAL LOOPHOLES BABY You see for example That Man physically first appeared in the games in GGX Plus storymode and more heavily in GGXX, but he was first name dropped in GGML & seen earlier in the Ky lightnovel, which also is the first appearance of Raven which is how he is also able to be in this game despite first being properly named & shown only later in GGXX for the gamers. Now there is 1 thing I would like to talk about, Accent Core as it is the real interesting stuff. ArcSys only got the full rights back to GG in 2011, so how did they make new versions of X/XX in 2006 especially when it was NOT published by Sega/Sammy? Thats a mystery baby

While everyone's begging for Dizzy to come back _-(again)-_ , here I am, the lone faithful soldier championing for the odd Doctor Paradigm in fighting game form. Also, "Diva" is just the theme for Valentine's final form, her first theme was "The Mask does Not Laugh", which is still a banger in it's own right and a lot of her "DNA" can still be felt in her successors (at least in Xrd). And since early Blazblue took a lot of cues from GG, that means "Sol's dead wife"-type replicas also in some form inspired "Ragna's little sister"-clones. Lastly, I'd love to see the series experiment in this odd formula again, though in all honesty I wouldn't really mind a full on 4-man arena fighter with Overture controls (basically mixing it with Isuka)

Probably the best video introduction to the game for a Guilty Gear fan looking into Guilty Gear 2. Thanks for making this video as this game was the black sheep of the series for a long time. Newer audiences are definitely doing a good job finding the core gameplay loop which contains a somewhat solid 3d Action game in it. I wish Arc System Works would revisit 3D action someday but at this point the closest we will get to Overture 2 is probably something like Vavarion; which being made by one of the developers of GG2 with similar looking movement and combat but with no RTS mechanics.

There's something amusing about Guilty Gear becoming popular and escaping out of that niche hell while KOF and SNK's franchises are still stuck there. Not even having Terry in smash helped, and I honestly doubt the SF6 SNK guests will help at all. The thing with SNK is that despite most of their fanbase being located in Latin America, it's mainly for KoF and Metal Slug, while some Fatal Fury games like Real Bout Special are popular, we are talking about very old games, most people are perfectly fine still playing KoF '98 and 2002, and while Latin America has been a growing market, I don't see a lot of people playing KoF XV aside from hard-core players I think SNK is doing everything they can for their games to become hits in the U.S., all of the major marketing for KoF XV was in English, there weren't any trailers in Spanish or Portuguese (though at least the games have subtitles in multiple languages), City of the Wolves will be dubbed into English, but not on other languages, which I can understand, dubbing is expensive, but games like Breath of the Wild/Tears of the Kingdom, Final Fantasy XVI and Mortal Kombat X/11/1 have Latin American Spanish dubs I don't know if SNK can achieve what ArcSys managed to do. Don't know if part of the problem is that KoF's characters aren't as appealing as the ones from Guilty Gear or if game's story is confusing for newcomers and at this point I don't think rebooting KoF would be well received by long-time fans

I love when spin offs introduce characters that are then added to the main line games, like Sin/Raven to Xrd (sure Raven was in the canon before but obviously never been playable before GG2 Overture), or Momiji in Ninja Gaiden DS getting added to subsequent DOA/NG games, or Es from XBlaze being added to Blazblue Central Fiction. I guess SF did that often with Final Fight characters, but SF never really had many spin-offs if you don't count the FF games, which don't often incorporate characters that originally appeared in SF first, so I kinda don't count the FF games as "SF spin offs".

