I'm in the very beginning stages of my dream of opening the first dedicated bonsai nursery here in oklahoma. As a single father with sole custody it presents challenges, but I knew from the moment I got my first tree that this was what I was going to do with the rest of my life. Working on getting an etsy store set up, and on a way to get capital to provide soil, tools, wire, fertilizer, deadwood supplies etc. I was to specialize in taking raw/young material and growing them to be bonsai, similar to what telpurian does but also providing all the other things mentioned as well as trees in later stages Still have tons to learn, and I rely solely on youtube, mirai live and bonsai u so these videos are invaluable to me, thanks

Its better to sell raw material for people who want to make bonsai. Soil, tools, pots, fertilizer etc are all bigger profits than trying to sell finished bonsai

Thanks for the low-key hint on where to get good copper wire. I have his email bookmarked now and it's far less expensive than what I've found so far on the internet. You know you're the best in the biz when you don't even need a fully functional website for people to order from and instead say "email me" to order wire.

Bjorn - thank you for sharing. Your insight and back story to starting a Bonsai nursery is invaluable. These keys to success go hand in hand with balancing your time along with being a well rounded Bonsai Artist. Knowing one's audience and finding a specialty is essential. Great stuff, Domo!

Your work is amazing. One aspect is the cost factor. I don't want to start a nursery but just acquiring the supplies for just a couple of plants starts to be an investment. The plants, wires, tools, growing mediums, pots, etc. All have to be sourced and most things need to be shipped. It's kind of daunting so I understand all the work that you do on such a high level. A really high level!

I always wanted to have my own regional native yamadori nursery, my major set back is that I have no business skills. To me it not about money, I just would like someone like my trees enough to have in there collection. Right now I lost a family member and while I was away I lost my entire collection. So having to start back from the ground up is a whole lot of work. That's exactly were I'm doing work the land get it ready to grow and share to fellow local citizens.

Bjorn, is this a hint at a franchise opportunity? 😅 So glad you're doing so well from the time i first started to watch your journey 12 yrs ago. But you forgot the most important part....your better half that helped along the way. Also your supportive family when you started at the club in Tn. Glad to see you at festival this year, thanks, to bad we had to cut it short. Steve.

As an Ops Manager for a small business, I can attest that there are two key facets to owning a business: 1. Doing the work of the business. 2. Running the business (e.g. the accounting, invoicing, paying bills, managing staff) Most owners love doing the work of the business (because that's what they were passionate about), but they fail at actually running the business. My recommendation to any small business owner is to have a "right hand man" (or woman) who excels at "running the business", so that you can focus on what you love. Otherwise running the business will suck the passion out of doing the business.

This is awesome info. I'm planning on opening a very small bonsia garden in my back yard. It wil be an appointment only kinda thing. More of a hobby I'll share with others then a full blown business. I plan on selling trees, my hand made pots and offer care and styling. I'm also looking into starting a local club. There is little to no bonsai community in my area, but lots of people interested.

A very basic question: When you do decide to open a nursery after getting the right training, you will need a base set of trees for display. You cant decide to start a nursery and then hunt for material and then start training them. You will still need some finished trees to start with. Where do you get that material? are these trees imported from china/japan?

Thank you for this Great video This is what im searching for to know more about bonsai practices revenues to make the first step and jump in a new adventure in the BONSAI art world Im flowing you and many other bonsai masters years ago I love your great beautiful work and your videos helped me too much You give too much to what you love, (bonsai art) you follow what you love and this is was a great mistake you didn't concentrated in the businesses matter and your revenue If you gave 1/3 of your time to the business matter (selling bonsai material, soil, fertiliser, wire, pots....) Eiseien will be a great company. An Artist must live and he needs money for that Sorry for my critical comment but its made with love 🙏 All my best wishes success and happiness 🙏

Basically he sell extra stuff like pots and stuff while growing trees which he then look after and later sell as lump sum kinda of things maybe also marketing like social media sell on Etsy, eBay or get money from ads on KZbin as part of one business strategy ... that's what most bonsai nurseries do these days 😉😎

a question I've been having for a while now: what about bonsais' thefts? Are all nurseries insured against this (can you insure your trees?) and usually how much does this factor impact in running this type of business (as, for example, having cctv in place, alarms, insurance as said, guardian dogs and whatnot). Thanks!

That’s what I have been doing this year. My biggest problem I have In countered is so many people have bought the cheap so called Bonsai from the big box stores that almost die immediately. So even though many people are interested in Bonsai they have been burned from their experience in the art and are unwilling to try again with actual Bonsai.
