I describe my boyfriend's style as Pirate Frat Boy. We've got a literal pirate flag, bumper stickers, bluegrass concert posters, beer bottles and a massive painting he got at a yard sale in Wyoming he refers to as Cocaine Mountain. He also insists on keeping his health insurance card sitting out on his bedside table. Prayers welcomed.

When my husband and I were engaged, he bought an bright blue abstract canvas for $50 from a junkie in an alley… my decor is neutrals and greens 😭 every time we moved, he kept telling me “Barn Door will look great in x place!” And then it would end up in a closet and resurface the next time we moved. I also put a beach painting his parents spent way too much money on in the guest bathroom, probably offended several people in the process haha.

When I remember my first apartment, it really makes me laugh. My roommate and I had scored all this furniture for free--it had been in a nightclub downtown (that in itself sounds gross, right?), but the owner wasn't using it anymore. In my mind I was going for a New Orleans/Goth kind of vibe, but it was actually more granny than anything else. There was a lot of brocade, florals, antiques, and a bit of lace. LOL. Going to design school completely changed my aesthetic. Now I don't know how I'd describe my house, but it still has antiques with a helping of Asian--Paige would def approve. Fortunately my husband doesn't have a strong opinion--with him, the issues have more to do with function than looks per se, which is workable for sure. And there are a few things he dislikes that I don't have a strong opinion about--e.g. he hates it when glass cabinets have lights inside--so I'm like, fine. He's not from the US, so I dodged that sports memorabilia bullet!!

When we first got together, my partner and I would brainstorm and figure out how to make our place feel like both of us, but I'd take the lead on integrating our styles. When I presented my final edit, he used to second-guess my choices and I'd pick my battles... on the things I let him 'win', he'd inevitably say "you may have been right about [x, y, z]." Now I run things by him mostly to think aloud and if he raises some good points, great, but if not, he says 'I can't envision it but you can and I believe you. Do it." 😂 We move every few years so by now, we've got a routine and our place always looks like both of us. Tastefully.

The inability of a man to picture what a final product will look like can get so frustrating though lol. the tip with the unloved things from the inlavs, i dont think its a good tip. just tell them that you don´t love the items, that you appreciate the thought but its not your taste, or from the beginning exclude interior stuf from the gift list, or just with prior consultation. maby its the honest german in me, but they will never understand what you actually like, and they will be lied to, its dishonest and thats not good. there might be some discussion, some hurt feelings, but in the long run it will be better for all sides.

I graciously told him thats great and proceeded to buy the exact recliner he wanted but I had it done in an amazing neutral fabric and bought the most adorable throw blanket and pillow for it. @@karenholmes6565 There’s a difference between secondhand and affordable though - a lot of the thrifted and vintage pieces she talks about would be super expensive for a young person (in her college dorm vid she recommended architect-style desk lamps from Etsy; they were all over $80, some over $100). Authentic vintage rugs and original artwork are another common recommendation. Plus she’s got the benefit of living in larger cities, which tend to have more options for thrifting. No hate to Paige, I really love her style - but I wouldn’t describe it as affordable

@@sam_ben18 In my experience finding decor items on the cheap is really easy. About 15 yrs ago I owned a collectibles shop on the internet. I was in college when I was operating it as side business. Here are some old timey recommendations for finding unique, quirky, cheap items. 1. Yard sales - people sell collectible and valuable things at yard sales all of the time, having no clue what something is worth. 2. Church rummage sales - same idea as the yard sales. 3. Live auctions - I don't know if this is a feasible way to acquire object, because auctions might all be digitized now because of the pandemic, but there were times I picked up entire boxes full of odds and ends for the minimum bid price, which was 2 dollars. They basically just want to get rid of entire lots and practically give things away. I picked up items I later sold for hundreds because something in the box was buried and valuable. 4. Estate sales - if you go to an estate sale near the end of it you can often pick up deals. You won't get the highly valued objects, as those are probably picked over. But near the end of the day they start slashing the prices because they want to get as much sold as possible. 5 Consignment stores/private thrift stores will often have tag sales, slashing the prices on items because they need to move merch. 6. Charity thrift stores - if you are looking for decor and it doesn't have to be vintage or antique, charity stores often sell ordinary decor items for reasonable prices. 7. Flea markets are one of the best ways to find decor items. 8. Your parent's basement is a good place to find things your parents do not like enough to use, but can't bring themselves to throw away. This also goes for aunts and uncles, and grandparents. I would love to give my nieces and nephews things if they asked for them. I have a garage filled with stuff too nice to trash or give away to charity, but I have no use for it currently. All of the things I mentioned above you can also haggle the prices down if you do it without being obnoxious about it. When you are young and need to decorate you cannot be too choosy, but you can pick up really cool, unique things. I still have things I picked up at flea markets in my teens. I value them even though they aren't the most expensive. They remind me of those times in my life. You absolutely do not have to spend a lot of money to get good stuff. One last recommendation that I would make is that you can shop now on facebook marketplace. I currently need lamps. I have been keeping my eye on the local facebook marketplace. There are lots of really cool lamps for between 10 - 40 bucks. And on the 40 end they come in pairs. You might not get the sort of lamp you've got your heart set on, like an industrial Dazor lamp (which is what I am looking for), but you can find one that would work with your taste. You can find glassware, vases, dishes, and art locally on facebook marketplace. And you can find it dirt cheap if you are willing to wait and you aren't too picky.

