Soap Making - Vegan Soap.. is it really?
Time for another rambling session with me! Today, I'll be talking about vegan soap. Is it possible? How much animal interaction is too much? Does loss of habitat count? Let's discuss and see where this leads. I hope you enjoy the ramblings!

Too many choices in today's world. Vegan, all natural, Palm, no Palm etc. If you were poor, hungry and dirty, you would be happy with any food to eat, any clothing made from silk or wool, and any bar of soap. Just saying!

Yes Olive Orchards. Not a vegan. Had the discussion with vegans. Is taking a bees honey stealing. After all you built them a home and they are eating the pollen. I consider the Honey and wax as payment for room and board.

BUT .., we rob their antiviral antibacterial super-nutritious honey … which keeps them from being sick … and we swap it for soft icing sugar!! PLUS they clip the queens wings so she has to stay 😞 and hers soldiers stay too. So it’s not really room and board … it’s slavery and robbery !! 🐝

One thing I'd add is that when bees are used to pollinate monocrops like this, it's not just an existential matter of "oh they're doing labor for us." Bees who are used as pollinators for monocrops are getting significantly inadequate nutrition. They are not healthy hives, they are not kept in good conditions. I hate to be reductionist, but it's one problem I've always had with the type of vegans who will drink almond milk but refuse to eat honey. Bees are directly hurt much, MUCH more by the overfarming of almonds than the harvesting of honey. That's kind of a silly example, but the problem actually runs pretty deep. The proliferation of vegan and vegetarian diets has led to a lot of produce (or byproducts of produce) being made widely available in markets that perviously weren't exposed to it. That sounds great, right? More variety in your vegetables. Easier to eat healthy for vegans and non-vegans alike. But it's not. Because that means that more plants are monocropped, the climates that can produce these plants (often in the global south) are exploited for it, and THEN on TOP of all of that, you have to factor in the toll on the environment that shipping all of these plants around the world while they're still fresh takes. Similar issues with soap -- unfortunately, small batch soaps made with exotic oils are not helping the environment in any way. I'm not here to bash small soap creators -- frankly I think the issue is way too large for small batch soaps to have any significant impact on the environment, and nice handmade products are cool. It just bothers me when people pack tons of exotic oils into their soaps and pretend like it's somehow "good for the environment" just because it's vegan, or cruelty free, or "all natural" or what have you. Back to veganism -- I'm not saying any of that is necessarily "as bad" for the environment as the meat industry. I'm frankly not educated enough to make a statement like that. But I am saying that a truly sustainable diet will not come with convenience or global distribution. Whether you're eating meats or not, the most sustainable option is to buy directly from small farmers who are growing crops that actually work with your native climate, raising their livestock responsibly, etc etc. And frankly, that's just *not possible* for most people. Because the problem is not and has never been individual consumer choices. If you want to save the animals and the environment, you have to do so by fighting large, systemic issues, not by micromanaging your own personal dietary habits. Ok, sorry. I'll get off my soapbox now. I guess I'll close by saying that, while I disagree with the methods they're using, I do have respect for people who choose not to eat animals or animal byproducts for ethical reasons. (I haven't even addressed people who are doing it because they don't believe animals should be raised for slaughter, rather than for purely environmental reasons. That's an ethical belief therefore I really have nothing to argue it with. Like the LDS analogy you made -- I could argue for days on end that the structure of that church is exploitative and harmful, that I've seen it ruin people's lives, but at the end of the day I can't do anything to refute the actual religious beliefs held by the LDS.) I do think there's some value in choosing to reject the meat industry as a way to distance yourself from the harm it does to the planet, even if that benefit is mostly just for your own mental health. I just don't think it's the best strategy from an environmental perspective, I do think there are new problems introduced by it, and I do take issue with people who preach that veganism is the only way forward.

I think it was the history channel? Anyways they showed how they grow almonds and make the different products in California. Ship in bee colonies. They spray some chemical (fertilizer?) By airplane on all the trees and kill all the bees. 😳🤯. What?! It’s crazy. I’m all for a good steak from a local farmer. Honey. But to make almonds you have to hurt the bees. No thanks.

Speaking for myself as someone on a vegan diet & is moving towards more local vegan products in general, I don’t have a problem with animals such as bees being involved in pollinating plants etc as that’s something they may naturally do without us. It’s usually when they’re being forced to do something completely unnatural to them & the practises are unethical. A lot if not al of the things that vegan people are against ultimately come from mass global production and distribution thats eroded care and appreciation. I personally don’t think veganism would have been so big if we only ever relied on small local farmers and makers that genuinely have a love for what they do. The sad reality is that even being vegan doesn’t make a big difference globally unless the large corporations make drastic changes

Of course we all know animals harm other animals etc. There’s this natural ebb & flow everything on the earth has with eachother, everything works in a sort of harmony apart from us in most parts of the world. We’ve fallen so far out of it that it’s tipping the scales too far. Even to the point that if all humans disappeared tomorrow the destruction we’ve created would be around for thousands if not millions of years and still affect all animal life.