Hello guile, sorry for my bad english because i dont know if you take requests but by seeing you love obscure fgs i recomend you to check the Dual Blades and its sequels Slashers and Dual Souls Dual Blades is a *Turkish* indie fg released on the *gameboy advance* , and one of the 5 gba games with M rating. By the gameplay you could say that is a mix between SamSho, SF3 and Guilty Gear, with things such as a roman cancel, parry, burst, super select and fatalities. The game also have an Arcade, training, survival, score attack, time attack and a *combo challenge / tutorial for a gba* and *A COMMAND LIST THAT EXPLAINS ALL SPECIALS AND UNIVERSAL MECHANICHS* , something that other gba fgs such as ggx, sfa3 and tekken didnt had for the console (and even other consoles). About the gameplay most characters have simple inputs shuch as in Akatsuki, with them being quarter circles, down down, foward down and back foward (but they're not charge moves). The buttons are slash (kinda like a medium slash from sam sho, that you can do a 3 frame jab if you input foward too), big slash ( heavy slash, also grab foes if you press foward while close), kick ( a medium attack that if you input foward will be a 3 frame kick too) and the power button. The power button is special because if you tap two times you do a taunt that gains meter, and if you press power + slash you do an overhead. Also all supers are done with this button. The gimmicks of this game are pretty intersting too, let me explain. There is a parry in this game that works exactly like sf3, input foward before getting hit (that is called block, because the game calls standart blocking guarding for some reason). Recovery, the roman cancel is done by pressing both slash + big slash while perfoming a move ( and costs some meter ). The burst is called breaker and is done by pressing back + slash + big slash while taking damage (costs a full meter bar). You can dash and back dash by pressing one of the side buttons two times. Now the plot and characters are very unique in my opinion. The setting is a more *realistic take of the middle age* , but unhapply i didnt finished the arcade mode yet. The cast is composed of: Kanae and Brendan are the shotos with all the toolkit of one and command grabs. She is a samurai wanting revenge and he is an adventurer who loves danger (His motto is nothing venture nothing gain) and simps for all women in the game. Andre is a templar knight who is also a parry/ big body and maybe a grappler ( he is slow and have a follow up to his throw ). His taunt also throw a rose like dudley, and is a insanely good projectile. He fights to save his kingdom from the lizard people. Efe is an ottoman warrior and a zoner with his high low mixup of projectiles. He fights for Türkiye as far as I know. Rungard is also a zoner who cant dash but have a special teleport. He have fire, eletric and ice projectiles that give you unfair hit stun (he is a psycho who wants to destroy the world, thats it). He is based in a viking/ celtic sorcerer probaly. Shin is a rushdown zoner with the most damaging and safest projectile in the game, its insane diagonal range is impossible to jump or crouch over it. To his design he is green testament who uses crows who loves the blood of a slit throat and people screaming ☠️ (Not even The Boys have that shi ) Nagashapa is an elderly Mongolian sorceress and farmer, who give you all kind of curses like no jump, no specials and backwards controller. She uses ghosts for those attacks. And we have Jaman, one of the lizard man that attacks Andre's kingdom. He looks like a mix between an armadillo, akuma and blanca and plays exactly like those with the exception of summoning lizards for his attacks (also a 1 frame active overhead aimed at the foe). Well, that its Dual Blades for today. I could say something about the sequels but thats another history. Also sorry for the big text.

I'm older that you so I experienced this at launch day as a huge Guilty Gear fan in 2008. When the game was released me and some friends had the idea that the title was named "Guilty Gear 2: Overture" because it was that, an overture, so Arcsys could experiment with the franchise with a weird little game as a world/lore introduction to a hypothetical "real" Guilty Gear 2 that was gonna be a fighting game. I'm pretty sure a lot of people got that concept with this game at the time. We also knew about the copyright hellish issues that Guilty Gear had with Sega but I didn't fully understand how it works, so this was a surprise. I don't exactly know how to explain this, but for me this game feels like a high budget Doujin game... like if the guys who did Crucis Fatal Fake made a Guilty Gear fangame and sold this on Comiket on a DVD-R. It's the mix of the weird gameplay concept, the new characters and most importantly how the 3D models looks. Feels like something unofficial, but it is fucking Guilty Gear 2 for some reason. The game is fine, but yeah, it was mostly hated by the community. As you said, this was way before League of Legends so for most of my friends who like GG this was totally out of place or just a meme. I appreciate Ishiwatari for trying something different but the game is honestly not for me. It's super cheap on Steam and the online still works as you said, so at least give it a try.
@chazmaru95835 ай бұрын
I remember exactly the same thing: this game was justified, probably as _copium_ by the fighting community (me included), as "not the real Guilty Gear 2" but just a prologue spin-off to the "real" Guilty Gear that would "obviously" be a fighting game. It also does not help that we had no idea about MOBA as the genre was way less mainstream back then and communities were more siloed. Like Guilewinquote says in the video, it was more commonly compared to the Musō/Warriors series. In hindsight, Arc System Works was way ahead of the curve (and their potential audience) with this idea.