Alright, Paige. I disagree on pulling out the MIL’s dishware when she comes over. It just encourages her. If she asks about it, just say “it didn’t fit our current aesthetic. Maybe when we get a different house. We still have it for when we’re ready for it.” It’s so much more honest and requires less work.

Agree with this take. I have a designated bin in a closet for crap family gave us that we can't trash but refuse to have out. Nobody has asked us about any of the stuff that's in there. So. And if they did, that'd be my answer. "Doesn't work with what we have going on."

To add to this, it's also ok to get rid of things people give you. If I kept every single thing someone gave me for forever, I would be so overwhelmed with stuff I don't need. If they ask about it there's ways to be kind and honest at the same time.

Agree. My MIL is a huge gift-giver. When she nails it, I tell her! If we don't care for it, we might keep it around for a while to see if we'll use it, but if we don't we pass it on. It's me, I'm the one with bad interior design. My friend was super controlling and fought me every step of the way. with. every. single. item. She hated my design. She wanted everything to be black. I wanted the keep with the blue and black our apartment already had, plus some grey towels and rugs. She HATED it. Thought it was the worst. We fought and fought about a fucking TOWEL for an hour in a Walmart. I've since moved out, so now I can design my own place with my apparently ugly decor. This time though, it'll be more a more vintage feel based on interior design from my favorite game. Whoever was on that dev team knew their shit with architecture and interior design. It's marvelous. The main colors will be a slightly lower saturation green for the walls, dark wood with a reddish tint for countertops, and dark brown woods for the cabinets. Not sure on the floor yet. The game uses a bunch of cool designs, so I'm still undecided. Gonna get some vintage feeling lights and fixtures. My glassware will be on display and is a green color similar to green beer bottles. I know it's bad, but it'll be for me. It's been well instilled into my head now how bad my design is, but now no one can complain about it because it'll be my space.

I think a lot of "interior design" enthusiasts shy away from figurines/ pop culture media related paraphernalia and it's such a missed opportunity. I mean, of course it can get out of hand or look tacky, don't get me wrong. It often does. But it can also greatly show the personality and interests of the people actually living in the home. Is it a good quality piece or a bad quality piece? Does it look cheap? Can we display it? Can we make it a focal point? Can lighting help accentuate it or mask it in a space? There's loads we can do to disperse the items and make them look sculptural/worthy of being displayed in the home. Especially if it means something to the homeowners, no?

My fiancé and I picked a color we both like, his is mauve (pink) and mine is chartreuse😂 we’re both into earth tones, I found a couple of vintage peony printed chairs that have the green & pink, I think choosing a more “toned down” version our favorite bold color, helps

In my opinion, the most important thing to consider is just be open to growing up a bit. You can compromise on sofas and bookcases but if you refuse to downsize or eliminate your room spanning hot wheels display, you're going to run into serious issues.

My hubby wanted to decorate with all Chicago sports stuff when we first moved in together. At first, I just tried to make it look nice, and it was fine in our 20s. Now I have books about the ‘85 Bears on the shelves and a framed front page of the Tribune from when the Cubs won in 2016. Feels like he’s still represented while fitting my style too.

