I am a big "move to the mountains" advocate - I think it'll improve your life in so many ways (many of which I talk about in this video). However, there are certainly some drawbacks to living in the mountains, and definitely some things to consider before buying a house in the mountains. I'm not a professional, or even a self-proclaimed professional on all things mountain living, but I have literally lived in the mountains for almost a decade, so I've learned just a bit. I've bought, owned, and improved upon two houses in the mountains, and bought land, designed, and built a house from scratch up here as well - so it does give me a few insights in that regard. Hope you enjoy the video, and hope it might be helpful or educational for anyone who has considered it!

I live in a ski town, traded remoteness for conveniences like being 10 minutes from the lifts, stores and restaurants, neighborhood kids/community, etc. But still fresh air, snow, lake/beaches, trails and the rest of the good stuff! OTOH lots of snow clearing, bears going though you trash, heat going out in the middle of winter, pass closes and you're stuck in town, expensive, tourists. Nowhere is perfect but the mountains are the best for me, can't imagine living in a city.

We moved to the mountains not long ago here in California (Santa Cruz Mountains). We do not deal with snow nor high altitud weather like you do, but it is certaintly a more weather challenging environment than what we were used to in the Silicon Valley. I wanned to say thank you for the inspiration to detach from city living. We wanted a house but we wouldn't have likely consider living out here in the woods if we wouldn't have seen ur videos. So THANKS man!! ...BTW, now being here... I think we need a truck :))) And yes, we are not coming back to city living either!!! Cheers bro and best wishes and luck for ur kid.

I have a place in the mountains just outside of Leavenworth Wa close to LK Wenatchee, 1800 ft elevation. I love it there, so relaxing and peaceful. Surrounded by ponderosa pines, rivers, creeks and lakes. Going ice fishing this weekend and snowboarding. The people are also way more chill and friendly. Another thing to consider if you have kids is what's the school system like in rural areas. We live in SW Jeffco (CO) and are considering moving to WY or SD, but the school ratings in the rural towns we're looking at pale in comparison to what we have now. It's a huge consideration to take into account when relocating to a small town.

We live on an acreage outside of town in SW Iowa. Similar to your setup, we're 10 min from groceries, my kids schools, etc. But acreages are almost like a full time job sometimes. Downed trees, partial gravel driveway, plant/grass/weed growth etc. But when covid went crazy this place was an oasis. And same as you, whenever we're in town for too long, it's sure worth the drive to get away from it all and come home.

We live in rural Wyoming and feel very lucky to have acreage, underground fiber internet, plenty of water, amazing views, 4 seasons, hunting, horses, milk cows, freedom, unlimited outdoor activities, very short commute times, good healthcare, free range childhoods, great schools, sports programs and community. I agree with your pros/cons and I too typically dread having to go anywhere out of our valley, one that surprised me is I don't even like going to big ski resorts anymore, people tend to be rude, impatient and generally disagreeable. I'd rather snowmobile from my driveway into the backcountry and find some fun terrain or visit a nearby no name resort for a pleasant family friendly experience. One other perk I have found, we waste less money on impulse shopping. Since there isn't a target or whatever nearby to stop and inevitably buy garbage we don't really need, we tend to make more intentional purchases and make do without when necessary. On the flip side, the tools and equipment necessary to keep your property maintained in rural and mountain areas is significant but I'm not mad. Tractor, snowblower, dirtbikes, chainsaws, trailers, outbuildings, on and on. Hard to beat the quiet natural environment, star filled skies, cool mountain air and clean untampered well water. Covid showed me what a quality of life upgrade rural living truly is and is worth pretty much any inconvenience to me.

If there’s one thing that has been obvious to me through life, it’s that people need to stay centered / balanced. So as much time as we spend in seclusion, we should spend being social. I agree with you, living where it’s quiet and secluded is best, as long as town/ work/ fellowship isn’t too far away.

Cost is number one Con in my book. I own 5 acres in Park County and tried to build after Covid. I spent $8,000 on engineered drawing for my A-frame cabin, modest 1,700 sqft, and, now, cant afford to build! Just the county required "driveway" was quoted at $60,000 and that was WITHOUT having to do any blasting! My house, WITHOUT a well being drilled, was pushing $600,000 with septic and, also, that was WITHOUT any blasting! Now, looking like I may have to sell and look at Arkansas, Tennessee and North Carolina. Breaks my heart because ive been planning on retiring in Colorado for almost 10 years and have a BEAUTIFUL view of Pike's Peak and the area South to Cripple Creek.

We live in Iowa and always wanted to move out there. But I have 4 acres outside of a small town here. 4 bed, 3 baths all for less than what some are paying for rent. This place out there would be 800k to over 1mil. We make pretty good money but not enough to live out there comfortably. I'll take my Iowa quiet and it's less than 8 hrs to CO, or Arkansas where we like to ride and everything else.