My main contact with the game before your video was seeing the offhand comment in KBash's Fighters into 3D video, and Cvit mention of in in his Backlogg's description as an game not deserving attention. Probably not the most positive exposure. Then I saw some video of gameplay and tell myself "kinda curse looking for some of the movement, but it do look kinda fun". [ 04. ] -> Kurohyō: Ryū ga Gotoku duology (2010-2012, PSP) Another Japan exclusive duology, which is a spin-off of the Yakuza - Like A Dragon series by SEGA, and focuses on the more intricacies and mechanics of fighting more than the mainline games, and hence it outshines those and stands apart as its own formidable and wholesome entry in the franchise. Both games are awesome but its the sequel which prominently has the feature which I wanted to highlight, the ability to create our own character and be able to customise every single aspect of combat, whether that be what style of punches, what types of kicks, what type of grabs and what would be the counters and what would be the super moves from the available 20+ martial arts. So another super underrated and overlooked game which would be a great learning point in the Baki X Kengan game's character creator part, where we the player have total control to what moves, styles and combinations we want out of our fighter. And some of the more exclusive moves which will only be available when the in-game created character has a certain physical modification which mirror those of the characters from the manga/anime. Like if I wanted my created character to, I simply can't apply for Blast Core as Level 3 cuz my character won't have Superman Syndrome to execute it like Wakatsuki. So Superman Syndrome would be a unlockable modification available maybe after unlocking in-game or DLC. Other great examples to learn from - • Def Jam Vendetta (2003, PS2/GameCube) • Def Jam: Fight for NY (2004, PS2/PSP/GameCube/Xbox) -> Kurohyou Duology uses the same engine as this game since it was made by the same developers • The Con (2005, PSP) • WWE SmackDown! An obscure MMA fighting game which at its time got bad reviews and does have its flaws but it's strengths are undeniable. It has EXACTLY the kind of gameplay, effects, aspects and vibe that is required in a true, source-faithful and fan pleasing audience for a Kenganverse based or even Baki based fighting game. The brutality and tone in this game rivals that of Mortal Kombat but not much gore and not THAT graphic, and uses very real life accurate character models. But the knockouts ,bone breaking and limb snapping effects are very much in line with how fights are in Kengan and Baki, and should be rightfully expected in a faithful game

i think this game would best be described as an RTS still, it's not quite a MOBA. MOBAs dont tend to have the amount of unit micro that this does, especially not DOTA or league. however this is an excellent idea and there's a lot of people who miss the RTS genre, which died not just due to lack of entries, but also being really challenging to just pick up and play cuz of, yknow, the micro. i think an accessible revision of this concept would be, at absolute worst, a cult classic. i'd give it a shot for sure. also one of my favorite vids from you, i appreciate your attitude towards media and how deliberate you are with constructing a video and engaging with what you're covering. absolutely worth the wait c:

Still, the tower takeovers and the concept of a base to destroy IS very MOBA-esque. But yeah to be fair, the game is more of a allgemation of ideas.

The top down fight with that Man is kind of interesting to consider because it plays identically to some Nier Gestalt (and now, by extention Nier Automata and Furi) boss fights. A whole 3-4 years before Gestalt's release.

I always liked this game, It's kind of a lot all at once because every single mechanic is weirdly deep, like minions are a legit rts, melee fighting has a ton of moves and tech, movement is straight up drift racing, but once you get into the flow of it, it's a one of a kind and really fun game.

Guilty gear 2 was legitimately my first exposure to guilty gear. I remember absolutely nothing about it, except for the characters, and the fact that I hated playing it. I had this negative stigma around guilty gear as a whole, up until strive’s release. I saw all this positive press, and people praising it as the best in the franchise. I remembered my experience playing guilty gear 2, and put strive off as “just more anime slop.” (Actual thing I sent to my hardcore anime friend) Around the release of season 2 though, I saw a character that, in retrospect, changed my whole perception of the characters in the franchise, Ky. He looked so much different than his appearance in guilty gear 2, that I at first thought he was a different character. I legitimately saw lightning powers, and the cool cinematic that plays when you use RTL, and thought that was the coolest thing in a fighting game I had ever seen Lmao, I’m easy to please. I decided to bite the bullet, and try out strive (unfortunately the day before the release of season 2, and the $20 price cut, still mad about that.) That decision led to my investment in fighting games, and my heavy involvement in the FGC. So, legitimately, if it wasn’t for guilty gear 2, I probably never would’ve discovered my love for fighting games and the community. So, I guess an undeserved thank you is warranted for guilty gear 2.

This came out the year Brutal Legend was even announced and figured out a more robust Rock n Roll themed Action-RTS for consoles than Double Fine would two years later. Sure ArcSys had a history for fighting games, but I'd still call it a similar leap DF took from a platformer in terms of scope and stuff. And the game had a similar fate two years before BL by confusing reviewers and players, and being judged primarily on the campaign that was meant to be more an extended tutorial for multiplayer. I love history. Wonder how things might have gone if they weren't exclusive to Xbox back then, even. Cause honestly a bunch of weird games catch on, but a weird Xbox exclusive anime-style Japanese game like GG2 had no chance at all back then with what I even remember. Shudder to imagine the G4 skits.

[ 02. ] -> Tough: Dark Fight (2005, PS2) Another Japan exclusive manga video game, which is based on a relatively obscure fighting manga which at one point, and still is considered Baki’s rival. Strangely enough, the only great things about the game is everything else except the gameplay cuz it's too stiff and banal, there's no fun. But the art work, music and theme apparent from the opening screen, menu, character select screen, character profiles, stat graphs, and each characters’ respective bio displayed besides them on the character select game. Yes, it was a great missed opportunity. The game engine should have been from either Opus Corp or Eighting tbh.
