I've got TWO daughters discerning religious life. On one hand I'm overwhelmed with gratitude that my daughters are seeking to be the closest to Jesus they can be on this Earth. On the other hand there's a deep sadness of having to let them go, not knowing what this will mean for holidays and our relationship etc. Pray for me please! And them more importantly...🙏🙏🙏

Interesting how Mother Natalia mentioned not thinking she was called for being an extrovert. I ran from the idea of discerning religious life even though I felt drawn, in part because I thought I needed to be an extrovert

This was a great conversation!!!!!! Teaching your kids to pray is number one! People forget that a religious vocation is not a magical thing that just hits random people these are REAL PEOPLE that made a choice after God asked them to do something. It drove me bonkers when I was discerning that the general attitude was "we don't know what causes religious vocations but we will just pray for them and harass the nice young people who go to daily Mass" I had a women tell me two days after I got engaged to my husband that I was a "Carmelite in the making" and that maybe God had a different plan for my life as she sketchily passes me a large stack of divine mercy cards. I wanted to say "oh yeah, your random comment completely negates the seven years of blood sweat and tears I poured over this decision that I now understand and am at peace with... I totally never thought of becoming a nun, I'll break off the engagement tomorrow" 😑 It's not magic, it's not chance. It's the asking of God, discipline and faithfulness to prayer. Also if you don't have human virtues it makes it really hard to recognize or enter any vocation.... Cultivate human virtues in your kids so they are ready for everything. Ok I'll stop....😂

Please continue haha. No really, this was a great response & I've also noticed that attitude among many well-meaning laymen (usually old ladies that are at church often)

growing up in a catholic elementary school i had 2 nuns teaching and living in my tiny southern catholic school and church. i don’t know how because my parents had fallen away from the faith (they are therapists by profession, to matt’s point…lol) but were enchanted by one of the nuns teaching at my school. i thank God for these nuns for bringing spirituality and sternness (the perfect dispositional pair haha!) into my whole family’s life to the point that i always believed what i was taught there by then in my religion classes and sacraments, even if my parents in retrospect had lost the faith i didn’t even notice because of their reverence for these nuns and the respect both my parents accorded to them in a way totally different than their disposition even with the principle, ha! but i can still remember sitting in the pew and feeling so deeply touched with the idea of becoming a religious and to spend my life serving god in the fullest possible way… still discerning though after my own rediscovery of the church with so many synchronicities and moments of grace leading me back, still unmarried but not quite ready to make the leap, i’m scared the first monastery i visit i wont leave haha!) also my take on parents attitudes on religious vocations: the solution is have more kids! 3/4 of my grandparents came from such large rural peasant type families that at least 2 siblings became religious in all 3 families 😂

It's unnatural to take yourself or your child out of the genepool.

You share 0 DNA with any ancestors beyond 400 years ago, due to chance and gene splicing. You can't "live forever" via your genetics.

These two should be allowed to get married and still serve the faith while being married

I’d agree that serving God as a married person is a beautiful vocation. But these women have been called to and freely chosen a more radical way to serve that is just as beautiful. Paul’s 1st letter to the Corinthians chapter 7 (especially verses 32-35) talks about this same question, emphasizing that the unmarried have more freedom in their commitment to God.

They chose this life for themselves, they could have gotten married but chose this instead. Many women do in fact marry and serve the faith in the married life.
