The first video in a new series laying out the basics for different practices! If you want to see me cover a particular concept or idea, let me know in the comments!
An added note for first section: Folk Catholicism could easily be defined as any approach to Catholicism that doesn't strictly adhere to Vatican rules or hierarchy. Many Catholic traditions adhered to by Catholics could be considered folk Catholic. I consider Catholicism to be an adherence to Church rules & hierarchy. Folk Catholicism is still very much an (unofficial) branch of Catholicism. Many folk Catholic practitioners continue to consider themselves Catholic, and many Catholics are folk Catholic practitioners.

You've just made me realize that I grew up in a struggle between regular catholicism and folk catholicism. As a kid my family went to church. I did Sunday school and all that stuff but as I got older, I started to question everything and that was the end. I felt lost for many years. I realized that I don't care about the church but I believe in the saints and in the traditions of my Mexican heritage. My mom still goes to church but she's the one getting the holy water and honoring la Virgen de Guadalupe. She's not into the church either. This video has made me realize that my reconnection with my spiritually is folk catholicism. I got my Virgen de Guadalupe candles, the holy water my mom gave me, prayers and doing research on the saints. This video has been a great help. I now feel I have something to work from

Any advice on learning about Mexican heritage and ancestors?? Or where to start?? My family really isn't into talking about anything or any beliefs. They always leaned towards Catholic but I've never really attended church growing up either so kind of confused where I stand or believe

@@Always.Rejoice I've never actually given advice or recommended anything to anyone about this since I'm pretty private about it because I'm still trying to figure it out for myself but I'll try. La Virgen de Guadalupe/ Our Lady of Guadalupe, is a big part of the Mexican cultural identity. I feel like you've seen her plastered all over anything that's remotely Mexican in any type of media. A lot of catholic churches that have a big community of Mexican, and other Latin American people have a separate space for La Virgen. Sometimes it's an altar or maybe a shrine outside. December 12th is her feast day. It's a big day. You should definitely read up on her. As for ancestors, can't help you there. If you know the region your family is from try looking up information from that area. There's a lot of different regions with their own traditions and festivals. My parents are from very different areas of the country. My dad didn't really share about how he grew up. My mom did. He's older now and a lot more willing to talk about where he grew up and stuff. Also, my dad made sure we were at mass every Sunday but a lot of the family around us were like your family. They leaned towards Catholicism but never went to church. I'm sorry if this wasn't helpful. It's all I could think of.

I was having a bad day and listening to podcasts, when I came across one called the Jesus Witch Podcast by Lina El-Saieh Lee, and I realized that I did believe in my faith just not in the church itself, this vid really helped thanks so much!!

I actually had this struggle for years! I’ve always been an eclectic witch, but I was always drawn back and forth between it and Christianity/Catholic beliefs and imagery. I missed the community and positivity associated with church, but I couldn’t get behind the belief in God. So I tried working with Greek and other mythological deities. But I didn’t really feel any connection there, either. I’ve been drawn to Catholic imagery and beautiful rosaries, so I looked into saints. Closest I got was Saint Brigid because she’s believed to be a Pagan Goddess converted to Catholic Saint because she was so well loved. Then, FINALLY, I returned to a Saint I had VERY briefly tried working with: Santa Muerte. And I FINALLY FOUND THAT FEELING THAT PEOPLE GET IN CHURCH. But I’m still allowed to be a witch, be the sinner and not feel inferior, and simply be me. I’m still an eclectic witch, but I’m an eclectic witch of Santa Muerte.
@soothingsounds4464
@soothingsounds4464 Жыл бұрын
I agree with your statement but the Santa muerte is not a catholic “saint” who actually is not a saint at all , she’s a Mexican folk saint - which is different than being a saint of the Catholic Church . La Muerte is condemned by the Church and she is actually very dangerous to work with and is very wrathful of you don’t venerate her in the way she likes and she also has a habit of taking away your loved ones after a while if you get my drift , so just beware before you start working with her that it’s very dangerous .

