Anthony Crammen did indeed make his very first resin tumbler!!!!!! See that video here: • Making A Resin And Alc...
After a recent convo with Anthony Crammen about how much equipment, colorants, and stuff in general I've acquired just to make resin tumblers, I wanted to show a much easier, less stuff-oriented type of tumbler: the beginner-friendly Alcohol Ink Swirl Tumbler. So that's what this video is all about. The glitter, vinyl, acrylic ink, airbrush, waterslide, printable sticker paper, and holographic nail tape gods all laughed and laughed.
I've listed my recommended products below, but please use whatever you have and/or can source that's economical for you.

For the purposes of this video, I showed only the initial layer of resin and colors, but from that point, the cup should get at least one more layer of clear resin to protect everything. You can either give the tumbler a very light sanding (with, say, 120 grit) in between layers then clean the cup off and apply the next layer of resin, or you can spray in between layers with a clear matte or semi-gloss spray. I prefer Rustoleum, but Krylon works also. Hope this answers your question.

@Luxinda
@Luxinda Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! With regular resin, like I used in this video, i usually leave it overnight. It can take up to 12 hours to set up and be dry to the touch. With a fast-set resin like Mr Nola’s Glitter’s Speed Coat or Speedy Petey from DIY Epoxy, those cups will be dry to the touch in 2-3 hours. Hope this helps!

Love this! Super helpful! After the inks dry overnight do you apply a top coat of epoxy? How many coats do you do and how far apart do you apply them? Thanks for your help!
@Luxinda
@Luxinda Жыл бұрын
Thank you!! Yes, I’d apply at least one cover coat, but since it/they won’t change the look of the tumbler, I don’t include things like that in the video. If I’m using regular resin (not fast-set), I’ll let a layer set up overnight before adding another. If it’s a fast-set, then whatever the touch-time is for that resin. But that’s just me, and I don’t have to churn multiple cups out quickly, in which case additional layers could be added once the surface is tacky.

I have never done one yet. My question is, can you just put alcohol ink on with the tumbler and then just put the resin over it.
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 8 ай бұрын
@marianclennon yes, absolutely! Alcohol ink can be dropped on, dabbed on with a sponge or painted on. The thing to remember is whatever you do to apply alcohol ink, let it dry thoroughly on the tumbler before applying resin over it. You could also seal the inks on with clear spray paint, let that dry then apply the resin. Some folks always seal inks before resin, other people let the ink dry then put the resin on without sealing (it’s personal preference).

@Luxinda
@Luxinda 10 ай бұрын
Thank you!! If you’re starting with tumblers that already come in colors, that probably means there’s some sort of coating on them. In that case, just sand them first (80 grit sandpaper or sanding block should work fine), clean them, then add resin and alcohol inks like in the video. You can also sand them, clean, then spray paint them a different color before using any resin if you want. I would consider the first tumbler you use to be a test, and have fun with it! Hope this helps 😊

Great video! Just ordered my beginners kit. Quick question though, it looked like some resin was inside the lip of the tumbler. How would I clean that up or prevent it from happening? Do you have any tips?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Regarding resin getting inside the lip, you can use some painters tape inside the rim before you apply any resin, then pull the tape out before the resin sets up. Or, what I consider much easier is to clean off any resin after the cup is completely dry and set up by using the point of a craft knife. You can slip the point under the edge of any resin that’s inside the rim and simply flick it off - the resin doesn’t stick and will pop right off. Obviously you need to be careful not to scratch the resin that’s on the outside edge, so just go slowly. Everyone has their own preferred method, so you will need to do some experimenting and see what works best for you. Have fun!!!!

question. After you were done applying the alcohol inks to the tumbler did you seal it again? If so, how many times did you seal it?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda Ай бұрын
Yes, there’s always a layer or two of clear resin to seal everything once you have the design completed. I don’t usually show those in the videos because there’s nothing to see, and it won’t change the look of the cup design at all so it’s not very interesting to watch. But yes, depending on what’s on the tumbler (vinyl, chunky glitter, etc) it may take a few layers of clear to give a smooth glass-like finish to the whole thing.

@Luxinda
@Luxinda Жыл бұрын
Not at all, whatever you want to put on first will be perfect. The only "order" of things is to put all the colors on however you want to, and then add the white (altho, after you've added the white, hit it with heat, tilted it, and all of that, you can still add more color inks if you want to). It's an almost flawless method of decorating a tumbler.

Thinking of starting do you keep it turning over night
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 10 ай бұрын
I do, yes, but if you use the fast-set or hyper-fast-set epoxy resins available now, that’s really not necessary. In the case of this style of tumbler, using the regular 12- to 24-hour resin gives more swirling opportunity for the alcohol inks, so that’s what I usually do.
@MandiKaye
@MandiKaye 6 ай бұрын
How do you keep hills or bumps/craters from forming in the resin? I did one last night, and it is not smooth. 😢
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 6 ай бұрын
That’s a very common occurrence. If you catch the craters forming while the resin is still liquid, just a light tap of your gloved finger on that area can mix things up a bit and help. If you don’t find the craters till the resin has set, just put another layer over to get things smooth. You can even add more alcohol inks into the second layer if there are bare spots you need to cover.