I moved to Colorado on the early 2000's to fulfill my mountain dreams. However, it didn't take long for me to realize the huge political shift that was underway there. Most of the other transplants were unlike me. They believed more government was the answer to all of society's problems. I couldn't stomach it and left. The shift in Colorado and other mountain states is quite sickening to me. They were once bastions of freedom with a hard work ethic where your outcome in life was on you, as it should be. Now Colorado in particular, with Montana and Idaho trending the same way, is ruled by a broken mindset that believes freedom is a bad thing and that their fake utopian ways are superior. You can clearly see how those shifts have changed Mike's content. He started as more of a gun and gear channel then as the winds have shifted on KZbin and elsewhere he transitioned away from guns and gear. He even did an Easter video once where he mentioned being a Christian. I have actually met Mike briefly at Shot Show a few years ago and he seems like a good guy. This is not a criticism of Mike, just an observation and a reminder to everyone to stand strong on your beliefs and don't move somewhere else and expect it to change for you.

You would never pay less than $20,000 for that today....... Not anywhere. Unless you just rented an excavator and did your own septic. I think well casing is about ten dollars a foot right now...... You can barely buy the well casing for 4500 for a 310 foot well. And the drilling and labor won't be less than five grand. And that doesn't even account for septic materials cost. $50,000 sounds about normal if you don't do anything yourself.

Home Owners Association - basically a lot of neighborhoods have an association that dictates what you can and can’t do on your property (as part of that neighborhood). Sometimes they don’t have a ton of rules, but sometimes they dictate how many cars (if any) you can park in the driveway, what color you can paint your house, if you can park a trailer in your yard, etc. You pay them a fee every month, so they can make some rules for you to live by (they also typically handle maintenance of common areas, parks, etc with that fee). The intention of them is mostly good - to ensure a higher standard of living is met and enforced, so the neighborhood remains at some level of well-kept standards. It’s not all bad, honestly - but they can definitely be annoying.

I don't think I could make it to the AG1 segment 😂. Good information as always. My wife and I are debating moving from Alabama to eastern WA north of Spokane. Will keep this stuff in mind if we make the move.

@@LastLineOfDefense That is surprising, although assets/equity included I bet they're over 7 figures. I know some folks who live in the mountains who aren't millionaires but they live in old cabins lol

I take it back, I know a few people with net worths over a million that live in the mountains, but I know many more with much higher net worths that do not live in the mountains. But yeah, haha, the point I was trying to make is that there are plenty of very average income people that live in the mountains.

I lived in the Colorado mountains for half my life. About as far from a millionaire as you can get. Just have to live a simple lifestyle.

I live off-grid in the mountains of Colorado now and I don’t even make six figures with me and my wife’s income combined. 😂 it just takes someone who can bear all the issues you’re bound to deal with.

I used to own property in Pine. While Colorado is indeed incredibly beautiful anymore it's been blue pilled way too hard. It's now a VERY expensive state to live in and with all the latest gun bills/pathetic politics and freedom attacks on its citizens I wouldn't go near what I call Calirado.

Yeah, bunch of “patriots” running away from anything they don’t like, rather than staying and fighting, is definitely a big problem for the country.

Colorado is one of, if not the best states to live, absolutely beautiful, with massive amounts of public land, well positioned in the US, and every recreational activity that you could want. Denver and Boulder suck (politically), but everywhere else is awesome. Politics could certainly be improved, but I can own any gun I want, have all the suppressors in the world, open carry and concealed carry anywhere that any other state can - and we also respect castle doctrine. The thing with people that attack other states’ politics - they do absolutely nothing at all to help the case, and they retreat / run away to whatever right wing bastion might be left - eventually leading to the total erosion of freedom everywhere. The ONLY appropriate answer is to stay where you are, dig your heels in, and fight with your voice, money, vote and tax dollars - which is what I always advocate for.

@@LastLineOfDefensewell said, I wasn’t “attacking” the whole state necessarily. Everything you said is true as far as the natural beauty etc. I’m lucky to live under sane leadership in Florida but it wasn’t always that way so there’s hope and I feel the tide turning a bit. But I might consider trading my sane leadership for what you wake up to everyday I love the mountains I love skiing and all that stuff you have access too. You’re a good man Mike I’ve followed you for a long time and what you said about digging your heels in is absolutely correct. God bless and take care

Appreciate it! And yeah, after having said all of that - hope it didn’t come off defending Colorado’s politics or anything (should be apparent that I have a different mentality than most of our elected officials). Just having seen some repercussions from things like Magpul getting shamed out of the state (by the 2a community, because of their lack of understanding politics and general short-sightedness), I always just have to jump on anyone that infers running away to a more politically aligned state is the best answer - when I honestly think it is the worst answer.

@@LastLineOfDefense And once you realize there really are no more right wing bastions because every education/media institution is subverted, it only makes sense to just stay where you are and fight.

@@LastLineOfDefenseha! No it definitely didn’t come off that way. With these crazy times we live in it’s really reassuring to know there’s people my age that think and feel the same way I do in places where outsiders might think everyone is far gone. Even large swaths of California there’s people that are doing exactly what you are and I have deep respect for them staying to fight back so to speak. What you said really resonated with me, basically “don’t give in and let them have the most beautiful places this country has to offer” and Colorado certainly is one of it not the most beautiful places, it’s not theirs, they didn’t build it we just have to be good stewards and leave this country better than we found it. I can see you have a deep respect and connection with the land and this country and I’m right there with ya.