This was a very eye opening video. I do not consider myself catholic but I believe in god. I would say I’m more spiritual than religious. I believe in light work, I do believe in some catholic ideals, as well as Buddhist ideals. I had bad experiences with paganisms and don’t feel comfortable with it. I didn’t know about folk magic and can’t wait to learn more! I believe in prayer and I also believe in things that the Catholic Church scoffs at. Figuring out where I belong is so hard. thank you for sharing your knowledge, it has already helped me:)

I need videos like this. Not many people talk about it. I'm not sure if I work with Saints but my mom seems to when she prays, even as a bruja. I usually pray to God but usually Guadalupe. We also ask angels help. I'm unsure what I am but I am a witch. I'm just still studying. I've experienced a lot and I'm unsure why I began this path but I got curious and saw a lot of the misconceptions people saw in witchcraft. Witchcraft is like a personality. Just because you see someone do something good, doesn't mean that they are good. There's good and bad in everything. There's also things that are in the middle of those two labels. I guess I stand in understanding all sides of things.

It's funny hearing about the St. Joseph statue and selling your house. My mother always said witchcraft and magic was devil's work and hated when I'd even draw a star, but she practiced folk magic without knowing it. She didn't even understand why certain practices were done with saints. She just did them. She raised me to be a Catholic witch without realizing it.

In Argentina we habe a bunch of saints venerated by people that aren’t recognised by the church. They just look away because people has a strong faith in some of those saints and build shrines everywhere. For instance San La Muerte, La Difunta Correa, El Gauchito Gil, and some others. People still attend Mass , but they go also to the shrine and have a picture or shrine at home. My grandma had a picture of the Difunta Correa and would offer her a Glass of water every day. Sometimes, as a kid, I was allowed to refresh the water and I felt honoured . The Difunta Correa was a woman who died of thirst in the desert (San Juan), but her toddler was kept alive because she nursed them breast milk after she was dead. Her body kept breastfeeding them. I think that’s why she was venerated mostly by women. The Gauchito Gil was a renegade that would steal to big land owners to share with those who had nothing. He is still being venerated and you can see the shrines all over Argentinian routes. People leave water bottles under a red flag. If you need it, you are allowed to take it, but you have to give back something similar for others in need. Is pretty interesting. In northern Argentina people carve San La Muerte in bones and insert them under their skin. That way they are protected and forever connected. That was a way too long comment. I appreciate your videos and info’s about Volk practices. Thank you!🤗

Excellent video once again, as I have been watching what you have to say about the practice. I myself growing up Roman/Irish Catholic (both sides of the family), have always been drawn to the mystical side of it. As an occult practitioner for many years now. I see my central focus/ practice in the possibility of becoming only folk Catholicism. I am a straight man myself, so I assume it’s rare for someone like me to seek interest without the trauma. Even though I don’t care who’s practicing it’s your personal space to do whichever you wish.

Very interesting! I've I stayed clear of most things related to the church, but when I was younger either my mom or my gramma told me to ask St. Anthony for help if I needed to find something. It would always work! Now that I'm older, I get the desire to look up different saints and see what they're all about. I have to learn how to separate the folk side from the organized side; I would feel bad for wanting to work with them but then get mad for something that has nothing to do with them.

If you research the indigenous medicine of your area and the historic practice of herbalists and faith healersof your own families' heritage, you can develop your own traditions. At the end of the day, it is both our faith in God, our acceptance of the Nicene and Apostle's creeds and other components of our faith, and our brains that are the basis of our local Catholic practices. Herbology is ancient wisdom that was hard won by our forebears using the same trial and error as modern doctors, just with with fancy tools. I believe when we see things that are pro social, uplifting, peace making, justice bringing, and heart healing we are in the presence of the Holy Spirit, who will use every avenue available to bring us closer to God spititually and physically But we need to guard against getting arrogant, conceited, or undisciplined in our faith to protect ourselves from getting tricked by those who wish us harm, even if they don't realize that's what they are doing. Be humble, be confident, and pray. If it seems to good to be true, if it comes at too easy a cost, be wary. Individualism is not necessarily a Christian virtue, as such.

Someone once said that “magic” is when there is this belief that certain formulas and actions done right can reliably produce supernatural effects. While official Catholicism mostly dislikes this idea (the sin of superstition is precisely attributing this idea to certain blessings or rites), it is noteworthy that even officially this is highly related to sacramental theology. In Catholicism, a sacrament is a sign that produces the effect is signifies. Baptism for instance has water as a sign. The pouring of water while reciting “I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit” does not merely symbolize washing away of sin but actually does it so long as water is used with these words and with the intention to baptize.