I really like how you have addressed the issue of a mix of both people in the decor. I think many women just take over and the man has no say and sometimes the woman has bad taste but that’s how it is decorated. Some men do have good taste.

Maybe putting a cool looking, stylish blanket or textile over the top of it would minimize it's appearance while still making it useful, perhaps even a cute pillow or two. I think in another video Paige suggested something like this for unattractive couches.

I learned that respect goes along way. Its assumed the female in relationships is 'better' at decorating or has the better taste. Not always the case and beyond that everyone wants to feel at home and surrounded by things that they love or admire. I say don't be afraid to incorporate color when it comes to teams.. not like a locker room but you can play with tone and bring in supporting characters to neutral things either of you don't like. Its' all about balance and compromise. Great vid!

Agreed! My partner and I have very similar tastes but he has this specific love for antique beer signs. They’re cool, but just not my thing (unless it’s a basement which is unlikely to have where I live). After a while of my face saying no I realized it was hurting his feelings. So I now don’t just turn it out.. we choose the sign together.

I'm a huge Suns fan, but the purple and orange is tricky to style. I had a friend gift me coasters that had iconic Suns plays and I could see that working so well in many homes, and it goes great with my space, which is very mid-mod and girly.

My husband was so happy to have me after a hellish 30 year marriage, he let me buy anything in any style I liked. We had the money and boy did I spend it. I put hickory hard floors in, bought new furniture, dishes, pots and pans, redid the entire back yard, painted the interior and exterior put custom interior black doors in, and so much more. It was fabulous!

Salut Paige! The Pinterest and “no go” colour tricks are genius tips! I’ll definitely use that last one. I’m grateful to be with a partner that is just as much in design as I am and we both have common tastes. Our issue is more on the classic tropes of maximalism vs minimalism. I come from a traditional, brocante loving, hoarding family and love unusual and beautiful trinkets. My partner comes from a very functionalist family with the bare minimum and loves it clean and hustle free. And that’s when the arguments happen. 🙃 I like it minimal in terms of quantity and zen as well so I curate way more than before, yet it’s hard to fully combine both our approaches. I’ve used the tricks of hiding and rotating elements but he feels like it’s still too much at times. 👀 if you’ve got some tricks for that, I’m all ears! Also, I never comment but I follow your videos religiously, it’s been helpful, inspiring and entertaining. Merci! :)

This video brought up a philosophical question in me: Can bad (or good) taste for that matter be objectively and universally defined? And if yes, by what criteria? I am still searching for the answer to that one myself. One of life’s greater mysteries for sure!😊
@HeyyyitsBell
@HeyyyitsBell Жыл бұрын
I think you can tell that good aesthetic taste exists objectively by looking at extremes. You can look at a work by Damien Hirst and compare it to something by someone like Francisco Goya, for ex, and you instinctively know that the former is aesthetically magnitudes below the latter. Most people feel that instinctive aesthetic judgement, if the general dislike of Hirst I’ve seen is any indicator.
@LaFilleTerrible

There are characteristics that are universally pleasing like symmetry, order or balance. But there’s no such thing as a good or bad taste, there are only ways of seeing and perceiving - which are very much informed by your context and your education. Those led to certain standards which are now considered like “good taste” but are very much socio- and geo-centered. Unlearning acquired perceptions and taking some time to observe will help you find beauty in most things.

I had a partner who wanted a gamer chair, anime figurines displayed in the house, and anime and kpop posters displayed on the walls as well. It really doesn't go at all with my aesthetics which is more cabinet of curiosities. We ended up never living together and it was ok cause we were not meant for each others, but sometimes I think of him and how we would have handled living together if we were aright fit. Still have no idea. Though, my daughter and I surprisingly find it really easy to mis our aesthetics and she is a Blink who loves demon slayer. I think it's because she isn't really a poster person or own any figurine, she makes art herself about what she likes or inspired by it and displays it around the house, and her kid's touch does the magic.

I think ive always dominated my interior space because i am a maximalist with an art history degree and a background in visual art so my standards and aesthetics are just very specific, but my husband has come around to really love my style. Sometimes it used to hurt when my friends came over because they thought my place was more reflective of me than us, but it really was both of us because i never wanted my husband to feel like he had to live and like a hyper-feminine aesthetic and many choices i made, like dark wood tones throughout were heavily influenced by him. But now my husband wants to bring in more plants and i have to veto him.
