Soap making video for the Soap Challenge Club August 2020 - Layers with Drop Swirls: Beginner Entry Category as I still haven't reached my 50 batches of soap yet.
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
After last month's challenge, I really the colour palette of black, grey and white and I wanted to have thin layers on the bottom and have the same colours for the swirls on top. I think when comparing the two techniques, I prefer playing with the drop swirl technique more :) What about you?
I think this challenge was difficult how the two techniques require a good control of trace to show the design element and you can see in the end I didn't do that well with the layers. It would be a good tip to either stick blend the batter to at least a medium trace or use an accelerating essential oil/fragrance oil in between the layers or at least wait up a bit between the layers if you really want defined layers.
The colourants I used in this video were:
White - Titanium Dioxide
Black - Activated Charcoal
Grey - Activated Charcoal
Essential oil blend: Sweet orange, Bergamot, Litsea Cubeba, tea tree
Time links to the video:
0:18 Mixing of lye solution and oils
0:43 Adding essential oils
0:53 Splitting the batch into one third and splitted the two thirds into three equal portions
0:56 Colouring of the soap
1:20 Splitting the soap portions in half and pour into the soap mould
2:17 Splitting of the remaining soap into three equal portion and colouring of the soap
2:34 Drop swirls
3:10 Decorating the top of the soap
3:19 Cutting the soap
3:40 Finished photos
My favourite part of this soap is the colour palette :) haha I definitely need more practice with creating layer. Maybe purchasing a new mini blender will help too.
Thank you Amy for organising such a challenge again. For more information about the Soap Challenge Club: soapchallengec...
