My husband is Scottish, and I grew up in Texas and lived in Arizona the past 5 years. My health actually gets way better in cold weather, I often faint when it's warm. When we were on Skye I could actually hike without passing out from the heat, even in the wind and the rain. My friends in the desert think I'm crazy for wanting to live in the cold and the rain 🤣

Good for you and remember that you don't need their approval. I know it's easier said than done. I didn't mean to be the typical instantaneous American know it all type about it, it's just that I know how you feel. My spouse is from Scotland and I am an American. Our first venture out there failed many years ago. We have everything we need here in Virginia but something is missing. It is amazing how I can not see see someone for many years here but if you talk about moving there they freak out and suddenly have your best interests in mind. I can be 10 State s away and never be able to connect but talk about moving abroad and they instantly know what is best for you.

I visited Skye a few years ago the worst way possible, a tour bus. However, the people of Skye made it all worthwhile! I loved, loved, loved how friendly and gracious everyone I met treated me. The folks from the hostel, the folks working in the hotel and the guys from the pub created very fond memories of Skye and Scotland for me. Thank You!

I live on the south coast of England and I have been to Skye about three times, driven all round it, hiked up to the Old Man of Stor (in the rain). I wouldn't call it remote at all. A few weeks ago we toured the Outer Hebrides - now they are remote. I love Scotland and its islands and Highlands and people. Tourists are the same everywhere.

Although our winters are much shorter and less severe, there are a lot of similarities between the Blue Ridge Mts. of North Carolina and Skye. There are still remote places and have our own way and pace of doing things. Instead of "Skye Time" we have "Mountain Time", and we like it that that way.

Hello from the Faroe Islands! 🇫🇴 Population 12. Winter lasts 10½months and we have 3hrs of light per day in December. 155mph wind last month. 1½m snow isn't unusual. Digging out a 2m high snow drift in front of the door to the sheep barn in fun No bridge connecting us so we do have to take a ferry. No shops or businesses of any kind. Just a post office. I've cried the first time i felt the sun in Spring. It took 6 months to fix our village street lights. 6 months!!!

I'm also from down south and my partner who's Scottish and I have stayed in Dornie which I'm sure you know of four times in the past and I'm pretty sure that we visited Skye on all four occasions. I now trade the financial markets professionally and I'm aware that I'll need to factor in the power cuts, but it's my dream once I've generated enough wealth to buy a home on the Western Isles and I honestly don't mind where. I've been to quite few countries around the world, but as soon as my partner and I have driven to Dornie and the mountains slowly get bigger and bigger the spectacular beauty of the place immediately hits me like a ton of bricks, I feel quite emotional and nostalgic and I'm reminded why I want to live in this part of the world. We currently live in Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland just a fifteen minute walk from the North Sea so we're used to leaving the house and finding that one of our conifer trees has been lifted out of the ground by the coastal winds and I'm used to having to find an alternative route around centuries old trees which have been uprooted by them whilst I'm out walking my dog, but I absolutely love the place and I really enjoy my own company and being able to escape noise and traffic too and I always have, but thanks for the education. I definitely learned one or two things from this video which is why I've been searching for videos about life on the Western Isles.

We are finally moving up that way full time this year. Going to be amazing. After travelling and working all over the UK and the world there just aren’t many places I love as much as Skye. I know what you mean with the tourists through. Having lived for some years in a little tourist village in cornwall the summers were hell. Not being able to park at your house because there are 10 motorhomes and having a full shop to carry across the village, well it resulted in a lot of defrosted food and was quite frustrating lol Maybe see you in a few months when we get there.

Inconsiderate people blocking roads are a real bugbear for me so that would probably be a problem as well but to be honest that seems to be getting more common everywhere in the UK these days. I remember visiting Skye before the bridge was built and spending a great evening in a pub only to miss the last ferry back. Not a problem - curl up and spent the night in the public toilets. A bit of perspective needed I think. Sure Skye is remote compared to large towns/cities - quite obviously However as stated you are connected by a bridge to the main big island - although still a long/slow drive to larger towns Remote in UK terms would be living on the Shetlands/Orkneys off the north coast of Scotland or the Hebrides - certainly the Outer Hebrides especially. All a ferry ride away from the mainland or flight for some islands.

