It always helps to have friends around, but I think that fundamentally, the design of Amsterdam encourages creativity, socializing, and living your best life. I've often talked to my wife about how we have a lot of friends back in Canada, especially in Toronto, but we would very rarely see them. Here in Amsterdam, while we have fewer friends, we see them more often. When everyone can meet up and it's only a 15 minute bike ride, or when you're out on a walk to do some utterly normal tasks like buying groceries and you run into a friend on the street, it's just so much easier to be social. Plus of course living in a beautiful walkable city, instead of a concrete jungle full of extremely loud automobiles seen only through the windshield, makes it fundamentally more enjoyable to be outside and to go places. As Philosophy Tube said in a recent video, the environment you live in shapes your behaviour and your mental processes (she is the philosophical term "sensitivities"), which is why the world really does need more human-scale walkable places. Welcome back to Amsterdam.

Ha, I was thinking about this as well! "if Not Just Bikes thought me anything, its that it is not about amsterdam being a small european city, its about amsterdam being designed to meet people in the streets.'' And there you are in the comments, lol.

One can learn to live well in many locations. And certainly having family and friends nearby helps. One of the greatest advantages of living in southern California for me, after having lived in seven other states in the U.S., is such easy access to beautiful outdoor settings with year-round great weather. There are no light work weeks as a career scientist, but you learn to incorporate good living into the schedule when so many great options surround you. Just about every single day, surfing, hiking, boating, running, swimming, kayaking, fishing, tennis, skiing, golf, and other activities are on the menu. So glad you found yours, Tom. Cheers.

The trap of alcohol and drugs is a very serious problem in our industry, mental health problems too, been doing this 46 years and have lost count of how many colleagues I’ve lost, I survived the game but it was close with me too, I lost every girlfriend, never married or had kids and now it’s way too late, people just don’t think enough about the future, then all of a sudden your there, with nothing real to show for all the work….paying the price now but at least I’m still alive

Glad to see that you're almost taking it a bit easier. What's the chance of you one day just showing us you creating a big sonic piece using most of you synths? Some kind of groove music, for example. It would be fun.

Hello Tom, I think thats a decent decision of yours. And i totally agree...every now and then you need some time - also for inspiration and of course for other people in your life, its not just about work at all. I thank you so much for your time and effort creating this video content here - I absolutely find it very helpful. All the best for you! Kind regards :)

A healthy work/life balance is so important. I feel like it's a struggle for musicians, because music is such an important part of our life. It's difficult to separate ourselves from it and enjoy being away from it.

LA can really burn you out. It’s actually a very tough place to live. It’s huge, there’s no escape, everyone’s there to work, and if you have friends on the other side of the city then it’s pretty guaranteed you’ll never see them because of the traffic The good news is now post covid composers don’t necessary need to live in LA to succeed. I have a real love / hate relationship with LA, and I’m glad you’re finally finding a better balance Tom! We’ll catch up eventually!

It seems like there is still pressure to sound like this composer or that film score, especially with temp scores etc. How do you find the courage and commitment-to-self to chart your own path in film composition?