I think the simplest point customers who want a *vegan* soap are trying to make is that they don't want animal-based oils used in the soap. If you bring pollinators into the discussion, then *veganism* cannot truly exist and defeats the point. I think if you give your customers options for animal-free products or by-products, that's essentially what they're looking for. Properly state your ingredients and let them choose.😊

Nearly forced vegan here! I was bit by a Lone Star Tick which caused me to have Alpha-gal. I'm allergic to mammal products and byproducts, and you're absolutely right. It's a deep rabbit hole of information where people don't realize how much animal byproduct is in nearly everything. It's not impossible though to live vegan successfully as anyone with AG has too in fear of an allergic reaction. Non- vegan soap messes me up so I hope to learn how to make my own products one day.

Hey there Jon, I've just come across your video while looking up vegan soap recipes and thought I'd clear up a few misconceptions. Veganism isn't about being perfect, it's about doing the best you can within your circumstances. Unfortunately, I do not have the power to replace monocropping and migratory bee-keeping with permaculture farming and environmental restoration, which means that some insects and small animals may be harmed in the production of crops, fruit and veg. It's important to note that the majority of crops such as soy are used as animal feed for the 80 billion animals we kill annually to eat (imagine how much land we could return to nature and malnutrition we could solve if we directly fed that to the 8 billion humans instead). Deforestation and habitat destruction is being driven by animal agriculture. As is fresh water depletion, pollution, climate change, etc. So when we talk about harm, it isnt just to the animals. If vegans support these industries we're called hipocrits, but if we advocate for a better system we're accused of pushing our agenda. We vote with our dollar by boycotting where we can. We do our part to create positive change by advocating for it, sometimes protesting for it. You may find us speaking up annoying... protesting has always annoyed people but it's always been a necessary component in positive progress (worker's rights, women's rights, civil rights, queer rights, etc.). I encourage you to look into the benefits of veganism. Animal agriculture is destroying our health and our planet. It isn't a tag line or a bandwagon. It's about recognising faults in this world and seeking to fix them. It's being practical. We all sit around and complain about a lot of f*cked up shit; what's wrong with trying to do something about it? I don't want anyone to die for me and vegan food is tasty af - it's a win win. Check out some recipes on KZbin sometime; you might find something you like! A lot of the ingredients you mentioned simply aren't vegan and would never be used in vegan soap (lard, honey, palm oil) so I can skip those. A lot of vegan soap-makers will also source ethical scents/colouring or omit them completely. Skip. The main crux of your argument seems to be centred around plants being pollinated by bees however this isn't actually a problem. Bees are out in nature doing their thing. Using their autonomy to pollinate in order to provide for their families. Humans simply benefit from this system. Us benefiting from something doesn't make it bad. It becomes bad when we use them for our gain, and to their detriment. As long ad we replace the plants we take and do not imprison, forcibly work, injur or kill, it will be a symbiotic and sustainable system - something animal agriculture is not. I encourage you to consider the practical application of your suggestions and criticisms. Not using pollinated plants would mean the end of the human race. As far as I can see, there is literally no actionable outcome to your (respectful) criticism, so what is the point in bringing it up when there's literally nothing vegans could do about it? I'll admit, there are some annoying and misinformed vegans, but they do not represent vegans. Just like extremists do not represent religions. Misandrists do not represent feminists. There will always be extremists and I for one have met far more militant and ignorant meat eaters than vegans. If you look into any topics related to veganism, I hope you will seek out reputable sources (not the crap that trends on social media due to hate-sharing or shock factor). I am not an expert on all topics, but if you have any questions I'd be happy to try to answer them. P.s. dairy cows absolutely are hurt. Look up 'dairy is scary' for some examples but the cliffsnotes are: cows are forcibly impregnated in a very gross way, once their babies are born they're stolen (very emotionally upsetting for mamma), male calves are killed by blunt force trauma and discarded as waste or sold as veal after being kept immobile in a cage, female calves are often tied up in tiny hatches in all weather conditions until they're old enough to impregnate, mamma is milked too often which causes issues and results in blood and puss present in the milk you drink, mamma is impregnated over and over and over until she physically breaks down (how do you feel about this being done to a dog?), mamma is then sold for meat now she's useless (so, the same result as males but with years of abuse first). Cats and dogs are no different to cows and pigs in all the ways that matter.. so why do you draw your line there? Why does vegans advocating to end all animal abuse 'go too far'? Why is there an acceptable level of animal abuse? I'll end my comment with the same sentiment you used to end your video - live and let live.