Ancient Roman houses were built with scattered shrines in alcoves, but there was often a main alter or shrine in the entrance courtyard and Rome. I would imagine that that author mentioned modern Italian architecture because that placement of religious areas/statuary probably crossed over when Rome adopted Christianity and created the Catholic Church. I really appreciate this video! I was raised Catholic, but did experience religious trauma, and was non religious for decades while searching for my authentic self. Since I've been on this path, I've thought I've left that aspect of my life in the past. However, as i struggled growing up, every time I prayed it was to Mary, never Jesus or "God". She was the one who comforted me, and was with me and saved my life. I've also been very strongly attached to St Francis of Asissi. I now have some ideas of where to start to bring them back into my spiritual practice. Thank you so much!

I would say folk Catholicism are practices and beliefs held by the laity, independent of the Vatican hierarchy and its orthodoxy. I've become interested in it since I found the Way of the Rose group. My patroness is Our Lady of Prompt Succor. That was my mom's favorite aspect of Our Lady. Turns out, where I live is her hometown, where she gained that epithet! Her mother shrine in the whole world is here, New Orleans. She protects us from hurricanes.

I'm a learning catholic witch from Indonesia, but I haven't done much spells to really call myself a full-pledge witch. I started my practice from tarot cards, and ofc, I consulted about it to a priest, and he said "go for it, it's totally fine", but I still got rejected by another priest. What you described regular catholicism and fold catholicism help me understand the difference between me and the church. I still go to church and right now I'm a sunday school mentor. I noticed that there's a difference between catholic here and catholic anywhere else in the world, which is the baptism. Baptism here you'll receive a name from a saint that your parent think is the best saint to protect/guide you, mine are St. Albert and St. Therese, which I would love to work with.

newish but this video kinda helped open my eyes to different kind of 'forms' or beings to work with. I've been working on meditating and trying to find who wants to work with me but I keep seeing trees or specifically yggdrasil or what feels to me like yggdrasil. is this a thing? it feels a little like just 'asking the universe' kinda thing but idk I just keep coming back to it. you were talking about the difference of saints and gods and pop culture gods (that i never heard of before so thank you for my daily learning) but what about (more or less) inanimate objects? I hope im making sense. thank you for your work and postings hope you have a fantastic weekend!

You clearly put a lot of work into this! I admire you for putting this together even though it’s a very complicated subject. Was it difficult at first to get saints to work with you when you don’t speak to their version of God? I wonder if it bothered them at all? And I agree St Anthony is a real homie. My family always petitions him when we loose something, and he comes through every time.

With this video you kind of helped me see the path way clearer than it was before, huh. It has been very interesting to see how many saints I have been organically drawn to only to learn that they are venerated in my home area. My dad's whole side was Mormon,aswas my maternal grandfather. My maternal grandmother was an episcopalian orphan mormon convert, so I don't have a lot of familial connection to it. That being said I started to become drawn to the Magdalena, and later learned that the only cathedral dedicated to her in the US is in my home town. A similar thing has been happening with Mary as she is venerated by some here under the epithet Our Lady of the Snows

In Argentina we have a couple popular saints and a recognized virgin, we have la virgen de Luján (Lujan's virgin) that cares for people that drive, similar to El gauchito gil a popular one that also cares for people on the route but has a bigger story, we also have La difunta correa, that is specific to truck drivers I believe (a lot of driving ones it seems that people who work traveling have the need for them here) and there is a recent one called Gilda, she was a cumbia singer really beloved here and she appeared to a couple people and helped them and it became a popular saint.

I am very late but thank you so much for this video!! I actually went to a Roman Catholic school up until 2 years ago, and something about the way the religion teachers acted as if everything they were saying was indisputable fact, along with the blatant, even celebrated homophobia constantly causing me to feel unsafe really rubbed me the wrong way. I've dabbled in other spiritual practices and witchcraft for a couple of years now, but I always thought back to my time as a devout Catholic, and a few things I really enjoyed and that made me feel spiritual closeness (i guess, idk how to explain?) were our yearly saint research projects and a rosary novena to Mary. I was wondering for awhile if there was a way to incorporate saints back into my spirituality without incorporating the Bible or the Church, and now I've found a way! Thank you again!