I'm a resin creator but never did a cup, it intimidates me. How do you determine how much resin you'll need?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 5 ай бұрын
A very general guideline is however many ounces the cup holds, you want that many milliliters of mixed resin. So for a 20-oz tumbler, mix up 20 ml of resin. You probably won’t actually need the whole 20ml, but that’s a pretty easy way to always have enough without much waste (and any resin you don’t use, can just get added to a silicone mold - I usually have a coaster or trinket bowl mold on hand just for the little bits of extra resin). Hope this helps! Once you do a tumbler or two, the intimidation should disappear and you can enjoy it 🤞😊

Ohhhh, you mean the spray painting, don’t you?? I just got it - sorry for misunderstanding! I don’t always manage to avoid drips, but the key is moving the can so the paint barely lands. Just back and forth quickly. Even a split-second too long in one place leaves a drip. I usually end up having to spray two layers of white to get good coverage.

Do you keep it spinning for entire curing time? 💯 Newbie here.
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 10 ай бұрын
I do, because I usually just let everything spin overnight. But my understanding is that after spinning about 6 hours, the tumbler doesn’t need to spin any longer (I’ve never tested that, tho). Of course, all of the above refers to “regular” resin that takes about 12+ hours to become touch dry. If you’re using a fast-set resin - which I would not recommend for a newbie to start with - then the cup can be done much sooner. But you should get comfortable using regular resin first, imo.

What does everyone think is so ugly about the fish eyes I think they look cool 😂😂😂😂
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 2 ай бұрын
Oh, I completely agree with you! But there are a lot of relatively new resin tumbler makers that get really stressed out by fish eyes because they see them as some sort of imperfection (many KZbin resin makers make fish eyes sound like something to be avoided at all cost). I think in general folks develop their own ideas and expectations then are disappointed when the resin does something different. So in this specific video for newbies - who are often the most stressed out by unexpected fish eyes - I was just trying to help them get the results they want. I actually made several videos embracing and trying to encourage fish eyes, like this one: When Resin Gives you Craters in Your Alcohol Ink Swirl Cup... Thanks for your comment! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jn6TeqaObp15qsU

What epoxy do you use?Do you use a mask?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda Жыл бұрын
In this particular video I'm using "Tumblers Coating Epoxy" because it's available on Amazon, so many folks will have easy access to it. But normally, my favorite brand of resin is KS Resin. There are links to everything plus a coupon code or two in the Description area below this video. As for the mask, yes, I do wear a half-face respirator while I'm using resin. It's personal preference -- many people don't wear a mask at all. Once you find a resin you like, your best bet is to use the Material Safety Data Sheet available for that brand of resin (usually on the company's website) and read up on the effects that particular resin might have, then make your decision from that info. Thank you for watching!!

My lung Doctor knows I do a variety of crafting projects. She does not want me doing any work with materials that require me to wear a mask/respirator, as my lungs are already so compromised from previous health issues. While I'm not yet so bad as to require supplemental oxygen, I hope to delay that need for as long as I can. That day, sadly, will come eventually. On to my question... I've used UV Resins of various types for several years now, being careful to ensure they do not recommend the use of masks/respirators. In exploring the topic of resin on tumblers, however, it isn't clear if this type of resin can be used. I understand it would be difficult because of the need for a tumbler turner. An additional rig would be needed to brace or suspend the UV light. However, I would think that would also help in ensuring the UV Resin would properly cure as all sides would be exposed. You'd also have to keep re-activating the UV light until the entire tumbler was cured. Has anyone tested this out? Thanks!

I’m sorry to hear about health issues keeping you from crafting as much as you’d like! But I completely understand. To your question - yes, I have used UV resin on a tumbler that’s on a turner with a UV lamp, and it does work, although there is the drawback you mention about having to restart the lamp. There are black lights you can buy and screw into a regular light socket, then rig that over your turning tumbler, so that’s a possible option. If you want to see what I did in one video, watch this one (and feel free to skip ahead to the 20 minute mark to get to the pertinent details) kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKKkmZSDgcybZtU

From the reflections on everyone's video the surface seems to be uneven, not perfectly smooth. Is that the way it is in "real life"?
@Luxinda

Sometimes alcohol inks can result in the first layer not being pristinely flat or smooth, but that’s easily fixed with another coat of resin.

Why not apply resin with a sponge brush
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 11 ай бұрын
Well, mainly because that’s a whole different type of alcohol ink tumbler. There are lots of different ways to get alcohol ink onto a tumbler, and this video was to show what I think is the easiest way for someone who’s brand new to resin tumblers and doesn’t know where to start. But that’s just my opinion. People can make whatever resin cup design or style they want 🤷‍♀️

Why do all my tumblers have pock marks?
@Luxinda
@Luxinda 7 ай бұрын
A lot of alcohol ink tumblers experience this problem through no fault of the artist - it’s simply something that happens with some resins and some alcohol inks. If you notice a divot or pock mark forming while the resin is still liquid, you can just gently tap the spot (or spots) with a gloved finger, and that usually does the trick. If you don’t see the pock marks until after the resin sets up, give the cup a light sanding, wipe it down with a damp cloth and apply another coat of resin that should set smooth. You can even drop more alcohol ink onto the second layer of resin if you need to try and cover up an area. Another possibility is to try a different brand of resin and/or a different brand of alcohol ink. For example, I have good luck with KS Liquid Stone resin and Marabu alcohol ink, but you may find other brands that work better for you. Good luck!
