Hi Simon, I was just wondering whether it's an idea to introduce a 'dark mode' in your software. This because I puzzle a lot at night and the complete white background is quite bright. Of course I can adjust the brightness of my monitor, so it's not that big of a deal then, but I thought I would leave the suggestion!

There's a neat little trick I've found with anti-knight puzzles with a magic square center (though it wasn't really used in this particular puzzle): . . . Cells r3c5, r5c3, r5c7, and r7c5, must all be even, since all four of those cells 'see' all five odd numbers inside the magic square. IIRC, I used that trick on Sumanta's puzzle. It's situational, but can be very helpful under the right circumstances.
@IsYitzach4 жыл бұрын
You can rotate and flip magic squares to get different solutions. 4 rotations and 2 flips give 8 unique solutions to the 3x3 1-9 magic square. In all of those cases, the edges must be even, the center 5, and the corners the non-five odds. That is the information that he drops on the magic square in the first few seconds of the solve.

33:46 for me, great puzzle (as expected from Aad). one cool trick I spotted is at 25:52 (nice palindrome!) look at the 68 pair in r4c1. whichever number you put there, r1c2 has to match it so there's a 68 pair there too. that leaves only one possible spot to put a 2 into in box 1.

Bit of logic, 27:24. R8C3 means R6 columns 2&3 can't be 3&7 because that would rule-out both candidates for R8C3. So one of the row 6 numbers has to be something other than a 3 or a 7, and the only thing possible (as pencil marked) is a 5 in column 2.

One bit of logic I spotted early on that I was surprised Simon didn't see - at 9:11 when he pencil marks the 9s into column 1 & 3 of box 4 it instantly restricts the 9 in box 6 to row 6, columns 7 & 9. The same can be done in box 8 to restrict the 9s in box 2 to column 4, rows 2 and 3. This repeats with the 1s, but with slightly less efficacy as they are restricted to three positions in a square, not two.

I've noticed this a couple of times now, colouring a cell with a bulb black, grey or white makes the bulb disappear (the stick part remains). This is probably has to do with the way the bulb interacts with the color box. It seems the stick is place over the sudoku while the bulb is placed in the sudoku. Somehow this means the colour square with colouring is placed over the bulb instead of beneath it while simultaneously the alpha value of the black, grey and white colours is 1. My guess would be that it is a matter of fixing the alpha value of the black, grey and white values or rendering bulbs on top of the grid, but I'm already making too much assumptions as it is. It would really help if this is adjusted because the delete-key and the delete-button behave differently when in colouring mode. The delete-key removes numbers before colours while the delete-button removes the colouring square and not the numbers. There is an argument to be made to preserve this behaviour, but it does mean that hitting the white-key on the keyboard may remove some bulbs by accident. Still, I would like to remark that the webapp is very pleasing to look at and definitely my favourite when it comes to filling in sudokus. Good job!

Well, if the race is to have as few given digits as possible, then you can erase those and put a 5 on the left of the thermometer bulb and another 5 on the right of the tip. That is fives in r2c7 and r8c3. It isn't pretty, but it does have a unique solution.
@jdyerjdyer4 жыл бұрын
Great solve! Two quick questions. First, is there a way to fix the black, white, and gray colors on the web app so they don't hide puzzle elements such as the bulbs on the thermometers? (or sometimes the color, especially white, doesn't even show up on those squares in some puzzles??) Second, is there a reason the delete key on the keyboard doesn't work the same as the delete button on the screen? I've accidentally deleted many marks when trying to remove colors only. The keyboard one doesn't respect the current mode button selected, but obliterates numbers first, then pencil marks, and only when the cell is empty does it remove the color. Very frustrating. Thanks. Finally, a really cool feature that would be nice would be an annotation feature, such as tool-tip notes so that if you hover over a block it shows a note that the user could type into a box. For an experienced puzzler, this feature might not be necessary, or could slow them down, but being able to add or remove a note to the squares would be immensely helpful for keeping longer logic chains in mind. A simple input field below the buttons and an Add/Remove Note Button could be used for putting them in and removing them. As for how they are displayed, a hover effect would allow for longer text without obstructing the puzzle too much. Maybe a tiny star image in the corner of the square could denote that a note exists on that square. One specific instance I'd definitely use this for is in a killer sudoku where the cage could have quite a few values, but the values for certain combos are limited, while others are not. For example, say a cage could contain a 368 or a 279 or 356 possibility depending on other variables (as in greater than/less than cages), but the 3 in one cell can only be a 3 if another cell is a 5. Current notation could lead me to believe extra possibilities exist even though I've ruled them out when setting the possibilities. A simple note saying "This cell is only a 3 if the above cell is a 5." could help me remember the logic for later. I know I could use center marking for some and corner marking to indicate that, but even then there have been times where that made things even more confusing. The annotation would let me peruse other logic without having to hold this bit in my head. I'm not as good with holding a lot of numbers or running as quick mental math as you both. Another use case would be for being able to indicate excluded values, such as when you know a cell can't hold a 3, 6, or 5, but that still leaves 6 possibilities, too many, to write in, so adding a note to one or two cells in this manner might make it easy or quicker to see that logic later when it might be more useful. You could even maybe add an anti-mark feature that allows you to quickly note these such as a fifth mode. Maybe even add a switch to turn on or off this special feature so people that want it can have and use it, but for others it isn't in the way. This could be added to a settings panel where you could also add a light-mode/dark-mode switch. Sorry for the WOT, and thanks for considering these features.

That was fun, glad I took the time to solve it.

Would be cool to see puzzles with the constructors including other constraints such as renban, non-consecutive, argyle etc. as well.

I'm just sitting here, cheering you on, in a mildly frustrated way, to place the 1 that I've been staring at for 5 mins. But for what its worth, I love this channel to bits! :D

A lovely puzzle as ever indeed. I'm feeling echos of your "Graffiti-ing the Mona Lisa" sentiment towards myself though; two or three times in row I kept getting overeager and sloppy in my solve, and needing to backtrack fix my mistakes.

Hey Simon, I was wondering if you guys ever thought of adding either a button to display or a permanent display for the puzzle's rules to your website?

At last a non-symmetrical puzzle again. The Knight and Kings move constraints seemed quite boring after the first or second, because they're basically all the same. All the other symmetric ones feel a bit like half a sudoku when I watch the solve. Thanks for the great content.

in the comment i didn't find someone shouting about the 9 in R6 at 11:30 , cause there was only one option for place a 9 in this raw is this normal that at 19:00 there is a pattern of triple numbers ?

25:00 , looking at 2s, forgetting knights move constraint, moves around three corners, places 2 anyways :D glorious, fails however to place the 2 in the rightbottom box :D