In 750AD, a priest experienced a terrible temptation to doubt the True Presence while He was saying Mass. As he pronounced the words of consecration, the host and the wine transformed into what appeared to be flesh and blood. In 1970, more than 1,200 years later, the archbishop of Lanciano, with Rome’s approval, requested a thorough scientific examination of the miraculous relics by Dr. Edward Linoli, director of the hospital at Arezzo and professor of anatomy, histology, chemistry, and clinical microscopy. His report, submitted on March 4, 1971, detailed the following results: The coagulated substance is human blood, AB blood type, with the same protein distribution as found in normal, fresh blood The host is human muscular striated tissue of the myocardium, left ventricle (heart); arteries, veins, branch of vagus nerve, and adipose tissue all can be identified Like the blood, the flesh is also fresh, living tissue, because it “responded rapidly to all the clinical reactions distinctive of living beings” as if the flesh and blood samples had been taken that day Histological tests revealed no sign of preservation techniques of any kind

Love love love this video! It's far and few between where I find a folk practitioner that I resonate with this much. I absolutely love everything you said and agree with all of this information! I'm an Appalachian folk practitioner & I am following in the footsteps of my great grandmother who was an Appalachian Catholic cunning woman in our region. She healed with herbs, the moon & her Catholic faith. And also following in my other ancestors footsteps as well. So my practice is a mix of Appalachian folk magic, Pennsylvania Dutch folk magic & Irish-American Catholic folk magic. Anyways, I wanted to add a few notes for anyone who may be interested to hear from another folk practitioner. To anyone throwing caution to the wind (as for finding a Patron Saint) another great way to find one is by looking into the Saints that you are drawn to due to similarities. Example, someone going into the study of Animal Medicine may want to have Saint Francis of Assisi on their side! Of course do so with respect, researching how to reach out to said Saint & make sure they're accepting of your veneration & will work with you. And I say this speaking of those Saints who are now venerated mostly world wide (and not really just in one region) in mind. Also another way to honor/venerate a Saint if you can't afford statues or find Catholic Saint candles with images on them (in my area you can only really find Mother Mary, Jesus & Saint Jude) check into Holy cards! You can lean them against the plain big tall Novena candles, keep them on your altar, in your car, under your pillow, in your pocket, etc. I find them on eBay for under $2 and free shipping (or super cheap shipping, like 50 cents). You can also draw or paint a picture of them. And lastly, praying chaplets is another really nice way to connect and venerate them. I pray Archangel Michael's chaplet every Sunday (and it's even more than just venerating Archangel Michael as it's much like his other prayer and is a prayer of protection). I hope you didn't already mention these in your video. I waited until I finished the video to hop on my laptop and comment. I was trying to remember everything I wanted to say, so if I repeated something you already mentioned, my apologies! Thank you so much for this informative video.

Witches use practices that work. For me, using the Psalms and the rosary in my spellwork works. But I do not consider myself religious at all. Many witches would look at my practice and say, oh, you are a Christian witch. I do not consider myself that at all but I will say that I have healed some of my religious trauma. A few years ago I would not have considered using the Psalms in my practice, too much trauma. But today I do see more and more elements coming back because I use tools that work.

Interpretations of the saints vary. For example, Protestant interpretations vary according to various perceptions of time before or after death. But some Roman Catholics interpret I Corinthians 6:2-3 in regards to the Saints in Heaven. "Or do you not know that the saints will judge the world? And if the world is to be judged by you, are you incompetent to try trivial cases? Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!" Prayer of the Saints in Heaven is Biblical. 🙏

aunt frankieee!! this was a really great video and though you may not see or respond to this i would still like to share how much you and your videos have helped me to build my practice. i actually learned through this video that i probably wouldn't be working with saints or any other prominent beings in catholicism. firstly, because of the point you made that we have to understand that working with saints mean that we are understanding that we are within the realm of catholicism and a lot of prayers that are offered to the saints are actually also offered to god. i tried creating my own prayers for the saints but it didn't feel right because it felt selfish and as if i am taking them out of the beliefs that they had when they were alive. i think some saints would mind and notice my resistance to the christian god whenever i avoid or get emotionally hurt and bitter calling His name in prayers. i came from the philippines, one of the countries that were colonized by the spaniards and heavily taught christianism and catholicism to. during the conversion, a lot of my ancestors (particularly female because our religious practitioners were dominantly women and feminized men and/or we may call them trans women today) were painted as evil. some were even reportedly fed to crocodiles and some were a villain of the popular mythologies. it's hard to separate the action of the practitioners who did that to our indigenous religious leaders, to the christian/catholic god. i think it will take lifetime to separate the ill intentions of those practitioners as they did it while claiming that it's the will of god. but, i wouldn't have realized why saint work doesn't work for me or why saint work is difficult for me, if it wasn't for this video. i was petitioning mother mary for a while when i had my exams and i thought it was going to be easy because i did it a lot when i was in 4th grade and she granted my petitions everytime (i write her gratitude letters and tell her a bit of how my day went) but now that i've grown older (i'm in college hdhdbx), i realized it's not working anymore because of the belief that i now hold to a religion that she's part in. so again, thank you so much aunt frankieeee!!!

