your simplification that REVIT is just geometry with spreadsheets attributes attached to it is the best succint explanation

Everyone I know of who works with complex custom facades and artworks use Rhino and a ton of scripts. Big companies who churn out the same buildings over and over with minor tweaks use Revit. It seems like you can't really make software both user-friendly and expand its creative potential. P!=NP. The more custom, the more unique your design is, the more you are going to need to get under the hood of it all.

I’ve worked with Archicad BIM for over 22 Years, starting in 2000 with Version 7, and my projects are never the same. BIM is for the seasoned architect. Before you draw the first line, you already know the Site, Structural, Mechanical, HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical assembles, and the construction height, width, and breadth of its depth, all within a virtual 3D reality, along with all the specifications of its assemblies.

Yassss. You can't design in BIM. I hate how architecture firms want new hirees to be a BIM ninja. I can good in autocad and sketchup. How is that not enough?

As a programmer that just started developing a BIM of my own early this year I find your vision and opinions very similar to mine which is quite a surprise given that my architect friends that I tried to share my ideas with wouldn't get it at all. My programmer friends do get it but nobody has the guts to enter the project with me (they all think it's too much work). Anyway give me a shout if you feel like it would be worthwhile to exchange some ideas or collaborate in any way.

Now lets get the BIM deliverable in drawings contracts and improve business practice for generations to come!

We have always looked to capitalism to find the solutions, whatever the industry. This system has served us well when you have a fair and level playing field. Platforms provide efficient structures until a monopoly is achieved, then the drivers change, and the outcomes are skewed. The AEC supply chains need a trusted and transparent purpose-driven, data sharing collaborative framework that will hopefully provide the next generation of efficient platform solutions to benefit society, the client and those who produce the real work. All stakeholders sharing data improve standards, integrate sustainable outcomes and achieve a collective intelligence. Importantly, I believe this system would remove the barriers the BIM level 3 or alternative. There is definitely a growing movement in this direction, do you see it coming soon?

@@ProArchitecture Excellent news, we have started creating a library of elements and templates for the residential sector in Catia ready to share with other like minded teams on a collaborative platform. Let me know if you need a test bed as our Design and Build projects are delivered end-to-end.

World market, or at least eu should force software developers to fully support one fully compatible format (ifc of course is probably closest to this) where some minimal level of metadata should be determined. I'm talking about fully workable format, not some half baked thing, which needs a loo of post processing, clean ups etc. I think Autodesk as a world "leader" doing in this section a lot less than it should, where some others trying to push universal exchange format much further. This is where governments should do their thing, as mentioned. This is only way, eu should be starting point for global market. At the same time, i think it would be also good idea to standardise layer management inside od the projects, templates, schedules etc.

BIM is a marking system by Autodesk to sell a Parametrics modeler Revit because no one would buy it when it was called a parametric modeler.

The biggest downfall of BIM is for the owner in my opinion. If you truly invest in going this route (as the client), you should receive a model with which you can ultimately control and manage your facility, as well as be able to receive real time data, etc. Thus I still use vanilla AutoCAD as my mainstay for my custom home design business.

Do we need BIM, if we only work on small scale projects? For example some family homes, etc. My opinion is that using it for this purpose will be overkill.

You need project management, communication, and tools (ie software) that are available to you. BIM is a garbage acronym trying to replace all of the above.
@ramia5169
@ramia5169 2 жыл бұрын
You should consider what generative design is bringing to that, if your goal is to achieve efficiency. BIM is practical in larger projects due to their complexity, but there are still answers for efficiency through technology for a SFH development. The future in technology for AEC is about looking at tools as a tech stack, and picking the right one to suit your team abilities. Many tools are being built by brilliant minds tackling the inefficiencies that exist.

BIM is a mistake. The mistake being the creation of yet another acronym for something we already have. The “process” is called project management. The “3D design” already existed with CAD. Computer AIDED design. The software now does 3D? Great I’ll keep using CAD but with 3D capabilities. You’d like to automate some of the process? Great I’ll have the computer aide me with that as well. The notion that BIM brings anything new is simply not true, except that it brings new associations and accreditation’s to muddy the water for people yet again. There is no switch to BIM just like there wasn’t a real switch from drafting by hand to using computers. One simply is faster and so logically a better choice. New skill sets yes, new “Process” ? 😂

BIM is a database, not a drawing. 3D CAD vs. BIM is night and day
@NeoKnight9
@NeoKnight9 4 жыл бұрын
@@DoggieB92 Right so a database as in it’s information. Even then, there’s an issue with calling it that. Try going into an engineering firm and tell them we will now be creating databases. My point is, to be clear, that making another acronym isn’t necessary. “BIM” will only delay the change. Change being: shift to better sharing of information as early as possible to make the construction process more efficient. When we “design” we consider things and provide solutions. When a computer helps it aides. Straight definitions here. CAD is encompasses designing with the help of computers (be it generative or database building) no need for another acronym.