Went on holiday to Skye a few years ago... Stunning 💕 Beautiful place😍 Sounds strange... yes I was a tourist but hated the amount of tourists that were there it was awful! The place was rammed...everywhere you went! It was like being in a mainland city! Worse actually as the shops supermarkets,cafes Etc are small places rammed full of people...totally bumping into people every few seconds some of the time! Can fully understand the locals resenting the invasion! I hated it...so many people trailing up and down beauty spots like ants in a line! Really spoiled the feeling of remoteness and the beauty of it! ( no I sadly didn't get to see these beautiful spots was too much for me too join a trail of people) Have spent many years visiting the Isles of the Hebrides and have never experienced anything like the tourist invasion on Skye 😥

Such a common problem in areas like this! I love that people want to come and explore more remote areas but it is a shame when there's so little infrastructure to accommodate so many people. Real question, skye time, does that mean you need to be good at planning? Also, weather wise, is it that much different from the west of scotland/glasgow? Or is it just a big difference from England? I moved from Wales to Glasgow and the weather change was stark, so does it get a lot more or is it a much of a muchness by the time you're up here?
@roderickmathison52454 жыл бұрын
It’s a little bit darker & colder in Autumn/Winter than say Glasgow but not much (windier though). She’s right about snow, though. More chance of seeing snow on Rannoch Moor (Glen Coe), 65 miles north of Anniesland, Glasgow on a winters day than in most of Skye. Snow depends on altitude as well as latitude (think of Switzerland!), and most people in the NW Highlands live down at sea level, more or less...

Skye time sometimes needs forward planning, but it mostly just seems to require patience. Things get done, but at a much slower pace than where I lived previously. It was hard to get used to at first but now I'm just as bad for it as everyone else! People like to throw around the word "remote," but what makes a place truly "remote?" Is it the sparse population, is it the limited access via transportation, limited commerce, distance from a large city, etc.? I live in Wyoming (USA), a landlocked state with few people and similar observations/comments that you've made here. It is often considered remote as well.

It’s hard in the sense that it’s so far. We moved over 700 miles, we had our furniture in a removals lorry which took 2 days to get up to Skye and then we had our essentials in the car with us. It was exhausting to be honest. Getting work year round is tough and the wages here are below the national average but things like food are more expensive. The flip side of that is that fuel, public transport, and some other amenities are cheaper. I’m thinking of making a part 2 of this video actually because the cost of living here is a strange juggling act and I think I could explain it better ‘in person’ rather than text!

@@being_liv thank you for your reply! I think a 'part 2' would be a great idea, I certainly would enjoy it! Thanks again :)

@@being_liv Really liked the vid Liv. I'm gonna level with you. If you want a couple of thousand subscribers in a matter of months show footage of the wild weather, how you keep warm during the cold times, what you cook etc. You live in a beautiful, isolated and raw place and if you can make some spare cash from youtube during the winter by showing people this seems like a no brainer. All the best...

What a great video, thank you! What is the intro music piece? It is wonderful!
@being_liv3 жыл бұрын
I stupidly didn't save it or note it down anywhere but at this point I was using iMovie to edit and probably took it from the music library on there. Sorry that's not much help!

Loved your vlog. I feel for you . But where are you from, you don’t have a Scottish accent ?

To avoid ppl who want a 24/7 economy or "tesco" could be exactly the reason or one of the reasons to live on an island. How did your mental state change? If it changed at all. Thanks for sharing

I definitely went from racing around like a mad thing to being a lot calmer and more patient since moving here. Where I lived before it was all about the rat-race, 24/7 convenience, keeping up with everyone else, and on Skye that just doesn't exist for me now. People here just do what they love, take their time, enjoy things. It's made me a totally different person to be honest!
@eisvogel80994 жыл бұрын
@@being_liv Makes sense. The scariest part would be if one wouldn't even notice anymore being a "rat".

Are there hospitals with laboratories? What you've said reminds me a terrible lot of living and working in Wyoming. Everything was so expensive and pay was a bit below national average.
@alasdairmackenzie9054 жыл бұрын
There is a hospital at Broadford on the island and plans to build a new one. If you take seriously ill, the Scottish NHS has a fleet of helicopter ambulances which will come and get you to take you to hospital at Inverness.
@being_liv4 жыл бұрын
I honestly couldn't even tell you where the nearest laboratory is! It must be Inverness, which is about a 2-3 hour drive away depending on where you live on the island

Bit of a dumb question... but where did you get your tattoos done? Is there a tattoo studio on Skye? Or did you have to go to the mainland?
@being_liv4 жыл бұрын
There's nowhere on Skye that does them so I go to Inverness. I always use the same studio - InverInk - because they're the absolute best. I've had work done by every artist they have pretty much and my sleeve is being done by Sarah, who is an absolute sweetheart. I can't wait to get more work done actually