A lot of the reasons why temples and beliefs were switched about was due to how many times places were invaded and by who. For example Scilly had been by the Greeks, the Romans, the Normans, the Arabs, ect. And so has many different believes woven in over the years. The temples switched, churches switched, deity switched. Doesn't make any of those beliefs a fraud. Quite often the deity is the same, just under another name. I really enjoyed this video and learnt a lot.

For example, St Lucy is a saint i always had a special care for. I remember when i was little, mom took me to a St Lucy's church, and there was this big statue of her and i would scream repeatedly: "WUCY! WUCY!" pointing to her, idk why lol. And now i work with her, usually asking her protection from the evil eye and sometimes i ask her to get some troubles solved and help me focusing, and for some reason she loves incense and herb burning 😅 i love saints sm, some of them are even comforting sometimes. Hi, I have kind of a long post here because I am conflicted. How do I start? Well, first of all, I am a Witch. My beliefs are kind of eclectic as is my practice. I am very solid in my pagan beliefs even though I am open minded. Now, I am also a paranormal investigator in my free time. My most recent investigation was intense, and a negative entity did scratch me. What helped get this entity to stop was my team’s Catholic saint prayers & jewelry. Another Witch and paranormal investigator friend of mine who has a little bit more experience with all of this actually suggested I get a St Benedict piece & saint Micheal piece. So, I did get a St Benedict ring & an Archangel Micheal necklace (I know angels and saints are different but I felt more comfortable with the angel). I’m still a little uncomfortable to call upon saints especially when I venerate ancestors & land spirits. I also have an ancestral idk, I’m being drawn to the goddess Brigid who is also a saint in another context. But I’m conflicted because I don’t want my calling upon saints or angels to make my pagan beliefs and practice less than, and I also don’t want to offend the saints or angels by my not necessarily being a Catholic or Christian. Is there a way that can help with my internal discomfort of perceived conflict? What do you suggest? Great video by the way!

I am realising that my family was in fact always practicing folk catholcicism.... never believed much in the Church, talking to the saints when in need, considering a prayer like a way of calling their attention to you and before closing the prayer with an amen (ex: hail mary or "je vous salue marie " in french) you squeeze in your request, and then close it, thanking them the same way when what you requested happened. Going to church just to set the mood of " oh i am going to pay my respects to **** " or " perfect place to ask saint ***** something ", offering a jar of holy water from Lourdes when someone in your family buys a house, to protect the house from the eye and from any ill in general..... (If anyone has book recs, podcasts abt folk practices of france and spain that would be deeply apreciated) Hope you have a good day ! 😊 Bye 👋🏻

If you are doing a novena and they answer it in the early days of it, do you still finish the novena? Or is that their way of saying “ur good here’s what you wanted.”

So folk Catholicism is more like “localized” one, right? Like how Buddhism in Thailand has local animism and Hinduism mixed in.

personally my family is very into Catholicism but less strict in the adherence to rules of the church but also not super open about their religiousness. i have pulled away from Catholicism and tried just witchcraft but have felt so empty and alone, so I think maybe Saint work or folk catholicism may be my next step. my great aunt was a nun so it probably was staring me in the face the whole time haha. but does anyone know or think starting with the saint I was confirmed under is a good a jumping off point for Saint veneration? i think this might be something i might do or look up saints for things I need help with? if anyone has any suggestions or thoughts let me know

*sigh* another "coincidence" that cultural Catholicism is something to check out... Even though I informally left the Church after my brief yet intense conversion and initiation into the Church because reasons

I'm Wiccan, but I've been circling back to folk Catholicism too. I'm interested in the mysteries of Jesus and Mary Magdalene as the sacred bride and groom.