I only ask,as I wanted to find out how many iterations of a recipe you would average to hit the sweet spot for scent etc ? People are not frustrated by vegans because they are pushing their ideology down their throats, but because they are pointing out that most people don't actually behave in line with their own beliefs. Most people don't want to cause suffering to animals for their pleasure, but they do it anyway. We live in a complicated world and its impossible to live without some kind of impact on other animals (i.e. death in crop production..). That doesn't mean using plant oils that may have been pollinated by human-managed pollinators is just as bad as using the fat off of a sentient animal like a pig. It's not about being perfect, its about reducing the harm we cause. You say there are moral line and that torturing kittens would make the cut for you, but where is that line? You don't have to use animal fats to make soaps or eat, but you do it because you enjoy it.. What if someone enjoys torturing kittens? Really, how do you draw that line?
@unclejonssoap
@unclejonssoap Жыл бұрын
You've confused do many things that I've said in this video. It would take a while separate video to go over each point. But the biggest take away here is that the line for me isn't anything to do with kittens...lol. I use some animal fats because I do eat meat. The fats are a byproduct of the meat industry. I also don't like waste. So, it makes sense for me to utilize those products and reduce waste whole making a quality product. We're also starting to raise our own protein/meat. No torture involved in any way. Maybe I'll try to do a video on this soon. By the way.. the average vegan definitely pushes their agenda and way of life on people while accusing them of things that are very exaggerated. That doesn't mean all of them .. just the loud ones online and at farmers markets.
@sebleblan
@sebleblan Жыл бұрын
@@unclejonssoap I would love to hear a clarification of what I confused. Fat is not a byproduct of animal agriculture. It is a product. In fact I personally know scientists who work on feed design that allows the control of protein to fat ratio in pigs (sometimes they want it high, sometimes low). Raising animals to kill them yourself still imposes unnecessary harm to sentient beings. These animals are forced into the world living in bodies that have been selected not by natural selection and environmental pressures, but by humans for the benefit of humans. Chickens would never lay so many eggs in a month if we hadn't selected them to do so. And they suffer very much from this. A variant of this is true of all agriculture animals. Vegans do push their agenda, I am not saying anything to the contrary. But that is the same with anyone who see a violent injustice and which it to end. all the best

Most vegans don't realize that God gave mankind permission to eat animals after the flood in Genesis 9:3. The window for veganism in the history of the world has passed. These folks would have been happier before the flood... well, at least until it started raining.

Have to share, my husband has a t-shirt that says Vegans - hates the thought of killing an animal; but doesn't mind if you die of boredom while they tell you about it....Sold by Sam the cooking guy youtube!

Plus, I really do not understand why strict vegans won't eat any bread products that are made with yeast. Yeast being an animal? Bacteria is, I guess, by definition, an animal. But then bacteria are what we're made of. Smh.

YES!!! The amount of people that push their "choices" on others is ridiculous. The way I figure it as long as you're not hurting others you do you. I'm new to soaping & live in a rural area, so I haven't come across any issues yet.

Even if you go vegan, you’re still going to have to use soap that has some animal byproducts

Thanks for the video! Personally I think being truly vegan is impossible especially if you follow the rabbit hole. Like even synthetics, even man made products are not made of thin air. That just means they took something from the environment, extracted it into an unrecognizable state. Infact you can't even eat a plant without soil, which incidentally is made of animal by products. I think the important thing is whether your things giving back to the planet when you take. In fact, as an example... plastic, plastic is just hydrolyzed fiber, like... plant fiber.... like PLA is made from sugar cane Vinyl is probably made from a plant or even crude oil is basically made from all the old plants and animals. Everything you touch had an animal or many of some sort involved. The problem is when you rely on man made things you actually end up hurting the planet and yourself more. I don't agree with the insanity that is animal exploitation and abuse, but every category of everything is abused and exploited but people only care about animals because they have eyes and a mouth. Not exactly a fair fight for the rest of the planet.

@@unclejonssoap are you going to make a video about it. Dude stick with soap and stop trying to blast people because you feel like some vegans don't want your products. You're not going to make everyone happy but you are going to isolate yourself with these kinds of videos. It's why you have too much drama on social media. I've watched a lot of your videos and you seem upset by the channels through which you sell.

@@unclejonssoap I was a vegan from ages 9 to 21. When I witnessed a murder I changed. I realized how short life can be and also how cheap life is. That was the year everything changed. The thing that changed me was dramatic it wasn't a 12 minute video about someone whining about toiletry products.

Went vegan for over a year until my hair fell out in handfuls and my fingernails were as thin as paper. I guess I didn’t know what I was doing. Still not a fan of meat but find it’s necessary for me. I judge no one for how they live or eat. God bless ALL❤️

I didn’t have those problems but I was very thin, barely 110lbs, not allowed to donate plasma (something I felt very strongly about). I started eating dairy, eggs, and fish again because my body was missing those nutrients. Now I’ve gained 10 pounds and have way more energy than I did before. Thinking back, it was definitely a form of restriction for me. I’m still mostly plant based (because I love animals), but I’ve realized that I need those nutrients to keep my body working.
