I find it pretty difficult to transcribe by ear these walking bass lines. One, because there’s just so many notes and it’s exhausting to try to figure out, and also because the tone of the acoustic bass doesn’t seem as prominent or loud as an electric bass would. 😕

I used to find transcribing by ear both difficult and time consuming, but after 40 years of playing, and learning where the notes reside on the fretboard, I can literally follow, one or two notes, behind the player I'm following along with. It takes nothing more than plenty of practice, plenty of mistakes, but sticking to what you set out to both be able to do and to learn how to do it.

Hey James how do you play it on the double bass? I see the tab shows a 3 fret on the low fifth string which doesn't exist on the double bass? I am new to the big fiddle so it makes me wonder🤔

@@webrambler88 5 on the b string (the fifth string) is E note so he probably just played an open E ( fourth string)

@@webrambler88 on double bass, its pretty common to tune your low E string down depending on what song youre playing. its not as common in jazz, more of a classical thing. paul chambers was classically trained though, so he wouldve been familiar with that technique. id guess he tuned his E down to a D (aka drop D) because the song is in D minor.

I'm learning to listen to jazz you need good speakers with bass. Tried listening at work with a small speaker and if i tried to make out the bassline I'd be slowing myself down lol.

Do upright bass players often extend lines all on the G string like that? Even though I'm learning jazz bass, it feels kind of awkward to me, so I think I'll just play higher up on the fretboard a lot. But still, great video and this will help me a ton! Thank you!

Be careful of that Bb. Because this is modal, the Dm7 (9,11,13) has a B natural in it, so you should think about The Dm7 as a D Dorian chord, and then Eb Dorian.If the pianist plays the typical 'so what chord" (stacked 4ths plus a third - D, G, D, G, B) then the Bb in solos and walking will clash (not that it can't be used for effect).

This is an amazing cover! I love this bassline so much. It just fits so well with what's going on. Also, that bass looks beautiful. What EQ settings and/or effects did you use to get that sound? I love that tone, and as someone who plays in a jazz band, I can't figure out the ideal tone to emulate upright but also stay kinda electric-y.

Thank you I used Pensa Bass. I don't have this instrument right now and I don't really remember what settings I used. I only remember using the most basic settings. Sorry for not being able to help you much.

Oh man another one. I'm sorry but today I've found the formula for smokeless gun powder. The melody on the bridge is wrong, if you check the original it actually goes to the Maj seventh instead. I'm guessing that I'm going to find the same mistake in a variety of recordings, famous ones included. I got to confirm it with melodyne cause I also heard it wrong for 45 years. Check it out and let me know your conclusion. See you.
