Soaking up Tibetan Culture in Shangri-La 🇨🇳

Our last stop on our Yunnan adventure brings us to Shangri-La.
Shangri-La is a county-level city in northwestern Yunnan province, China, named after the mythical land depicted in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon. It is the capital and largest city of Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture.

The yogurt lady's English might not be perfect, but she can totally get her messages across while being expressive and natural. She does have a gift with languages, as you can tell from her impeccable Mandarin, spoken with almost no accent in the background. She's also quite relaxed and friendly in front of the camera. Kudos to her.

@@yisun2111 We actually met this same lady in Shangri-La last month, recommended by some Dutch friends in our hostel. Its quite a sad story, in fact many Tibetan exiles in India and Nepal make the very dangerous journey back to Tibet including our tour guide on our trip also. Despite knowing it will mean a spell in prison and more on their return.

Yunnan is a very diverse province. different city has different minorities: Lijiang - Naxi People, Dali - Bai People, Shangri-La Zang (Tibetan) people. therefore, each city has their unique archietecture, language and food.

@@Alan_and_ShannonNow, you may understand “Chinese” is “nationality”, and it’s not “ethnicity “😊. How Chinese looks like before in your perception is actually “Han Chinese”, besides Han Chinese there are 55 different ethnic groups of Chinese, including Uyghur, Tibetan, Russian etc.

You guys should not stop here! Should keep going about 150km to Deqin county, for the Kawakapo Snow Mountain(aka Meili Snow mountain), Deqin county also belongs to Shangri-la area. It is the final stop before entering Tibet Autonomous Region. The Mountain that No One has ever made it to the top. One of the Divine Mountain of Tibetan ppl. It’s breathtakingly beautiful. I been there in 2020, still could not forget how beautiful it was. Many beautiful Lodges and guesthouse there as well.

Based on my experience in Tibet, if you see a person standing in the middle of somewhere with a little goat like Stanley in any tourist site, most likely you will be charged around 15~20 Yuan if you want to take photos while cuddling those lovely creatures. Surprisingly it seemed like the lady did not charge you at all! I bet she knew you guys were not aware of the 'rule' there so why not just make it free and let you guys have fun! What she's trying to say....is the Yak is a very special and honoured animal. Giving Tibetans milk, yogurt, meat and taking nothing from them. They don't have to feed them or putting it short they give nothing to the Yak but take a lot from it.

Shannon's comment is very authentic, maybe not the best taste, but it provides enough energy for the day. This is exactly the Tibetan food is like, I totally agree with that. in the old times, Tibetans were poor and they need to do lots of labor work, so the food needs to have high energy.

There are 56 ethnic groups in China, including the Han ethnic group and the Tibetan ethnic group. You can't see Tibetan, Uyghur, or Zhuang communities anywhere outside of China in the world. We are proud of China's multi-ethnic peaceful integration. Many people may say that ethnic minorities are not like China because Western textbooks do not accurately and fully introduce China, leaving the impression that China is equivalent to the Han ethnic group.In fact, many elderly Tibetan people have MAO portraits hanging in their homes, Because it was New China that liberated them from the serfdom of the bloody oppressed religious leader slave owners, and because New China peacefully liberated Xizang, tens of millions of Tibetans will never be religious slaves, and they can freely believe in Tibetan Buddhism without becoming slaves to any religious name.

We just came back from shangari-la. It was raining (we were very unlucky) and so we didn't go to temple. We went to pudacuo national park. Very nice. But our highlight part was to meili snow mountain.

You need to go Yanji, Yanbian Autonomous Korean Prefecture. It's in the northeast. China is very diverse. Xinjiang alone is also very diverse. It has Uyghurs, but also Tajiks, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Uzbeks, Hui, Mongols, Manchu, Tatars, Russian, and Han.
