Making bastile soap (70% olive oil) using breastmilk - this video will show you how to incorporate milk into soap. You can always substitute the water content with other types of liquids such as juice and coffee. The sugars and unique properties of the liquids will give your soaps a different feel and produces different kind of lather. Hope you enjoy the video!
Please always follow safety requirements while making soap! Sodium/Potassium hydroxide is caustic and can cause burns on skin or on mucous membranes!
Here is the recipe for this video:
70% Olive oil
25% Coconut oil
5% Shea butter
1:2 lye to water ratio (water content substituted with breastmilk)
Essential oil blend: Lavender, Rose geranium (hydrated in yellow clay to help retaining the scent)

Lovely soap! When I make milk soaps, I do the 50-50 method. 50% of distilled water, frozen and 50% milk, also frozen. My favourite milk for cold process soap is coconut milk.

Very enjoyable video ☺️ may I ask at what temperature you mix your oils with your lye. Do you allow your soap to go through the gel phase? I'm trying to understand if soaping at lower temperatures avoids soda ash.. would love your thoughts. Katherine
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Katherine, I don’t usually measure the temperature of my oils and lye solution simply because I’m lazy. I just let the oils sit until it’s no longer warm then I go ahead. But to my knowledge soaping at lower temperature can cause soda ash - best to have it at around 37 degrees Celsius and blend it to a thicker trace to avoid it. Hope this helps.

Do you let the milk and lye solution sit until it becomes the temperature you need? Will it scorch as it sits and warms up?
@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 2 жыл бұрын
I use it right away after it haha completely dissolved. Normally the iced milk and ice bath will prevent it warming up.

@@TheScraftworks goat s milk or camel milk both having same smooth feeling on skin and fresher look... AHA ie lactic acid s presence and few organic acids too in it... Whereas other vegan milk s having smooth finish but no fresh looking.. hence I vote camel milk and goat s milk... anhydrous powder works equally the same...

It really depends on how much oils and what oils you are using to calculate how much lye to use. Always have to run the calculations through lye calculator! I guess you can still use the milk as long as it’s not stale.😊

Yes sodium hydroxide is needed to make soap. You need to freeze the milk or the sodium hydroxide will burn the milk. The soap is good for about one year at leastz

The recipe in percentage has been included, it is best to put it through the lye calculator using those numbers to safely make soap because the measurements change according the the size of the mould and the purity of your lye.The soap needs cure for at least 4 weeks. thank you!

It’s better if you put the percentages into the soap calculator because different people use different size moulds and it affects how much of the oils you use! Accuracy is important in making soap which is different from making food recipes.

You can add both, honey about tablespoon and oats about 1-2 tablespoons. Just soap at a lower temp in case the honey will make it too hot.

@TheScraftworks I want to try this recipe this week. What type of coconut oil do you use? Can I use virgin coconut oil? Also, I read that coconut oil can be drying and my baby gets dry skin. Can I increase the shea butter amount and decrease the coconut a little, or will that mess with the texture/hardness of the soap too much? Based on some research I did, I was thinking 20% coconut and 10% shea. But I've never made soap before, so...

@TheScraftworks
@TheScraftworks 3 жыл бұрын
If you have never made soap before, you should check out some beginner recipes before making soap. You don't want to work with milk as it may be tricky at first. If you have 4 oz of milk, you can use about 250g of oil around half of the recipe shown BUT it is so important to run it through the soap calculator with all the measurements and measure accordingly!!! It is best to learn how to use the calculator before starting. Hope this helps!
